THE BATTLING ‘BOYS

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Chaney Cowboys football team is standing tall at 7-1 on the season and that is due mostly to a very strong senior class of athletes and leaders. One such leader is defensive back and wide receiver, Willie Key, who has been able to lead by example all season and help guide this team to success. Another senior leader on this Chaney Cowboys squad is linebacker and tight end, Bryce Wilson, took some time to sit down with Steve Leslie at Hackett’s Pub this week. Throughout the night, Wilson and Key were able to give a little insight as to what it is like being a football player on this Chaney Cowboys squad. They also talk about what their plans are after the season and into the future, a little bit about their family and friends outside of football, and a rapid-fire questionnaire where Steve gets to dive into what makes Bryce and Willie the players and people that they are!

COWBOYS ROPE IN THE TIGERS

HOWLAND, OH – The Chaney Cowboys have been one of the hottest teams in the Mahoning Valley in 2022, and they showed just why on Friday night as a strong performance led them to a 42-0 shutout victory over the Howland Tigers on the road.

It did not take the Cowboys very long to score as Jawann Harmon took the carry and bursted down the field for a 60-yard touchdown run on Chaney’s second play from scrimmage to make it a 7-0 game after one. They then fired it up in the second quarter with 21 points in the stanza, with Matt Jones getting a 1-yard touchdown off of a quarterback sneak, Harmon getting his second touchdown from 29 yards out, and Jones bursting down the middle for a 19-yard touchdown score. Jones went 5/8 for 45 yards and one passing touchdown while rushing for 31 yards on 9 attempts and two rushing touchdowns. Harmon led the team in rushing with three carries for 113 yards (37.7 average) and his two scores.

The second half would not be much different for Chaney, all thanks to a superb defense led by players like Clifton Scott and Anthony Helmick, which held Howland to just 66 yards of total offense, only giving up one of them in the last two quarters. They also only let up two first downs on the night. The offense continued its hot streak as it would finish with 415 total yards (358 rushing). They turned on the running clock in the third quarter with Jones making a third down completion for Dewayne Thompson for a 15-yard touchdown. Jawan Freeman then capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter with his 15-yard touchdown run. Freeman rushed for 104 yards on 13 carries (8.0 average) to go with that touchdown.

Despite the shutout defeat, there were some strong points for Howland. They had a huge opportunity to score when John Perry hooked up with Michael Goussios, who sprinted down the sideline and fell just short of the pylon, giving them their best scoring opportunity of the night (which ended in a 58-yard blocked field goal return by LeBron Donlow). The defense also held strong throughout the first three quarters, as they got two fourth down stops in the first and third periods, respectively, along with a fumble recovery. The Tigers’ Carter Mock would help lead that kind of charge, as he got huge tackles for loss on key third and fourth and short situations.

The Cowboys will improve to 7-1 on the year with the shutout victory. Despite Ursuline jumping over the Cowboys in the playoff standings and pushing them down to #4, Chaney officially clinched a playoff berth with the win. They have a huge test next week as they host Warren Harding at Rayen Stadium, a team they lost to 35-26 a year ago. The Cowboys are looking to finish the regular season strong as they are looking to host their first home playoff game since 2001.

The Tigers will drop to 2-6 with the defeat as their two-game winning streak has been snapped. They will have a tough foe ahead of them on the road next week as they travel to archrival Canfield, a team looking to move up in the playoff standings and stay ahead of Chaney. The Cards defeated the Tigers last year at Lombardo Field 42-14.

COWBOYS SHAKE OFF HARVEY

PAINESVILE OH- Chaney had no time to feel bad about suffering their first loss of the season last week. They had a tough road test ahead of them in Week 7 as they traveled to Painesville to take on the Harvey Red Raiders.  Chaney didn’t miss a beat though, they raced out in front and got a 33-14 win.

It was a tough first half for Chaney. They went in to the locker room with a deficit.  The fourth quarter is when the Cowboys separated themselves. A touchdown from Javann Freeman was followed up by a pick six from Jason Hewlett.  Chaney sophomore quarterback Matt Jones scored a pair of second half touchdowns as well. He ran one in from 20 yards out, and also was able to find Hewlett for a 19 yard score.
Chaney will stay on the road on Friday in Week 8 as they travel to Howland.

CHANEY COWBOYS FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 7) WITH SETH ANTRAM

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Coming off one of the most physical games of the season, head coach Seth Antram and the Chaney Cowboys are preparing for the home stretch of their season before the playoffs begin. Last week the Cowboys fell at home to the Ursuline Irish, 30-27, at Rayen Stadium. Even though Chaney lost, they remained ahead of Ursuline in the Region 9 projections on joeeitel.com, as Chaney comes in at #4, whereas, Ursuline is #5 in the most recent release. Up next for the ‘Boys (5-1), will be a tough road test as they will travel up to Painsville to take on the Harvey Red Raiders (4-2) on Friday night.

YSN’s own, Steve Leslie, was able to sit down with Coach Antram this week at Hackett’s Pub to discuss the hard fought week six game against Ursuline, what he and his staff took away from that game, how he has been able to keep the team focused after their first loss of the season, an outlook at Painsville Harvey, and so much more!

COWBOY NATION, LETS RIDE!

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Senior two way star, Mike Logan, is one of the many leaders on this Chaney Cowboys football team this season. Not only does he lead on the offensive end from his wideout position, he also controls the defense as a hard hitting defensive back who always has a knack for making a big play when the team needs him to.

Defensive and offensive specialist, Jaylen Brown has seen it all in his time at Chaney and nothing has seemed to phase him on the football field. Whether he is lurking in the secondary from his safety position or coming up with a huge catch on the other side of the football, he has always been dependable and ready to go whenever his number gets called.

Mike and Jaylen had the opportunity to sit down with Steve Leslie this week at Hackett’s Pub to discuss their senior year on the field so far, what it means to be a Chaney Cowboy to them, what their plans are for the rest of the season but also after graduation, a rapid-fire questionnaire where we are able to learn more about what makes Mike and Jaylen the young men they are, and much much more!

NILES WINS MIDWEEK SHOWDOWN

NILES OH- Both teams have had their share of adversity this season and only one was going to come on top.  The one who came on top in the end was the Lady Red Dragons who got their third sweep of the season against the Chaney Cowgirls, winning 25-11, 25-12 and 25-14.

One of the biggest hitters in Kayla Sprague for the Red Dragons left the game early with a leg injury, causing a few Lady Red Dragons to step up. Mia Keeley stepped up with a few blocks in the second set and Aliania Thigpen was dangerous on her hits and spikes throughout the game.

It looked like the Lady Cowgirls could have some momentum early in the third set going up 3-0, but Niles fought right back with Abbey Reed leading them.  Not only is this the Red Dragons third sweep, it’s not the first for new acting head coach and athletic director Marc Fritz who had a big celebration after the game giving brownies to his players in the big victory.

After the game, YSNs Ian O’Brien caught up with coach Fritz about the game and what to expect against Hubbard, as the Lady Dragons will host the Eagles Thursday 7pm.

URSULINE COMES OUT ON TOP OF GRIT CITY SHOWDOWN

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- In one of the most anticipated games of the weekend, Ursuline and Chaney met at Rayen Stadium with a lot on the line. For Chaney, they came in looking to preserve their undefeated record (5-0), as well as their No.4 ranking in Division III. For Ursuline, they were looking to continue their rush up towards the top of the DIII Region 9 polls, and looking to move into the Top 10 in the state polls.

The game definitely lived up to its hype. Ursuline jumped on the board first with a 19-yard touchdown run by standout Christian Lynch, which was followed by a successful two-point conversion on a direct snap to lineman Michael Branch to put the Irish up 8-0. Chaney answered just before the end of the first quarter as Jason Ami-Austin took it in from 21 yards out to cut the lead to 8-7. Lynch continued his stellar night on the next drive as he capped off a long-sustained drive with his second touchdown of the night to make it 14-7 Irish. After that was when we saw our first glimpse of what Cincinnati commit Jason Hewlett could bring to the ballgame. Hewlett returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to the house as Chaney quickly tied the game up at 14. Both defenses came up big throughout the second quarter, and both teams headed to their respective locker rooms all tied up.

Chaney started the second half off hot with an impressive drive, but an interception by Will Burney put an end to that and Ursuline was able to tack on three more points on a 16-yard field goal by James McGlone to make it 17-14 Irish with 8:03 remaining in the third quarter. Chaney was finally able to secure their first lead of the game just under four minutes later as Jawann Harmon punched it in from nine yards out, but Ursuline would block the extra point to keep the score at 20-14. Ursuline answered with yet another Christian Lynch touchdown run after he set the Irish up with a 50+ yard rush earlier in the drive to make it 23-20 Irish with under four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Another touchdown from Lynch, his fourth of the night, made it 30-20 Ursuline with 4:22 remaining in the fourth quarter, making it seem like the Irish had delivered the knockout punch. Chaney though had other plans, as Bryson Douglas returned the ensuing kick 70 yards for a touchdown, Chaney’s second special teams’ touchdown of the night. That would be the last score though, as Ursuline’s offense was able to run off the final four minutes, and the Irish came out victorious 30-27.

PLAYER OF THE GAME:

Christian Lynch had another monster night for the Irish, totaling 37 carries for 244 yards and four touchdowns. Lynch eclipsed 1,000 yards on the season during his great night.
