CHANEY HOLDS ON IN OVERTIME TO SECURE DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

BOARDMAN, Ohio –

Matching up for the third time in the past four years, the fifth since 2001 with a district title on the line, the Chaney Cowboys (18-8) and Poland Bulldogs (17-9) faced off at Boardman High School for the Division II Canton Region Youngstown District crown.

D’Juan Waller scored twenty points for the game, Isiah Williams scored seven in the final period and Youngstown Chaney defeated Poland 67-58 in overtime Saturday afternoon. Chaney’s win came despite a twenty-nine-point effort from Ross Dedo of Poland. The senior went 11-19 from the field, shooting 65% from inside the arc.

Poland trailed by double digits at the half, and by as many as sixteen in the game. The Bulldogs scrapped and clawed their way back, highlighted by a 14-4 fourth quarter effort to send things into overtime. Unfortunately for the Dogs, the toll of not just the comeback itself, but the postseason as a whole proved to be too much in the extra period.Of Poland’s four postseason matchups, three needed more than the traditional four quarters to decide a winner.

COWBOYS BULLY THEIR WAY TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP

BOARDMAN, Ohio –

Rolling through their opening round matchups against Field and East, the Chaney Cowboys (17-8) came into the night looking for their fourth straight district final bid. Their opponent, Chagrin Falls Tigers (12-11), were fighting for their first final appearance since 2015 when they won the Ashtabula District crown.

The Tigers jumped all over the Cowboys, scoring the first five points of the night, and forcing Chaney turnovers on their first three possessions to start the ballgame. Nicholas Vinci would provide two makes from beyond the arc and another two from inside to pace Chagrin’s fourteen-point first quarter effort.

After struggling through the first quarter of action, the Chaney Cowboys finally showed up to play in the second quarter with a strong seventeen-points to take the lead just a few minutes into the second and end the half ahead by double digits.

Chagrin came out of the halftime locker room poised to make a run and did so to start the half thanks to Henry Nowell’s back-to-back buckets to open the third. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Chaney would respond with a 9-0 run, and wouldn’t let up there.

The second half was filled with Showtime Cowboy action, seeing Josiah Gonzalez finish two alley-oops, Clive Wilson throw down two rim shaking dunks, and DaVinci McDowell punch one in with the right, all contributing to a Chaney victory, 60-47.

CHANEY:

Clive Wilson 16 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks

DJ Waller – 15 points, 2 rebounds

Jason Hewlett6 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals

CHAGRIN FALLS:

James Kosmides – 13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks

Nicholas Vinci13 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists

Chaney Securing their fourth straight district final appearance, the Cowboys will vie for the district crown with a familiar opponent, the Poland Bulldogs (17-8). The Chaney – Poland matchup has now accounted for three of the last four district title games. The Bulldogs and Cowboys have already faced off once this season, resulting in a 57-46 victory in favor of Chaney.

Chagrin Falls Taking a step forward from an opening round exit in last season’s tournament, the Chagrin Falls Tigers have a lot to look forward to next season, as they will return the likes of James Kosmides, Nicholas Vinci, and Max Crandall.

CHANEY MAKES IT A CLEAN SWEEP OF EAST

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Since the return of Chaney (16-8) basketball, the Cowboys have dominated their crosstown rival East Golden Bears (1-18), winning the last eleven matchups. In those games, Chaney has outscored East 788 516, with an average margin of victory of 25 points.

Rolling through East 72-24 and 67-38 in the regular season, Chaney came out with a purpose in round three of Chaney vs East, exploding for twenty-seven first quarter points. D’Juan Waller and Clive Wilson led the way through the first, each scoring seven.

Despite an early double-digit deficit, the Golden Bears would not go away without a fight. East scored ten second quarter points, six of which came from beyond the arc, thanks to three balls from both Sean Hall and Bryce McDowell.Unfortunately for East, they had no answer for Chaney on the defensive side. Chaney put up another twenty plus points in the second quarter of play and bullied the Bears on the glass.

Before the night was over, every Chaney Cowboy that graced the floor (12), would score at least one point, leading Chaney to a victory, 74-29.

DJ Waller – 13 points, 5 rebounds

Josiah Gonzalez – 8 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists

CHANEY RIDES INTO NEXT ROUND

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Looking to three-peat as district champs, the #1 seed Chaney Cowboys (15-8) played host to the #25 seeded Mogadore Field Falcons (5-18). Since sports were brought back to Chaney, the Cowboys have amassed two district crowns, and one district runner up (coming in the inaugural season).

Boasting one of the toughest schedules in Northeast Ohio, Chaney struggled little with the visiting Falcons once they got through the first quarter of action. Led by a perfect 4/4 effort by Xander Rorrer in the first, Field was able to find some early success against the Cowboys, trailing by just seven at the end of one.

Unfortunately for the Falcons, that success was unsustainable, as a relentless Chaney defense forced turnovers in abundance, and a dominate display by Clive Wilson on the offensive boards led to sixteen first half points by the towering senior.

Ahead at the break by twenty-six, the Chaney starters expanded the Cowboy lead out to thirty-nine by the end of the third, then watched theendless amounts of depth coming off the Chaney bench dominate the fourth quarter as well, winning the final stanza thirteen to seven, and capturing their first playoff victory of the 2022 campaign, 79-32.

CHANEY:

Clive Wilson 18 points, 12 rebounds, 1 block

DJ Waller – 14 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist

Josiah Gonzalez – 13 points, 4 assists, 1 rebound

FIELD:

Brayden Cadwell – 14 points, 2 rebounds

Xander Rorrer 8 points, 8 rebounds

Chaney With their routing of the visiting Falcons, the Cowboys have set themselves up for round 3 against the Youngstown East Golden Bears (1-17). Chaney is undefeated against East since the reopening of the school.

Field Falling in the opening round for the 5thyear in a row, the Field Falcons end the season with a record of 5-18 and extended their playoff drought to now 20 years.

COWBOYS HAVE ENOUGH TO GET PAST POLAND

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Coming into the night, the Poland Bulldogs (14-7)held a 8-1 series lead over the Chaney Cowboys (14-7) since 2006, with the Cowboys first victory coming over the Bulldogs in last year’s district final. While Chaney controlled from the start of last season’s matchup, Poland came into the night looking to make things closer this time around.

Both teams got off to a good start from beyond the arc in the first quarter, sinking a combined five shots from deep, shooting 56% from three. While this matchup saw hot starts from long range, the same success did not carry over to the charity stripe, going 1-4 from the line.

A hard fought first quarter saw Chaney hold a four-point lead heading into the second, that would later by expanded all the way to nine with under three minutes to play in the half. Looking to close the gap before break, Poland star’s Colosimoand Dedo combined for the last seven points of the half, bringing the Dawgs within a score.

While Poland brought the intensity to end our first half of play, the Bulldogs were not able to carry it over to start the third. Chaney jumped on Poland to expand their lead out to nine once again, thanks to a 7-0 run courtesy of freshman, Matthew Jones.

The Bulldogs would end the third trailing by five but would be outscored fourteen to eight in the final period. Clive Wilson led the way for Chaney in the fourth with six, giving the Cowboys their second straight victory over Poland, 57-46.

CHANEY:

Clive Wilson 13 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks

Josiah Gonzalez11 points, 3 assists

Matt Jones 8 points, 4 rebounds

POLAND:

Ross Dedo20 points, 5 rebounds,

Christian Colosimo13 points, 3 rebounds

Chaney Now winners of their third straight, the Chaney Cowboys will travel West to take on the Vikings of North Canton Hoover (15-5). Hoover is a perennial powerhouse in the boys’ basketballscene and will provide a tough road test for the Showtime Cowboys, tomorrow, the 16th.

Poland Dropping back-to-back games for the first time since mid-December, the Bulldogs will return home with a chance of revenge against thehated Canfield Cardinals (9-11). The Battle of 224 will return Friday night at 7:00 pm.

MOONEY COMES UP BIG AGAINST COWBOYS

YOUNGSTOWN OH- No better way to start out the New Years than a Steel Valley Conference matchup between two of the top teams as the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals and coach Carey Palermo, who came into the game with a record of six and three, hosted coach  Marlon McGaughy and the Chaney Cowboys who were looking to get back to their winning ways after ending 2021 with a 70-55 loss against Medina

The first quarter was a defensive matchup with turnovers and steals paving the way.  Chaney would lead at the end of one six to three thanks to four points by Matthew Jones wearing his away number 25 Jersey and two free throws by Clive Wilson and Josiah Gonzalez.  Mooney got a free throw by Drew Pecchia and ended the quarter with a buzzer three by Jack Pepperney.

That three gave Cardinal Mooney the momentum the rest of the game as Mick Hergenrother had a huge second half along with Rocco Turner.  DaVinci McDowell and Wilson for Chaney got some momentum in the third and fourth with Wilson a force in the paint and a better second half at the free throw line and McDowell hitting a three.  However, Chaney got into foul trouble which caused Hergenrother to head back to the line and only miss one free throw.  Because of that, tje Cardinals ended up pulling away in the end winning by the final score 50 to 38, winning four in a row.  Mooney ended 2021 with a 47-13 win against Canton Central Catholic and started the new year with a conference win.

CHANEY BATTLES STATE CHAMPS TO THE END

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Looking to gain momentum from their revenge victory over Boardman last Saturday, the Chaney Cowboys played host to yet another top tier team, the Akron Saint Vincent Saint Mary Fighting Irish (2-2).

Sloppy play and turnovers ruled a first quarter that saw seven different players record a bucket. After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, the Cowboys would trade blows with the Irish before a strong finish to the quarter by Cleveland State commit, Ramar Pryor, would put Saint V’s ahead 12-7 at the end of one.

To start the second, the Irish would pick up right where they left off, forcing Chaney turnovers, and converting in transition. Coach Joyce’s troops were effectively taking the crowd out of effect, until Chaney big man, Clive Wilson, would slam home a rim rattling dunk to bring the Cowboycrowd alive. Transition buckets by Cam Sly and Josiah Gonzalez helped Chaney take their first lead since just a few minutes into the game.

With just under two minutes to play in the half, Saint V’s star and Illinois commit, Sincere Harris, would collide with a Chaney Cowboy chasing after a loose ball. Held rather quiet prior to the collision, a little bit of contact was all Harris needed to get going. The soon to be Fighting Illini would score the last four points of the half to put the Irish back in front heading into the break.

Harris would continue his dominance throughout the rest of the night, shooting eight of thirteenthroughout the second half to finish the night with a whopping 34 points. Only to be outdone by his teammate in Harris, Ramar Pryor also put up an impressive performance. Pryor’s three for three efforts from long range in the fourth helped put the Cowboys away. Pryor would end the night with 25 points.

The combo of Harris and Pryor proved to be too much for Chaney, as the duo would outscore the Cowboys themselves, fifty-nine to fifty-three. The rest of the Irish would chip in fifteen of their own to pick up the victory 74-53.

CHANEY:

Cam Sly 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks

Josiah Gonzalez – 11 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal

D’Juan Waller – 10 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block

COWBOYS END UP ON TOP IN ANOTHER THRILLER

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

THE LEAD UP

On the heels of a gut wrenching one point defeat at the hands of the Boardman Spartans, Coach McGaughy and his Chaney Cowboys (3-1) played host to the Warren G Harding Raiders (1-2).

Jumping out to an early 21-10 lead at the end of the first, the Raiders were giving Chaney flashbacks to last Friday night. Boardman’s recipe for success against the Cowboys was the ability to run their offense at the pace they wanted to play paired with the ability to limit turnovers. Since the Chaney basketball program was reborn in 2018, the Cowboys have boasted a brand of high-octaneoffense fueled by their smothering turnover driven defense.

Settling into their offense in the half court theCowboys were able to cut the Harding lead to single digits and would eventually tie the game before heading into the break. The Cowboys never held the lead in the first half.

Opening the third on a 10-3 run highlighted by Tyriq Ivory’s 6 early second half points, the Raiders were back out in front, but signs of exhaustion began to appear.

By the time the final stanza came around, the Cowboys trailed by 7, but Coach McGaughy’s depth on the bench was able to keep his young men fresh. Throughout the first 3 quarters,Harding’s senior leaders, Dom Foster and Tyriq Ivory, had hardly spent a minute combined off the floor.

The dynamic duo of Foster and Ivory combined for 23 first half points but only saw 15 go down in the second half of play. The Cowboys fast-pacedtempo had seemingly caught up to the Raiders, allowing Chaney to outscore their opponent by 8 in the fourth.

THE SHOT

Trailing by 5 with less than 15 seconds to go andthe score at 71-65, Harding’s Ivory pushed the ball up the court and banked a three pointer in to make it a one possession game.

Without any timeouts remaining, the Raiders were unable to stop the clock with less than 9 seconds to go but after the Chaney inbound pass would be stolen away by Duncan Moy, the Raiders were going to have a chance to tie. Moy backed the ball out beyond the arc before passing it off to Patien Stevenson. Stevenson would pump fake, side dribble, then bank home a shot to seemingly tie the game as time expired.

The Harding crowd erupted as this already incredible matchup was heading to overtime. The only problem? The officials caught Stevenson with his foot on the line, ruling his shot a two, and leaving the Raiders short by a single point, giving Chaney their third win of the season 71-70.

THE NUMBERS

CHANEY:

D’Juan Waller 19 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals

Isiah Williams – 11 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals

FALCONS HAVE NO PROBLEMS IN CHANEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The Austintown Fitch Lady Falcons, coming off of two hard fought games against both Salem and Poland, were looking to get back on track Saturday afternoon.

On the docket this time? The west-side rivals in The Chaney Cowgirls, who came into the game with a 2-2 record on the year.

Chaney brings more height this year compared to last, as Makayla Beckett, at 6’5”, looks to be a paint presence for the foreseeable future.

On the other side, Fitch brought the scoring, putting up 70 points of offense on the day. A large part due to the amount of turnovers The Lady Falcons were able to create.

The difference maker in this one? Kara Pirone, with 18 points of offense on a very efficient shooting clip, was the games leading scorer for Austintown.

Her shot from the mid-range was money, despite having the much taller Beckett on her from The Cowgirls. However, Pirone showed no fear, taking it to the hole and scoring from the blocks just as effectively.

From the opening tip, to the final buzzer, Fitch took the lead and never looked back. Coming away with the victory and going to 2-2 on the year.

Coming off the win, The Lady Falcons will hit the road to take on Beachwood on Monday, December 6th.

Chaney will look to get back on the horse with a matchup at East Cleveland Shaw Wednesday, December 8th.

As both schools have exchanged victories in multiple sports this season, this edition of the rivalry went to The Falcons.

BOARDMAN WINS THRILLER IN YOUNGSTOWN

YOUNGSTOWN OH-

Rolling into their home opener on a two-gamewinning streak the Chaney Cowboys (2-1) played host to the rival Boardman Spartans (1-0) in what was their first game of the season.

With fans at full capacity back in the stands for a regular season matchup for the first time since before the pandemic, the crowd for both sides were in full effect. At times, it felt as if this game was being played on Glenwood. After an 8-point run to end the first half, highlighted by back-to-back threes from Seth Cervello, the Boardman crowd erupted as their Spartans exited the halftime locker room.

Boardman kept the momentum in their corner as the third quarter began, limiting their turnovers early and continuing to dictate the tempo. By the end of the third, the Spartans held the lead, 38-30.

The Chaney Cowboys had fought all night long, continuing to play their brand of smothering defense and high tempo offense, but each time the Cowboys would score, the Spartans would stay composed and respond.

Midway through the fourth, and the Spartans had seemingly put the game on ice, expanding their lead to 16, the largest margin of the night. Failing to record a single three till this point in the ballgame, the Cowboys’ Josiah Gonzalez would knock one down from range to kickstart the Chaney offense. Senior guard, Isiah Williams, would score four points on the inside in the fourth battling through a lower half injury that forced him to sit out for the majority of the final three minutes.

Five different Cowboys would score in the fourth, and the Cowboys were able to cut the Spartans lead all the way down to one with less than 20 seconds to go thanks to a clutch D’Juan Waller three pointer. The Cowboys would foul, and the Spartans would miss both legs of the double bonus.

Moving the ball up the floor quickly, the Chaney ball handler would slip and lose his footing, turning the ball back over to the Spartans via a traveling violation. The Cowboys still saw themselves with a chance to win after the Spartans would miss both free throws again in the double bonus, but the Chaney three quarters court heave would hit off the side of the iron. Boardman would avenge their two-point loss at home last season, picking up the victory in hostile territory, 50-49.

Isiah Williams 15 points

Josiah Gonzalez – 11 points
