VIKINGS PUT RAIDERS SEASON IN HOT WATER

SALEM, OH- The South Range Boys were looking to get revenge on Waterloo after a first toughloss early on in the season. Waterloo had other ideas and defeated the Raiders, 64-46.

Waterloo started off quickly taking an 8-1 lead early in the first and progressively poured it on throughout the game. South Range could hardly get any momentum due to the struggle of missing shots and foul trouble. Kyle Shockley was a dominant presence for Waterloo on both sides of the ball causing havoc for the Raiders. South Range got the game to a 12 point differential at the end of the 3rd to try to spark a comeback in the 4th quarter, but were unfortunately unsuccessful.Kris Scandy led the Raiders with 12 points including a pair of 3’s. Eli Taylor added 9 points off 2 3’s for the Raiders. Also, Jake Gehring and Chris Brooks contributed 8 points a piece for South Range. For Waterloo, Shockley was the top scorer on the night with 31 points, 9 which came from 3 pointers. Also, Caleb Francis put up 20 points to help push the Vikings to a victory.

The Raiders finish their season at 16-9.

Congratulations to South Range on a great season and goodluck to all of the Raider seniors in the future! Stay tuned for tournament updates on YSN.

Chris Brooks led with 24 points. Dante Digaetano was also in double figures with 12. Kris Scandy added 11.

CAN’T MISS CHRIS

CANFIELD, OH- He’s a young man that’s grown up before our very eyes here at YSN.

When we first met Chris Brooks from South Range, he was a sophomore looking for confidence, experience, and an opportunity to prove himself.  Since that moment in the gym, the 6’4 Raider Senior has done all that and then some.  Brooks has locked himself in on the football field as a red zone threat over his past 3 years, won a State Title with the baseball team, and has his name in every conversation for the area’s top players on the hardwood.

What you didn’t know?

He’s as humble as they come.  Brooks is a team-first leader who is eyeing the possibility of continuing his playing career after high school but has yet to pinpoint where.

We caught up with Chris to discuss sports, school, and life on and off the playing surface on this week’s South Range Player Profile: Can’t Miss Chris.

STARTING STRONG RAIDERS TAKE DOWN CANFIELD

The South Range boys’ basketball team waited a long time to get back on the court in the offseason. The saying goes good things come to those who wait. The Raiders used a 16-8 third quarter to pull away from Canfield and win 65-47.

The game was a real back and forth affair up until that 16-8 third frame. With 14 seconds left in the first half, the Raiders led 31-28 and the Cardinals had the ball. They were poised with the opportunity to either cut the lead to one or tie the game before halftime. Kris Scandy had other plans though as he jumped into a passing lane got the steal, and got the deep three at the buzzer to put the Raiders up 34-28 at the break. It was all Raiders from that point on.

Chris Brooks was just a rebound away from a double-double with a 26 point 9 rebound effort. Dante DiGaetano was also in double figures with 14 points and 7 rebounds.

The Raiders return to the floor on Tuesday night as they host LaBrae.

CHRIS CROSS WILL MAKE YOU JUMP

CANFIELD, OH- Ask any football coach what he wants in a receiver, and here’s what you’ll find: Size, Speed, Smarts, Hands, Athleticism, Hunger, and Swagger.

What was just described was South Range Senior Wideout, Chris Brooks.

The Raider receiver came off a pretty efficient game against Crestview in Week 2, catching 4 passes with three of them resulting in touchdowns.  The multi-sport star makes no bones about it that he loves basketball, but there’s a family tradition in football with his older brother playing and Dad being on the staff, it’s a game that’s grown on him and he’s a name that’s racing up the recruitment charts with his performances as of late.  Especially on jump balls in the endzone!

This week we highlight the 6’4 standout on the outside in our South Range Player Profile: Chris Cross Will Make You Jump!

ONE FOR THE RECORD BROOKS

There’s a saying at South Range High School that players and coaches alike abide by.  They all play “South Range ________”  Whether it be football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, etc.  South Range athletes are born to play a certain way.  When you look at it from the outside, there’s a certain dynamic to it:  scrappy, fast, tough, all-out, relentless in all they do.  There’s an ego that is dismissed from the jump.

The “Raider-Way” is a way of thinking and acting, not of playing.

So, when you’re looking for the perfect personification of that ideal, you don’t have to look any further than South Range’s own, Chris Brooks.  The Raider Junior exemplifies the attitude that coaches love to have on their team.  A natural leader with a cool head on his shoulders, Brooks knows when to lead the team on the court, and when to take a different role.

This week Brooks won the Week 7 Baird Brothers Big Dog of the Valley with his strong showing against Salem.  Nearly unstoppable in that game, and truly hitting his stride midseason, Chris is our focus of the South Range Player Profile: ONE FOR THE RECORD BROOKS!
