FRANKEN CHOOSES ‘GUINS TO CONTINUE CAREER

COLUMBIANA, OH-  Columbiana Senior Chase Franken has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his baseball career at Youngstown State University. 

Franken is a three-year starter for Head Coach Ryan Wolf’s Clippers. Franken earned 2nd Team PBR and Honorable Mention All-Ohio honors last season as well as First Team Northeast District.  Additionally, Franken has been named 1st Team All-League his three years as a Clipper.  Franken has a career .455 batting average including 112 hits (second career behind Mitch Davidson’s 113) and school records with 24 doubles, 20 triples, and 47 extra-base hits. Franken also holds the career record in runs scored (102) and triples in a season (8).

On the mound, Franken has amassed 17 wins and 186 strikeouts.  Academically, Franken carries a 3.8 GPA and earned Academic All-Ohio Honors in 2019. Franken also has excelled on the football field as he currently holds three school records, was a three-time all-league selection and earned 2nd team Northeast Inland District honors this past season.

Franken also competes in the summer for the Astro Falcons under the tutelage of Don Pletcher.  Franken was a vital piece of the team that went to the Palomino World Series in 2019.

At YSU, Chase will be under the watchful eye of Dan Bertolini who continues to make it a point to keep local talent in The Valley while competing with some of college baseball’s best programs.

LADY CLIPPERS LIFTOFF AGAINST ROCKETS

COLUMBIANA, OH- There will be many eyes on the Red and White of Columbiana this year.  Last night, many of those sets of eyes left impressed as the Lady Clippers delivered a big win at home 68-34 over Lowellville.

The Clippers started off slow, but it didn’t take long into the second quarter once to catch their stride.  Kayla Muslovski led all scorers with 31 points, 5 steals, and 3 helpers.  Grace Witmer racked up the G. Burbick Farms player of the game for her efforts of 12 points, 2 blocks, 4 steals, 6 rebounds, and a pair of assists while Grace Hammond also scored a dozen with 8 rebounds to show as well.

Columbiana (1-1) will now turn their attention to Ursuline who they will take on in Youngstown on Thursday Night on YSN.

CLIPPERS BREEZE PAST LISBON

LISBON, OH-  The Clippers kept their playoff aspirations in the air on Friday night while handling EOAC business against Lisbon to the tune of 42-6.

Jakob Cross maintained his run on a stellar senior season when he began the game with a 46-yard rushing touchdown to put the Clips ahead for good.  Cross would end the night with 89 yards on the ground with two scores as well as 128 yards through the air and a touchdown strike there as well.  Xathon Cross was efficient with a catch for a score, while Joe Bable entered the painted grass twice on the ground with 3 rushes for 26 yards and 71 yards receiving.

For Lisbon, Tyler Welsch had 2 rushes for 56 yards including a 54-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth quarter.

Columbiana (6-3) who is currently seeded 7th in their region will turn their attention to winless East Palestine to finish the regular season while Lisbon (1-8) plays at United to wrap up their season.

COLUMBIANA FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 8) WITH BOB SPAITE

For the last time in 2019, Coach Bob Spaite and the Columbiana Clippers played at Firestone Park, as they hosted the Wellsville Tigers. To the joy of the Clipper faithful, the Clips won with an impressive 41-0 shutout. Up next for Columbiana will be a road test as they will travel down to Lisbon to take on the Blue Devils in EOAC play.

The Voice of Columbiana for YSN, Mark Franken, caught up with Coach Spaite to discuss the big win last week over Wellsville but also what we can expect from the Clippers as they will attempt to keep their playoff hopes alive.

CLIPPERS DOMINATE TIGERS

COLUMBINANA, OH- The Columbiana Clippers were clicking on all cylinders picking up their fourth straight victory with a 41-0 drubbing of the Wellsville Tigers. The Clippers scored early and often while stifling the Tigers throughout. Chase Franken rushed for two of the Clippers’ five touchdowns on the ground. Jakob Cross, Hunter Woodring, and Brady Dixon each found paydirt from 2 yards out. Xathon Cross capped the Clipper scoring with a 55-yard interception return before the half. Neither team was able to threaten the goal line in the second half.

Jakob cross passed for 205 yards in the first half connecting with Xathon four times for 72 yards while hitting Justin Rydarowicz twice for 67 yards. Coach Bob Spaite rested his offensive starters the entire second half. The Clippers(5-3) will travel to Lisbon next week. Wellsville (5-3) looks to regroup before hosting Southern Local. RAIDERS SAIL TO DISTRICT SEMIS

The South Range Volleyball program got their ticket to the district semifinals with a four set win over Columbiana on Saturday night. (21-25 25-21 25-14 25-20)

The Clippers were the team to start with more energy. Coming off a tournament win on Thursday the Clippers were ready to go. The Raiders in the other hand hadn’t played since Thursday October 10th. The Raiders also had to deal with getting used to the lower ceiling at Salem. The Raiders don’t have a ton of experience in that gym, getting bounced in their first tournament game last season. At least three balls got lost in the rafters for the Raiders in set one. Not to take anything away from the energetic Clipper offense who was putting pressure on the Raiders back row. The Clippers couldn’t have started any better with a 25-21 set one victory.

The Raiders took time to calm down before set two. However, Columbiana still had tons of momentum. They got out to a 9-5 lead and looked poised to keep making noise. The Raiders turned the tide and knotted the set up at 11. Their run didn’t end there as the Raiders continued to plug away and wound up with a 16-1 lead. It was all Raiders from this point on. They kept a late rally from the Clippers in check and took set two 25-21.

The Raiders stormed out of the gates in the next set. The big difference was their net defense. Whether it was Izzy Lamparty or Abby George, the Raider block started to wear down the Columbiana attack. The Raiders rolled through set three 25-14.

The Clippers showed great resiliency to fight back in set number four. The two teams traded points back and forth all the way up until the Raiders led 14-13. Then the Raiders rattled off a couple points in a row to create separation. Clippers still not going away, they tied it back up at 18-18. But the block of Lamparty struck again. The Raiders would get three points in a row two from the block and lead 22-19. They’d go on to win set four 25-20 and the match 3-1.

Izzy Lamparty led the way with 12 kills, 4 blocks, and an ace. The Primavera sisters were both in double figures. Anna finished with 11 kills, 5 digs, and 3 aces. Maria had 10 kills, and 3 digs. Emily Irons tallied a double double with 28 assists, and 10 digs. Reagan Irons had an impressive 31 digs.

The Raiders move on to play Lake Central Catholic on Wednesday at 7:30. That match will be at Salem High School.

Columbiana finishes the season with a record of 11-13.

COLUMBIANA FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 7) WITH BOB SPAITE

Coach Bob Spaite and the Clippers played host to the Brookfield Warriors last week and the show did not disappoint. The Clips came from behind to win 24-23 and improve to 4-3 on the season. Up next for Columbiana will be another home game as they will welcome the Wellsville Tigers to Firestone Park.

Mark Franken, The Voice of Columbiana for YSN, sat down with Coach Spaite to talk Clippers football, what we can expect this Friday night agains the Tigers, and also what the Clips need to do in the final three games of the 2019 football season to keep their playoff dreams alive.

SALEM, OH- Columbiana showed that they’re looking to make waves in the postseason as they defeated Campbell Memorial on Tuesday night 25-21, 25-13, 25-6 in straight sets.

Grace Witmer and Maddie Witherow filled the stat sheets against the Red Devils as Witmer had 8 kills, 6 assists, 16 points, 4 aces, and 7 digs while Witherow had 15 tallies, 5 aces, and 4 kills.  Other Clipper contributors would include Maci Linhart with 16 digs and 4 kills, Marissa Makosky with 8 points and 7 assists, and Tori Long with 9 digs, 7 points with a pair of kills and aces on top.

Columbiana will now gear up to play in the Sectional Final against South Range on Saturday night at Salem High School.

 

CLIPPERS SURVIVE WARRIOR RALLY, FRANKEN MAKES HISTORY

COLUMBIANA, OH- Columbiana raced out to a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter before Brookfield took control and closed to within one point, only to come up short here at Firestone Park as the Clippers came away with a 24-23 victory. Clipper kicker Colin Schick opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal in the first quarter. Then, senior signal-caller Jakob Cross continued his dual-threat assault scoring on a 70-yard run and firing a strike to Hunter Zentner from 20 yards out to give the Clippers a 17-point cushion in this key non-league matchup. But Brookfield would turn the tide before the half and trailed 17-7 going to the locker room.

Brookfield would hit several big plays in the second half turning short passes into long gains while quarterback Haden Gibson knifed his way through the defense on the ground. However, after cutting the lead to 17-15 in the fourth quarter with momentum clearly on their side, the
Warriors elected to do something most teams have avoided in 2019. They gave dangerous Clipper return man Joey Bable a chance to make a play, and he did just that taking the ensuing kickoff 90-yards for a touchdown to push it back to a two-score lead. Crowned homecoming
king at halftime, Bable rescued the Clippers with his scintillating run down the sideline. After cutting the lead down to one, the Warriors were on the move again late in the fourth quarter. But with less than three minutes remaining Chase Franken’s interception on the Clipper
fifteen staved off a potential go-ahead score. Coach Bob Spaite then rolled the dice calling a deep pass out of a power formation for a crucial first down.

Down to one timeout, Coach Randy Clark instructed his Brookfield defense to allow a Clipper touchdown which would give the Warriors a chance to get the ball back and potentially tie it at the end of regulation. He did not count on the savvy senior Franken sensing the situation and giving himself up inside the Warrior ten, which allowed the Clippers to take a knee and survive.

Columbiana (4-3) hosts Wellsville in a key Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference game next week. Both teams will need a victory in that one to keep their playoff hopes alive. Join us on YSNLive.com for the action.

CROSS YOUR T’S

COLUMBIANA, OH- There’s a name that’s been vastly under the radar this year for his team’s accomplishments, and that name is Jakob Cross.  Cross has been getting things done with his cannon arm and his dynamic legs.  Defenses are in a frenzy just trying to keep 5 contained, but having to give up double teams to his receivers means Cross will pick you apart with the rocket launcher on his shoulder.

While this week, Cross is nominated for Baird Brothers Big Dog of the Valley, he’s never been one to let outside distractions enter his gameday mentality.
