DON’T BET AGAINST DOUBLE DUECES

Lowellville, OH — As the clock ticks down on his senior year, Geno Perry, star running back for the Lowellville Rockets, reflects on a whirlwind football season. Perry, who transferred to Lowellville from Mohawk during his sophomore year, has become a fan favorite, showcasing his talents on both sides of the ball while leading his team to numerous victories. “It’s gone pretty fast,” Perry remarked. “It feels like it was just preseason, and now we’re already at week nine. It’s been an amazing journey.”

Perry’s football journey began in third grade, inspired by his father, a standout player in his own right. “My dad was really good in football, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” Perry shared. This father-son legacy has driven Geno to excel, both on the field and off. Playing alongside key teammates such as AJ Belko and impressive underclassmen like Ricky, Perry has helped shape a dynamic and evolving Lowellville team. “Playing behind guys like AJ this year has been incredible,” Perry noted. “And Ricky, he’s been filling in as QB pretty well. It’s great to see younger players stepping up.”

The rivalry games, particularly against Springfield, are where Perry truly shines. “Springfield games are always more competitive. You gotta beat the best to be the best,” he said. While football remains his passion, Perry is also an accomplished baseball player, serving as center fielder for the Lowellville Rockets’ baseball team. He credits baseball with helping him maintain his composure on the football field. However, his heart remains with football, which he plans to pursue in college. “My favorite moment has been winning the MVAC both years,” Perry reflected. “Especially this year, showing people how good I really am.”

Off the field, Perry’s support system includes influential coaches and family members. He highlights Coach Manuel, referred to as a “father on the field,” and Coach Greer, his running back coach, for their significant roles in his athletic development. His parents, especially his father in sports and his mother in academics, continue to be his pillars of strength. Looking ahead, Perry plans to attend college, majoring in pre-law, motivated by his mother’s belief in his potential. “My mom always thought I’d be good at it, and it’s something I’m willing to pursue,” he said.

As he prepares for the next chapter, Perry’s ambition and dedication remain unwavering. “I’m focusing on running back in college,” Perry asserted. “But you never know. College can change things, and they might move you around. Still, running back is where my heart is.” With over 1500 yards rushing this season, Geno Perry’s legacy at Lowellville is firmly cemented. His journey serves as an inspiration to many, and his future promises to be as bright as his high school career has been illustrious.

FEW WORDS, MUCH SUCCESS

LISBON, OH- Following a standout performance against Valley Christian, Lisbon High School’s junior running back Ashton Hinchliffe is gaining recognition as one of the school’s top football talents. Hinchliffe, who balances his role on both offense and defense, showcased an impressive ability to navigate the field and seek out contact, a quality he attributes to his innate love for the game.

In a recent episode of “YSN,” hosted by DJ Yokley, Hinchliffe discussed the team’s challenging start to the season, exacerbated by a bout of illness that affected the entire roster for nearly four weeks. Despite this setback, Hinchliffe and his teammates demonstrated resilience in their healthy return to form.

“We were struggling with it for a long time… that was our first week we weren’t sick,” said Hinchliffe, reflecting on their breakthrough performance.

The discussion also veered into lighter topics, such as his food preferences and aspirations beyond high school. Hinchliffe revealed a penchant for Italian cuisine, preferring angel hair spaghetti with sweet sauce and a roll on the side, but admitted his ideal meal would include a medium-well steak and a sweet potato.

When it comes to future plans, Hinchliffe has his sights set on playing college football but remains undecided on a specific school. With a solid academic record and a favorite subject in English—mainly because it spares him from dealing with numbers—he appears well-rounded both on and off the field.

His support system, especially his family, plays a crucial role in his success. “It means everything… they push me every day,” he shared, emphasizing their importance in his life.

As for his professional aspirations, Hinchliffe is considering a career in physical therapy, driven by a desire to help fellow athletes recover and stay motivated. “Just helping athletes out… keeping them motivated to keep going,” he explained.

The conversation concluded with a peek into Hinchliffe’s travel interests; Aruba tops his list of favorite destinations after having visited the sunny locale once before.

With such determination, both on and off the field, Ashton Hinchliffe is certainly a name to watch in Ohio high school football. His journey is a testament to hard work, resilience, and the unwavering support of loved ones.

VICTORY AND VALOR

YOUNGSTOWN, OH-Valley Christian High School’s football season has taken a turn for the better this year, with the team boasting an impressive 4-1 record thanks to the remarkable leadership and dedication of senior player Alfred Coward. Fresh off a commanding win against East Palestine, Coward opens up about what sets this team apart and his unyielding drive to succeed.

Coward, who has been a key player for Valley Christian throughout his high school career, speaks highly of his teammates’ passion and conviction. “You can be the biggest, the strongest, the fastest, but if you don’t have that will, it doesn’t matter,” Coward emphasizes, pointing out that sheer physical capability isn’t enough without the heart to back it up.

Last season’s end was a bitter pill to swallow for Coward and his teammates, as they concluded with a 4-6 record, falling short of playoff inclusion. “It was very bitter,” Coward admits. “The whole summer, the whole offseason, I was just waiting to come back with a different type of ferociousness.”

Coward’s offseason was marked by relentless dedication. From walking five miles to the gym to working out every day, he left no stone unturned in his preparation. “It was a grind, for sure,” he says. “But it didn’t feel like a grind because I knew it was going to help me get to my goal.”

That goal is to play college football, an ambition that drives Coward daily. “You can’t simulate that energy in the stadium,” he says of the college game atmosphere. “It’s a passion, and that passion is never going to fade.”

When asked to pitch himself to any college coach in America, Coward’s response reflects his determination: “The conviction I have, the grit I would bring to the field, it will never waver.”

One striking moment in the season was during a game against Leetonia, where Coward’s late-game interception nearly turned into a touchdown. “I read the quarterback, saw the ball coming, and thought, ‘That’s me,'” he recounts. Despite being tackled at the 1-yard line, his subsequent transition to quarterback to score the touchdown is a testament to his versatility and resolve.

Coward’s inspiration comes from his late grandfather, Alfred Coward, whom he proudly carries as his namesake. “He was a man of conviction, and once he put his mind to something, he went all the way.”

Among his teammates, Jackson Bragg stands out as someone who pushes Coward to be better. Their friendly rivalry on the field is a driving force. “He’s going to let you know if you miss a tackle,” Coward laughs. “I gotta win. I gotta beat him.”

With his heart ablaze and eyes set on future goals, Alfred Coward continues to lead Valley Christian with the same ferociousness and dedication he has shown throughout his football journey.

Burrage’s journey with Valley Christian football began thanks to Coach Hake, whose inspiring motivational speeches fueled Burrage’s passion for the game. “Coach Hake just motivates me and makes me really want to play,” he shared.

POLAND, OH- At Bulldogs Bar and Grill, the familiar buzz of chatter and clinking glasses gave way to the latest episode of the Poland Bulldog Show. Host Matt Romeo, exuding his usual charisma, welcomed this week’s guest, Vinny Tafaro. Vinny, a dedicated student athlete, was ready to share some insights into his busy life.

They began with the basics. As school resumed, Vinny admitted that math was his favored subject, a choice that immediately connected him with Matt’s own high school days. However, Matt wryly confessed that gym class had always been his real favorite.
The discussion soon veered into the challenges of balancing academics with athletics. Vinny spoke candidly about his daily routine—focusing on schoolwork from morning to afternoon, then shifting gears to football practice. His strategy of taking one task at a time, whether it was homework or hustling on the field, evoked respect.

As the conversation progressed, Matt didn’t miss a beat, bringing up their forthcoming away game against the Firelands Falcons. Vinny detailed the team’s consistent practice regimen, emphasizing that their preparation remained unchanged whether at home or on the road.

With the NFL season on the horizon, Matt couldn’t resist steering the talk towards football fandom. Vinny revealed his preference for college football, specifically Ohio State, but also had a soft spot for the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL. This led to an impromptu fantasy football query. Matt, eyeing his number one draft pick, solicited Vinny’s advice. Surprisingly, Vinny suggested drafting Austin’s Travis Henderson, a college player, showcasing his forward-thinking approach.

Curious about Vinny’s inspirations, Matt inquired about players he admired. Vinny’s eyes lit up as he mentioned Aaron Donald, the stellar defensive lineman from Pitt, whose hand techniques and athletic prowess he aspired to emulate. Matt, noticing Vinny’s linebacker-like build, found a parallel to Aaron’s own versatility.
Finally, they delved into Vinny’s workout regiment. Vinny outlined a rigorous routine, hitting the gym almost daily with a disciplined focus on constantly pushing his limits. His dedication to improvement left an indelible impression on Matt.
