TIGERS TROUNCE CLIPPERS

New Middletown, OH- The Columbiana Clippers came into their matchup with Springfield brimming with confidence and intent on avenging two straight blowout losses to the Tigers. It was made clear very early that that was not going to happen. After forcing a three and out on
the Clippers first possession, the Tigers quickly found the end zone on a Beau Brungard to Garrett Walker 21-yard strike. Dominating the line of scrimmage, the Tigers methodically pulled away for a 35-0 victory.

The Clippers struggled to stop the Tiger running game led by Austin Tindell. Tindell was the workhorse though the rushing touchdowns came from Brungard, David Duvall, and Chris Shoemaker. Brungard also returned an interception for a touchdown right before the half
leaving little doubt about the outcome going into the break.

Any offense the Clippers could muster was thwarted by turnovers as the Clippers could not sustain a drive, never crossing the Springfield 30 yard line.

Springfield (3-0) travels to Lowellville next week while Columbiana (1-2) hosts Southern Local to kickoff the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference schedule. You can catch the Clippers and Indians on YSNLive.com

CLIPPERS PUT THE CLAMPS ON BLUE DEVILS

COLUMBIANA, OH- Columbiana’s relentless defense forced three early turnovers and capitalized smartly to take control and cruise to a 41-14 victory over visiting McDonald here Friday night. Led by senior end, Cody Miller, the Clipper defensive front tortured the Blue Devil offense, which set up short fields for Coach Spaite’s charges.

Jakob Cross converted the first turnover by hitting Xathon Cross over the middle for a 7-yard touchdown pass. Then he found Joey Bable up the seam for a 32-yard strike making it 15-0 in the first quarter. Cross continued to put the ball into the end zone all night long for a total of six touchdowns. He found Chase Franken for 31 yards before hitting Xathon again for 20 yards. A one-yard plunge and a 40-yard scamper rounded out his prolific night.

Plagued by the turnovers, McDonald could find no rhythm on offense but were able to perfectly execute a screen pass on 4th and ten as Dominic Schadl connected with Nathan Gilligan, and Coach Williams’ crew faced a 28-7 deficit at the half. Schadl scored late on a one-yard quarterback sneak.

It will be a huge test next Friday as the Springfield Tigers (2-0) will play host to the Clippers (1-1). YSN will be just a click away with all the action.

CLIPPERS FALL TO PANTHERS IN OPENER

NEW FRANKLIN, OH-The Columbiana Clippers faced a daunting task to open the 2019 high school football season, stopping the prolific Manchester Panthers ground game.  The Clipper defense was up to the challenge. Ethan Wright, who has rushed for over 5,000 yards and 65 touchdowns over the past two seasons, was held under 100 yards and scoreless, but the perennial Division V power found a way to pull out a 21-14 victory over the visiting Clippers anyway.  It was victory number 393 for the legendary head coach of Manchester, James France, in his 48th year at the helm.

Wright lined up as quarterback for much of the game and found fellow running back Hunter Foster for a 28-yard touchdown on the game’s opening drive.  The Clippers quickly responded behind Jakob Cross’s arm and legs as the senior signal-caller led them downfield before handing to Hunter Woodring for a 3-yard score to knot it up, 7-7.  Coach Spaite’s offense took the lead early in the second quarter when Cross hit Chase Franken for a 64-yard touchdown pass. But late in the first half, crucial mistakes by the Clippers led to a game-tying touchdown pass by the Panthers, and the teams went to intermission tied, 14-14.

Both teams played outstanding defense leading to a scoreless third quarter.  Then, midway through the fourth, Riley Soles took a Cross pass the other way for a game-deciding pick-six.  Ethan Wright snagged another interception on Columbiana’s next possession to seal the win.

Cross ended the night with 250 combined passing and rushing yards.  Franken had 5 receptions for 122 yards while Hunter Zentner grabbed six catches for 62 yards.  Foster had over 100 combined rushing and receiving yards for Manchester.

Columbiana will host McDonald at Firestone Park next Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:00 PM.  YSN will have coverage starting at 6:45.
