2024 ALL YSN FOOTBALL TEAM ANNOUNCED

COLUMBIANA, OH- Each year, YSN honors the student-athletes that we felt made the greatest impact on their teams throughout the football season.  This year was no different than others with each school rich with talent on both sides of the football, many deserved to have their names in lights.

We strived to provide a comprehensive list based on suggestions by fans, announcers, coaches, and an executive team at YSN.  The list takes into consideration the amount of wins during a season, and the team (in most cases) received that number of honorees.  If a team went undefeated in the regular season, they were granted an additional player of representation.

Players of the Year are based on statistics compiled, as well as character and leadership traits witnessed throughout the year.  While we understand there are champions in every community, our internal point system takes into account several factors, and then the winners are discussed and voted on by the YSN Executive Team.

Congratulations to all of the players listed in 2024, you’ve done a remarkable job of representing your community, your team, and your families.

DRAGONS OUTLAST SPARTANS FINAL CHARGE

Conneaut, OH- The Lakeside Dragons secured a 42-24 victory over the Conneaut Spartans in a thrilling high school football county game. Lakeside got on the board late in the first quarter when Nate Bartone punched in a 2-yard touchdown, but a missed extra point kept the score at 6-0.

In the second quarter, Devin Miller extended the lead with a 1-yard touchdown run, and Bartone followed up with a successful two-point conversion to give the Dragons a 14-0 edge. Conneaut responded as Colby Stiltner connected with Ryan Turner for a 20-yard touchdown, though the Spartans missed the two-point attempt, leaving the score 14-6 at halftime.

The Dragons exploded in the third quarter, with Jay Anthony Williams breaking free for a 40-yard touchdown run, followed by Sincere Turner adding a 20-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion after Turner’s run pushed the score to 28-6. The momentum continued when Omar Ambriz hit Turner with a 29-yard touchdown pass, stretching the lead to 35-6.

Conneaut fought back in the fourth quarter, beginning with a 1-yard touchdown run from Stiltner. Although the two-point conversion failed, the Spartans closed the gap to 35-12. Isaiah Boles added a 3-yard touchdown later in the quarter, but another missed two-point conversion kept them at 18 points. A recovered onside kick gave Conneaut new life, and Stiltner fired a 41-yard touchdown pass to Brady Vera, bringing the score to 35-24. However, Lakeside’s Devin Miller sealed the game with a 14-yard touchdown run in the closing seconds, and the Dragons tacked on the extra point to make it 42-24.

Lakeside (3-6) will look to build on their momentum in Week 10 as they host the Edgewood Warriors (1-8) in the “Battle of the Bridge.” Conneaut (2-7) will aim to rebound when they face the Madison Blue Streaks (6-3) at home.

SPARTANS HOLD OFF WARRIORS IN CLOSE GAME

Story by: Larry Jennings

East Ashtabula, OH- Corlew Stadium buzzed with energy on Friday night as the Edgewood Warriors hosted the Conneaut Spartans in a crucial Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division clash on Homecoming. A packed house of fans watched an exhilarating game that saw momentum swings, big plays, and a comeback that came up just short for the home team. Despite a spirited effort by Edgewood, the Spartans emerged with a hard-fought 29-27 victory.

After a slow start by the Warriors on their opening drive, Conneaut wasted no time striking first. Ryan Stiltner capped off a steady drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. A series of penalties — an offsides and a facemask — moved the Spartans closer on the ensuing extra point attempt, and Isaiah Boles punched in a two-point conversion to put Conneaut up 8-0.
The Warriors responded swiftly. Quarterback JJ Dufour launched a 46-yard touchdown pass to Devon Sanchez, electrifying the home crowd. However, Edgewood’s attempt at a two-point conversion came up short, leaving the Spartans with an 8-6 lead.
Conneaut’s next possession appeared promising, but Riley Baldwin came up with a critical interception in the end zone, keeping Edgewood within striking distance. However, the Warriors couldn’t capitalize on the turnover, and after a short punt, Conneaut regained control. With 8:10 left in the second quarter, quarterback Colby Stiltner connected with Ryan Turner on a 4-yard touchdown pass. Thaddaeus Huya’s extra point extended the Spartans’ lead to 15-6.
Edgewood showed resilience as they found success in their running game behind Jaiven Pope’s tough off-tackle runs. Dufour then connected with Brayden Hall on a 9-yard touchdown pass, followed by Dufour’s two-point conversion run to cut the deficit to 15-14 just before halftime. Dufour continued his strong play on defense, intercepting Stiltner’s pass late in the half to prevent another Conneaut score.
The Spartans started the third quarter with a bang. On the first play from scrimmage, Boles broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run, sending the Conneaut sideline into a frenzy and pushing the lead to 22-14 after the extra point.
The Spartans kept the pressure on. Stiltner found Turner again for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 9:13 left in the game. Huya’s kick made it 29-14, putting Conneaut comfortably ahead by 15 points.
But Edgewood wasn’t done yet. Facing a critical 4th-and-15, Dufour fired a 68-yard touchdown strike to Sanchez, his second of the night, closing the gap to 29-20. Then, with just under eight minutes left, the Warriors successfully recovered an onside kick, igniting hope for a dramatic comeback. Dufour delivered again, this time connecting with Sanchez for an 11-yard touchdown — their third scoring link of the game. Kachersky’s extra point made it a two-point game, 29-27.
Edgewood attempted another onside kick, but Conneaut covered the ball and looked to run out the clock. The Warriors had one last chance from their own 20-yard line with 29 seconds remaining, but the Spartans’ defense held strong, sealing a thrilling 29-27 victory.
Conneaut, now riding high, will look to continue their momentum when they host Lakeside next week. Edgewood, meanwhile, will try to bounce back in their upcoming matchup against the Jefferson Falcons

FALCONS TAKE FLIGHT AGAINST SPARTANS

Conneaut, OH- The Jefferson Falcons delivered a commanding 50-0 win over the Conneaut Spartans on Friday, using a balanced offensive attack and a stifling defense to control the game from start to finish.

Jefferson’s first score came late in the opening quarter. With 1:45 left, Matthew Webster capped off a methodical drive by powering into the end zone on a 7-yard run. The Falcons missed the extra point but still claimed an early 6-0 lead.

In the second quarter, the Falcons quickly widened the gap. At the 7:22 mark, quarterback Dylan Burlingham launched a perfectly placed 25-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Kaige Boczar, who beat his coverage for the score. Though the two-point conversion attempt failed, Jefferson went ahead 12-0. Just seconds later, Conneaut fumbled the kickoff, and Jefferson’s Joel Navarro pounced on the loose ball, giving the Falcons excellent field position at the Spartans’ 39-yard line. Jefferson didn’t waste the opportunity, as Webster scored his second touchdown of the night on a 4-yard run with 4:16 remaining in the half. The Falcons successfully converted the two-point attempt, extending their lead to 20-0. Conneaut struggled to find answers, and Jefferson kept the pressure on. With 2:30 left in the half, Webster broke free again, this time on a 17-yard touchdown run, followed by another successful two-point conversion, pushing the Falcons to a 28-0 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw more of the same, as Jefferson came out strong. Michael Riffle powered his way through for a 3-yard touchdown run at 8:16. The Falcons kept their foot on the gas, with Burlingham and Boczar connecting for their second touchdown of the game just over a minute later on a 35-yard bomb that made the score 42-0.

Even with the game well in hand, Jefferson continued to execute in the fourth quarter. Burlingham threw his third touchdown pass of the night, a 25-yard strike to Devin Salinas at 7:46, followed by a successful two-point conversion, bringing the final score to 50-0.

The Falcons’ defense was relentless, forcing multiple turnovers and holding the Spartans to minimal offensive progress. Conneaut was unable to generate any rhythm, as Jefferson controlled both the pace and possession for most of the game.

With this victory, Jefferson improves to 2-4 and will look to build on their momentum when they host the Lakeside Dragons (1-5) next week. Meanwhile, Conneaut, now 1-5, will face a tough road matchup against the 5-1 Geneva Eagles in Week 7.

ORANGE ISNT GOING ANYWHERE

CONNEAUT OH- Orange’s incredible turnaround season kept rolling on Friday, as they improved to 4-0 with a dominant 30-7 road win over Conneaut.

Russell Tye was a beast once again, racking up 120 yards on 14 carries and finding the end zone three times, all in the fourth quarter.

Both teams found the end zone on their opening drives, but after that, it turned into a defensive battle. The score remained locked at 7-7 after three quarters, with neither side able to break through. But Tye took over in the fourth, punching in three touchdowns to put the game out of reach and seal the win for Orange.

Now sitting at 4-0, Orange will look to keep their perfect season alive in Week 5 when they host Jefferson.

Orwell, OH-  Thursday night football in Orwell, Ohio did not disappoint as the Grand Valley Mustangs
played host to the Conneaut Spartans. The Mustangs and John Foss-Peters wasted no time
getting busy in the first quarter as he scored on a 5 yard carry to go up 7-0 early in the first
quarter. The Spartans would answer back 5 minutes later as running back Isaiah Boles found
paydirt on a 16 yard carry and the Spartans were able to run the ball in on a 2 point attempt to
take the lead 8-7. Later in the quarter Freshman linebacker, Chris Seper, returned an
interception for a touchdown to give Grand Valley the lead back with 2:48 left in the first quarter.
The Spartans offensive drive stalled out to begin the second quarter and the Mustangs
handed the ball off to Foss-Peters again on a 4 yard carry for a touchdown to put Grand Valley
up 20-8, they would miss the PAT. Throughout the quarter both teams battled back and forth but
never gave in as the score going into halftime remained 20-8 in favor of the Mustangs.
Coming out of the break, Spartans quarterback Colby Stiltner found the endzone on a
keeper to cut into the deficit, 20-15 Grand valley still led. Both teams continued to battle back
and forth for the remainder of the 3rd quarter, and the Mustangs held a lead going into the 4th
quarter.
The Spartans showed great toughness and determination to power back from a once 20-
8 deficit, as tight end Ryan Turner caught a 13 yard reception for a touchdown giving the
Conneaut Spartans the lead, 23-20 with 8 minutes remaining in the ball game. In a seeming
change of momentum, Grand Valley had recovered a muffed fair catch, dropped from the
Spartans return man. The Mustangs would later capitalize that same drive as senior running
back Andrew Soltis would not be denied in the red zone on a 2 yard carry to give the Mustangs
a lead with 4:16 remaining, 26-23. The remainder of the game both teams fought back and forth
but during the final drive with help from Colby Stiltner, Isaiah Boles, Brady Vera and Ryan
Turner the Spartans found themselves in great position to win the football game. After an
incomplete pass inside the red zone to stop the clock it left the Spartans offense one last
chance to score. With 1.7 seconds left, the Spartans offense was facing a 4th and goal from the
6 yard line as quarterback Colby Stiltner called his own number and broke a few tackles on his
way to the endzone to give the Spartans the edge as time expired.
The Conneaut Spartans advance to 1-0 on the year as they will travel to Independence to take
on the Blue Devils, as for the Grand Valley Mustangs, they look to bounce back in week two
action against the Edgewood Warriors back at home.

2024 YSN ASHTABULA FOOTBALL PREVIEW

Ashtabula, OH- As autumn approaches, seven Ashtabula County football teams are gearing up for what promises to be an exhilarating season. Fans can catch all the action streamed live on www.ysnlive.com, featuring St. John, Conneaut, Edgewood, Lakeside, Jefferson, Pymatuning Valley, and Grand Valley. The 2024 season is set to bring significant changes to the county’s high school football landscape as teams rebuild following the graduation of key players from the class of 2023.

Edgewood Warriors: The Edgewood Warriors face a substantial rebuild this season, needing to fill numerous starting positions vacated by graduating seniors. The team will deeply feel the loss of Ashtabula County’s all-time passing leader Tony Hall, deep threat receiver Jacob Ernst, and standout linebackers Seth Enos and Zeke Lucas. The departure of offensive linemen Nick Wyman and Nick Barger also leaves big shoes to fill.

However, the Warriors retain some key talent, most notably the electric Zach Carlton-Hull. Carlton-Hull’s versatility as both a wide receiver and running back, coupled with his lightning-fast speed and ability to separate from defenders, will make him a cornerstone of the Warriors’ offense. Riley Baldwin returns as a deep threat receiver, known for his athletic jumping ability and long wingspan that allows him to “headtap” defensive backs. Promising talents JJ Dufour, Josiah Pope and Ben Schwartfigure join the receiving corps, with Dufour bringing varsity experience and Schwartfigure offering above-average catching and route-running skills and Pope with unparalleled athleticism.

In the backfield, Michael Ochoa, Denver Kessler, and Jaiven Pope will compete for carries, looking to establish a strong ground game. The offensive line will be anchored by Christian Braat and Alex Malasky, along with returning standouts Brock Fultz and Mason Thorr.

Perhaps the biggest challenge for Edgewood will be replacing Tony Hall at quarterback. Junior Nate Stewart steps into this crucial role after two seasons learning behind Hall. Stewart brings a strong arm and good field vision to the position, with the ability to run when needed.

The Warriors finished 6-5 in 2023, losing to Niles McKinley in the first round of the OHSAA playoffs. They open the 2024 season with a tough road game against Garrettsville Garfield, who finished 12-1 last year with over 4,500 rushing yards. Key matchups include home games against Conneaut in week 8, Jefferson for the Hoadly Cup Trophy in week 9, and the season finale against Lakeside for the Battle of the Bridge.

Jefferson Falcons: The Jefferson Falcons enter 2024 with a fresh approach after a challenging 0-10 season in 2023, which saw them face Division 4’s 6th toughest schedule. With a revamped schedule, the Falcons have replaced tough opponents Beaver Local, Perry, and Lutheran West with Painesville Harvey, Orange, and Pymatuning Valley. Despite having few seniors, the team boasts many returning lettermen, as last year’s starters were primarily freshmen and sophomores.

The Falcons’ receiving corps looks particularly promising, led by senior Kaige Boczar, a three-year letterwinner known for his speed, strength, and ability to break tackles. Joel Navarro and Devin Salinas bring sure hands and athletic route-running ability, while the imposing 6’4″ Terry Brown, with his nearly 7’0″ wingspan, promises to be an end zone threat on every play.

Junior Matthew Webster will lead the backfield, bringing a punishing running style that was on full display at the 2024 Ashtabula County Football Combine, where he won the trophy for most bench press reps with 29 at 185 pounds. Webster will also be a key player on defense as a linebacker.

Junior QB Dylan Burlingham, considered one of the county’s top quarterbacks, will direct the offense with his dual-threat capabilities. Burlingham’s impressive arm and running ability should keep defenses off-balance throughout games.

The offensive line, while young, is eager to establish themselves and protect their quarterback. Key games for Jefferson include the season opener at home against former NE8 Conference rival Girard Indians, a week 3 home game against the talented Pymatuning Valley Lakers, and the week 9 road game against Edgewood for the Hoadley Cup Trophy.

Conneaut Spartans: The Conneaut Spartans aim to build on their 5-5 record from 2023, which ended with a playoff loss to Garrettsville Garfield. The offense will have a new look following the graduation of Max Gleason and Wyatt Payne, who combined for over 2,500 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns last season.

Colby Stiltner takes over as the full-time starting quarterback, bringing a strong passing game to complement his running ability. This shift could signal a more balanced offensive approach for the Spartans in 2024. Senior Thad Huya leads a talented receiving corps, offering an impressive catch radius and relentless motor that often finds him open. Ryan Turner’s transition from offensive line to tight end adds an interesting dynamic, as his size and strength make him a dual threat in both blocking and receiving.

The Spartans return an experienced offensive line, anchored by 6’7″ senior Dylan Phillip a one man wrecking crew, who has been a starter since his sophomore year. Four-year starter Jaydon Anderson, along with experienced players Gavin Nesbit and Chetti Arcaro, round out a formidable front five. The rushing attack will be led by junior Carrick Dobran, whose agility and field vision should make him a threat in the open field.

Conneaut opens the season at Grand Valley, christening the Mustangs’ new turf field. Other key matchups include a week 8 road game against rival Edgewood and a week 9 home game against CVC Lake Division opponent Lakeside.

Saint John Heralds: The Saint John Heralds look to improve on their 3-9 record from 2023, with an impressive 17 of 21 starters returning with varsity experience. Senior QB Vin Narducci, who threw for nearly 1,800 yards last season (second in Ashtabula County), returns to lead the offense. Narducci’s dual-threat ability, having led the team in rushing as well, makes him a constant concern for opposing defenses.

Senior Ryan Williams will be the primary running back, offering both power as a bruising runner and versatility with his receiving skills out of the backfield. The Heralds boast a deep receiving corps, led by senior Will Anderson, who amassed 999 receiving yards in 2023. His speed and fantastic hands make him a difficult cover for any defense. Junior Anthony Severino adds a deep-threat dimension to the passing game with his speed and great release off the line.

The offensive and defensive lines, featuring seniors Grayson Petros, Ethan Hastings, and Manny Cooper, all with three years of varsity experience, promise to be a strength for the team. Juniors Milo Twinning, Anthony Petrochello, and Frankie Dubsky have put in significant time in the weight room and are poised to make an impact.

On defense, seniors Sully Twinning and Joe Piccirillo will lead the charge. The Heralds also have promising underclassmen in Carlo Fasano, Chase Newsome, and Gus Petros, who are set to be significant contributors on both sides of the ball.

Saint John opens their season on the road against the Trinity Trojans. Key home games include week 4 against Steubenville Catholic Central and week 6 versus Pymatuning Valley.

Pymatuning Valley Lakers: The Pymatuning Valley Lakers aim to build on their successful 8-4 season in 2023, which ended in the second round of the OHSAA playoffs against Mogadore. With an astounding 20 of 21 starters returning, expectations are sky-high for 2024.

The Lakers’ dynamic backfield duo of QB Ryan Croston and RB Ty Vickery returns after each rushed for over 1,500 yards and combined for 35 touchdowns last season. Croston’s unique skill set of speed, agility, and elite vision makes him a constant threat to run, while his impressive arm keeps defenses honest. Vickery complements Croston perfectly, rarely going down on first contact and possessing a nose for the end zone.

The passing game features talented and speedy receivers like Jaren Nowakowski, Jayce Fulkman, and Sean Croston. The offensive line, anchored by senior Jon Finello, has proven itself against some of the best defenses in Division 6.

On defense, defensive backs Jayce Fulkman and Alex Simon look to build on their multiple-interception seasons from 2023, providing a shutdown secondary that will challenge opposing quarterbacks.

The Lakers have won their conference (NAC) for the past five seasons and have made the OHSAA playoffs for four consecutive years. They aim to continue both streaks in 2024. Key games include a week 1 rematch at Mineral Ridge, seeking revenge for a last-second loss in 2023, a week 3 trip to Jefferson, and a week 5 home game against Girard.

Grand Valley Mustangs: The Grand Valley Mustangs enter 2024 with renewed optimism, joining the NAC conference after leaving the CVC and debuting a new turf field at home. Looking to improve on their 2-8 record from 2023, the Mustangs return senior QB Sammy Goforth for his second year as starter. Goforth’s athletic ability will be crucial in the Mustangs’ run-heavy offense.

The receiving corps features senior Shawn Hall, juniors Mason Kocab, Lane Gallagher, and Noah Waldo, with senior tight end Mark Hall adding size and blocking ability to the passing game. Seniors Andrew Soltis and John Foss-Peters provide a potent one-two punch in the backfield. Soltis brings a hard-nosed, downhill running style, while Foss-Peters offers agility and deceptive speed.

A major advantage for Grand Valley is the return of all five starting offensive linemen from 2023, providing continuity and experience up front. This seasoned line will be crucial in opening holes for the running game and providing protection for Goforth.

The Mustangs open their season at home against Conneaut, showcasing their new turf field in what promises to be an exciting debut for both the facility and the team’s new conference affiliation.

Lakeside Dragons: The Lakeside Dragons enter 2024 with a new head coach in Terrence Henton, who brings his high-powered offensive scheme from Edgewood, where he served as offensive coordinator in 2023. Henton’s “equal opportunity offense” promises to reward playmakers who get open and make plays.

First-year starting QB Omar Ambriz will lead the offense, bringing speed to the running game while looking to develop the passing attack. The receiving corps features an intriguing mix of talent, including newcomer Zar Triplin, an athletic and rangy receiver with above-average leaping ability. Returning letterman Matt Wagner, Sincere Turner, and the precise route-runner Zion Thomas round out a promising group of pass-catchers.

The Dragons’ backfield boasts a trio of dynamic runners in juniors Devan Miller and Jay Anthony Williams, along with senior Nate Bartone. Miller, a returning starter, brings strength and breakaway speed. Williams is an elite-level tackle-breaker with shifty running and great vision. Bartone offers muscle as a bruising, bulldozer-type back who excels in short-yardage situations.

On defense, senior linebackers Nate Bartone and Tierre Anderson anchor the middle. Anderson is noted for his size, strength, incredible motor and nose for the ball, while Bartone’s strength helps clog running lanes.

The offensive and defensive lines represent the most inexperienced facet of the Dragons’ team, with a completely new group on both sides. Underclassmen will be called upon to step up and improve throughout the season.

Key games for Lakeside include a week 2 home matchup against Notre Dame Cathedral Latin, a week 7 trip to Jefferson, and the season finale at home against rival Edgewood in week 10, which has become one of Ashtabula’s most heated rivalries.

As the 2024 season approaches, Ashtabula County football promises excitement, intense rivalries, and great action across all seven teams. Fans can catch all these teams and more on YSNlive.com, the definitive home for high school football in the region.

RED DEVILS LEAVE SPARTANS BLUE

Conneaut, OH- Crestwood Red Devils secured an 11-1 victory over the Conneaut Spartans on Tuesday in an opening round game of the OHSAA playoff tournament. The Red Devils were red hot at the plate, highlighted by a commanding performance with six runs in the fifth inning.

The Red Devils wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Bella Hunter’s homer in the first inning drove in two runs, setting the tone for the game.

Their offensive onslaught continued in the fifth inning, where they scored six runs on four hits. Contributions from Mia Gullatta, Kaitlyn Huffman, Ashlyn Weaver, and Erin Hallis fueled Crestwood’s momentum.

Adding to their lead, Grace Harper’s home run in the sixth inning further solidified Crestwood’s dominance.

Hunter, the starting pitcher for Crestwood, delivered a stellar performance, allowing only one run over six innings while striking out 10 batters.

HERALDS REMAIN UNBEATEN IN COUNTY PLAY

Conneaut, OH- The St. John Heralds displayed their grit and determination on Saturday, emerging victorious in a hard-fought 13-8 battle against the Conneaut Spartans. Will Anderson led the charge for the Heralds, delivering a stellar performance at the plate with three hits in four at-bats.

The Heralds wasted no time in asserting their dominance, drawing first blood in the opening inning thanks to a pair of timely singles. Bryson Vennitti’s clutch hit drove in two runs, setting the tone for an offensive onslaught.

The Heralds continued to apply pressure in the second inning, with Brady Cole’s single and a costly Spartan error contributing to a two-run outburst. Anderson’s prowess at the plate shone through in the third inning, as his single added two more runs to the Heralds’ tally.

While the Spartans mounted a valiant comeback effort, scoring five runs in the seventh inning, the Heralds’ early lead proved too daunting to overcome. Lincoln Wade’s two-run single and Thaddeus Huya’s two-RBI knock provided a glimmer of hope for the Spartans, but the Heralds’ resilience ultimately carried the day.

Ryan Williams set the tone on the mound for the Heralds, striking out six batters and allowing just one unearned run over three impressive innings. Dylan Philip shouldered the burden for the Spartans, but the Heralds’ potent offense proved too much to contain.

The Heralds’ offensive onslaught was a true team effort, with Vennitti and Aaron Wychock contributing multiple hits apiece. AJ Henslee’s keen eye at the plate resulted in three walks, exemplifying the Heralds’ disciplined approach. The baserunning prowess of Cole and Wychock further compounded the Spartans’ woes, as the duo combined for multiple stolen bases in a display of aggressive baserunning.

Next up, the Heralds will look to carry their momentum into a clash against the Bristol Varsity Panthers on Monday, while the Spartans prepare for a road test against the Geneva Eagles.
