RUNNING WEDNESDAYS WITH RICK SYPERT (EP 4) FEATURING MACEY MCBRIDE

CONNEAUT OH – The latest episode of YSN’s “Running Wednesdays” spotlighted sophomore track standout Macey McBride, whose record-breaking performances and mature mindset have put her on the radar as one of Ohio’s rising track stars.

Hosted by Anthony Hartwig and Boardman’s Rick Sypert, the episode delved into McBride’s rapid ascent. Despite just being in her second year of high school, McBride has already shattered multiple school records for the Conneaut Spartans, specializing in the 200 and 400 meter races. She attributes her breakthrough to year-round training–including winter circuit workouts at Edinboro’s indoor facility and regular morning lift sessions. “It’s honestly been kind of shocking,” McBride confessed. “I wasn’t really expecting to get as far as I did.” Family features prominently in her journey: her father serves not only as her coach but also as a strong motivator, while her older brother—himself a successful high school and college runner—helps push her to new heights.

When asked about training, McBride shared her flexible approach: “I’m fine with doing whatever because I know it eventually is going to get me where I need to be.” She admits a fondness for ‘ladders’ and longer runs early in the season, but has shifted focus to sprints and explosive starts as competitions heat up. With postseason meets approaching, McBride keeps her sights set on daily improvement, emphasizing the importance of staying calm and not succumbing to pressure. “The more I think about it, the worse it is,” she said, recalling last year’s nerves at regionals and her goal now to reach the state prelims.

Support from teammates and a close-knit track program fuels her competitive drive. “Everyone on our team is so nice and they’re all supportive and they’re always there cheering everyone on,” McBride said. Off the track, McBride is a devoted art student, soccer player, and member of the school’s drill team, finding balance between athletics and her creative passions. As regionals draw near, all eyes will be on McBride—both as an athlete and a role model. Her advice to fellow runners? “As long as I do what I know I could do, then that’s the win for me.”

JEFFERSON JUST TOO GOOD

JEFFERSON OH- Logan Saksa couldn’t miss on Wednesday, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Jefferson to an 11-1 beatdown over Conneaut.

Saksa set the tone right away with a double in the first to drive in the game’s opening run, then doubled again in the third, singled in the fourth, and ripped another double in the sixth for good measure. The kid was locked in.

Conneaut tied things up briefly in the first, but Jefferson answered fast and never looked back. They tacked on three more in the second thanks to an error, a fielder’s choice, and a weird double-play sac that still brought in a run.

Things unraveled for Conneaut in the fourth when Jefferson dropped five more runs on four hits. Everyone got in on the action—RBI singles, a sac fly, and of course, another RBI from Saksa.

Joey Sands was sharp on the bump, going five strong with eight punchouts and just one run allowed. Logan Padgett came on in relief and tossed a clean sixth to wrap it up.

Jefferson racked up 13 hits total, with Michael Riffle and Tate Hudson each collecting multiple knocks. Defensively, they were dialed in too—turning three double plays to keep any Conneaut momentum in check. Jefferson will look to keep it rolling Thursday when they host Perry.

RED LETTER SENIOR NIGHT IN PERRY

PERRY OH-  Perry wasted no time making a statement on Tuesday, torching Conneaut 15-0 behind a big-time showing from Arianna Rogers.

Rogers was locked in, driving in four runs on a double and a three-run bomb to center in the third. She got things rolling early and then dropped the hammer to put it away.

The Pirates dropped a nine-spot in the first inning and never looked back. Morgan Winters walked in a run, Sydney Collins and Madelyn Rupert each knocked in runs with singles, Sophie Sivon cracked a two-run double, and Rogers added an RBI double of her own. Just about everyone in the order chipped in during the opening frame.

In the third, Perry added four more. Rogers crushed her homer to center, and Rosalyn Tharp followed it up with one of her own to keep the fireworks going.

Rupert dominated in the circle, tossing a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts over five innings. She worked fast, hit her spots, and never let Conneaut settle in.

At the dish, the Pirates stacked up 10 hits. Rogers and Elise Strahan each had two knocks, while the team drew seven walks to keep the pressure on. Winters and Infalvi each worked a pair of free passes. On defense, Perry was rock solid—no errors, no mistakes, all business. Tharp led the way with four clean chances.

Conneaut’s only hit came off the bat of Ashlyn Sherman, but the Spartans had no answer for Perry’s firepower. Perry now turns the page to Thursday’s matchup with Jefferson Area, riding plenty of momentum into the next one.

JEFFERSON UNLOADS ON CONNEAUT

JEFFERSON OH- Rylee DeMattia put together a monster day at the plate Wednesday, driving in five runs to help Jefferson cruise past Conneaut, 12-1.

It was a slow start, with Conneaut jumping out with a run in the top of the first, but once Jefferson found their rhythm, it was all Falcons the rest of the way.

DeMattia got things rolling with an RBI single in the fourth, then blew the game wide open in the fifth with a bases-clearing double that capped off a seven-run outburst. Jefferson stacked hits in that frame like dominoes—triples, singles, walks, and then boom—DeMattia dropped the hammer.

She wasn’t the only one swinging it. Jefferson racked up 10 hits on the day, with DeMattia, Alaina Barress, and Makenna Stanich each collecting two. Marillia Matuz added three walks and swiped a pair of bags to keep the pressure on.

In the circle, Olivia Lewis handled business. She went four innings, allowed just two hits and one run, and fanned five. Ada Sirrine came in to finish it off with a clean inning and two punchouts.

Jefferson played a clean game defensively—no errors—and stayed aggressive at the plate with seven walks. They’ll take that momentum into Thursday’s road game against North.

DRAGONS THOMAS KNOCKS IN WALK OFF RUN IN EXTRA INNINGS

ASHTABULA, OHIO — The Lakeside Dragons pulled off a dramatic 6-5 walk-off victory over the Conneaut Spartans in a CVC conference matchup Monday evening. The game, played at Lakeside’s home field, saw the Dragons rally in the bottom of the eighth inning when Zion Thomas delivered a clutch single to score the winning run.

Lakeside’s offense was paced by Gage Tome, who had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with singles in the fourth, sixth, and eighth innings. Tome also helped spark the Dragons’ comeback with a key RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at five.

Conneaut jumped ahead early in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of Lakeside errors along with an RBI single from Ghiz to put up four runs in the inning.

Starting pitchers for both teams turned in strong performances. Tome got the start for Lakeside, tossing seven innings while allowing five unearned runs on five hits, striking out 10, and walking two. Ghiz started for Conneaut, working 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned) while also striking out 10 and walking six.

Tristan Westerfield earned the win for Lakeside, pitching a clean eighth inning in relief, allowing just one hit with one strikeout and no walks. Spring took the tough-luck loss for Conneaut, giving up three hits and the winning (unearned) run in one-third of an inning.

Lakeside collected 11 hits on the night. Thomas, Jeremy Murphy, and Tome each drove in two runs to lead the offense. Matt Wagner also chipped in with two hits in four at-bats. The Dragons showed patience at the plate, drawing six walks, with Westerfield and Tome each earning two free passes. Tome also swiped two bases, and the Dragons turned a double play defensively.

Conneaut’s offense was led by Arcaro and Ghiz, who each drove in a run. Thompson, Arcaro, Spring, Ghiz, Huya, and Dean each tallied one hit for the Spartans, who also turned a double play of their own.

The two teams will meet again on Tuesday, this time with Conneaut hosting the rematch.

GRAND VALLEY GOES THE DISTANCE

ORWELL OH-  Grand Valley battled their way to a 10-7 win over Conneaut on Tuesday, using a big first inning and clutch hitting down the stretch to get it done.

Conneaut struck first, cashing in on a dropped third strike and a passed ball to take a 2-0 lead before Grand Valley even got a chance to swing the bats. But the Mustangs didn’t wait long to flip the script. They answered with a five-run bottom of the first, capped by a two-run double from Ady Kovacic that set the tone.

Conneaut clawed their way back in the fifth, tying things up at 5-5 with a single and a fielder’s choice that brought in two. But Grand Valley responded right away. Kylah Petterson delivered the go-ahead hit in the bottom of the inning—a two-run single that pushed the Mustangs back in front, 7-5. They kept the pressure on and padded the lead late.

Kovacic picked up the win in the circle, going five innings with nine strikeouts while giving up just two earned runs on six hits. Natilly Hostetler came in and locked it down for the save. Lexi Brown took the loss for Conneaut, giving up 10 runs—six of them earned—across six innings.

The Mustang bats were rolling with 14 hits in the game. Isabella Paulic led the charge from the eight spot, going 3-for-4 and driving in two. Kovacic and Petterson also knocked in a pair, and the top of the order stayed hot with multi-hit games from Jenna Poyer, Breanna Rowland, and Violet Morse.

Conneaut had some offense of their own, getting RBI from four different players. Ella Boroski and Grace Todaro each picked up multiple hits, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Grand Valley’s firepower.

Next up, the Mustangs stay home to face Bloomfield on Wednesday. Conneaut will regroup and get back at it at home against Perry.

SIRRINE MAKES THE JEFFERSON BATS SIZZLE

CONNEAUT OH- Jefferson unloaded on Conneaut Monday, rolling to a 19-3 win behind a huge day from Ada Sirrine and a red-hot lineup that couldn’t miss.

Sirrine did damage in both the second and third innings—she roped a two-run single, then came back with a two-run homer to center that helped blow the game wide open.

The Falcons came out swinging in the first. Marillia Matuz drew a bases-loaded walk to open the scoring, then Allison Hill launched a two-run shot to center, and Makenna Stanich drove in another with a groundout to make it 4-0 early.

Conneaut briefly answered with a solo bomb from Maddy Drew in the bottom half, but Jefferson responded with a nine-run second inning that buried the Spartans. Hill drove in two more, Sirrine added her RBI single, and the hit parade kept rolling with RBI knocks from Julia Sprague, Olivia Lewis, and Matuz.

In the third, Sirrine’s homer highlighted another three-run frame as Jefferson pushed the lead to 16-1. They tacked on a few more late to seal the mercy rule win.

Lewis got the start in the circle and went three solid innings, giving up just three hits and one run while striking out five. Sirrine came in to clean up the final two innings. Conneaut’s starter, Lexi Brown, took the loss, allowing 20 hits and 19 runs (18 earned).

Jefferson’s bats were on fire—20 hits total. Hill led the way with five RBIs and a 3-for-4 day. Alaina Barress set the tone at the top, going 4-for-5. Sirrine, Rylee Demattia, Kennidie Rogers, and Matuz all had multi-hit games, and the Falcons ran wild on the bases with eight steals.

For Conneaut, Drew led with a homer and two RBIs. Grace Todaro, Chloe Boyle, Brown, and Ella Boroski each chipped in a hit. Defensively, the Spartans stayed sharp with a double play and no errors. Jefferson heads to Grand Valley on Tuesday for their next matchup.

WARRIORS ROLL PAST SPARTANS IN CONFERENCE WIN

Story by: Larry Jennings

East Ashtabula, OH – The Edgewood Warriors delivered a dominant performance on Friday night, overwhelming the Conneaut Spartans 66-34 in a Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division showdown.

Edgewood (6-13, 4-6 CVC) wasted no time seizing control, exploding for a 27-8 lead in the first quarter. A well-balanced offensive attack saw eight different Warriors contribute to the early scoring spree, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

The momentum carried into the second quarter, where Edgewood outscored Conneaut 21-11. By halftime, the Warriors held a commanding 48-19 advantage, effectively putting the game out of reach.

While the Spartans (1-16, 0-10 CVC) managed to find some offensive rhythm in the second half, scoring 15 points in the final two quarters, they couldn’t chip away at the Warriors’ lead. Edgewood tallied 18 points in the second half to maintain their cushion and close out the convincing win.

One of the biggest disparities in the game came from beyond the arc, where Edgewood knocked down nine three-pointers compared to just one for Conneaut— a fourth-quarter shot from Cayson Hayes.

The Warriors were led by JJ DuFour and Sevion Chapman, who each finished with 12 points. Geno Measel added 11, Dallas Patterson contributed 10, and Devin Christine chipped in nine.

Conneaut’s Jordan Kulko led all Spartan scorers with 11 points, while Alden Goudge added seven.

The first half saw the Heralds establish control early, using a balanced offensive approach and strong perimeter shooting. Saint John edged out Conneaut 15-12 in the opening quarter and extended the lead to 34-25 by halftime. The Heralds’ sharpshooting from beyond the arc proved to be a decisive factor, as they drained 9 three-pointers, three of which came from senior Vin Narducci, who finished the night with 13 points.

The Spartans (1-13) found their rhythm in the third quarter, led by standout Jordan Kulko, who tallied a game-high 23 points.
