POLAND ALL OVER LAKEVIEW

Poland continued their NE8 dominance on Monday night with a 59-16 win over Lakeview.

Despite the margin of victory, it was not a flashy offensive performance from Poland. It took them several minutes to get their first points from the field. The Bulldogs led Lakeview 7-4 in the first quarter, and through the next two frames, they went on a 25-0 run to be up 32-4. Lakeview did put together a positive fourth quarter to get themselves in double figures. Lakeview actually did stay away from a ton of live-ball turnovers caused by Poland’s pressure. They moved the ball well, but just couldn’t get shots to fall. Poland got a lot of solid minutes from their reserves towards the closing of the game. The Bulldogs had 12 different players score for them.

Leading the offense tonight for Poland was Morgan Kluchar and Connie Cougras who both finished with 8. Kailyn Brown and Katie Masucci had 7 apiece.

Poland continues to play on Thursday as they host Jefferson.

COUGRAS ON THE PROWL

There are a lot of young talented players around the area that area in girls basketball getting attention. One that might be flying under the radar is Poland sophomore Connie Cougras. In typical fashion for this program, Connie does not mind being under the radar. It gives her more room to navigate and grow. One of the first players off of Poland’s bench, Cougras is becoming more and more of an impact as the season goes on. Development is not an issue when it comes to Cougras, she is able to understand what mistakes she makes and takes upon herself to get in the gym and work on them. She says she gets an extra boost of energy in practice after a game in which she wasn’t pleased with herself. This ability to self correct makes her very easy to coach. Coach Blanch couldn’t say enough about her work ethic. Connie has a brother Michael who is a senior in the boys program. She says his support, and her support of him has helped both of them out a lot. They haven’t had a sibling three point contest as of yet, but you never know one could be on the horizon. Connie has quickly become a key member of program. And for now, she’s doing it in the shadows. The Cougras is on the prowl. And you better believe you don’t want to be her prey.

Anthony Hartwig caught up with Connie this week. They discussed moving up to varsity, working through mistakes, and much more. Turn that volume dial all the way up and enjoy the latest Lady Bulldog Player Profile Cougras On The Prowl.

CARDINALS CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR POLAND

The rivalry for 224 is renewed. Canfield came in to Poland on Saturday afternoon and came away with an impressive four point victory 40-36.

The Bulldogs spent all day working hard for every point they got. The Cardinal Defense was suffocating and did not allow any free space for the Poland offense. The offensive struggles put Poland in an early 19-9 hole in the first half. Then freshman Arianna Daniels came off the bench and gave Poland a spark with a tough basket from the baseline. The Bulldogs ended the first half on a 9-0 run to only trail 19-18 at the break.

Kailyn Brown started to get things going in the third quarter as Poland tied up the game before heading into the final frame. With the score tied at 32 in the fourth Canfield hit a big three after securing a loose ball and catching Poland out of position. This would prove to be a turning point in the game as the Cardinals scored five of the next six points in the game. This was mainly due to three straight offensive rebounds off of free throws. Connie Cougras hit a late three but it was too little too late for the Bulldogs as they feel to Canfield 40-36.

Kailyn Brown led Poland with 12 points 10 rebounds. Connie Cougras gave the Bulldogs a strong 8 points off the bench.

Poland takes a week off and will host Liberty on Saturday January 4th.

POLAND UNITED IN WIN OVER BOARDMAN

POLAND OH- The Poland Lady Bulldogs hosted the United Way Classic Saturday and won their matchup on the day over Boardman 56-33.

The Bulldogs defense kept on their dominating as they held the Spartans to just 9 points in the first half. Boardman tried and tried to get open looks but it seemed every outside shot was highly contested. The Spartans did not shoot well from behind the arc. The Bulldogs complimented their strong defense with maybe their best offensive output of the season. They were up 30-9 at the break and their offense was starting to stay away from unforced turnovers. Connie Cougras was a big reason they had such offensive balance. She went 2 for 4 from three and gave the Bulldogs a great lift off the bench. The game was pretty much decided at the half. Coach Blanch used an opportunity to get younger kids into a big atmosphere. Almost everyone that got in the game was able to get on the scoreboard. And those that didn’t still get their name in the stat book with rebounds or assists. An entire team effort helped Poland cruise to a 56-33 win.

Jackie Grisdale led the Bulldogs with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Kailyn Brown was also in double figures with 12 points 8 rebounds. Connie Cougras finished with 9.

Poland returns to action Thursday as they travel to Jefferson.
