STEFANCIN STEPS UP

POLAND, OH- Last Friday night’s senior celebration at Poland High School was a night to remember for senior kicker, receiver, and punter Jas Stefancin. Emotions ran high as Stefancin walked the field with his supportive parents, marking the culmination of his high school football journey.

In an interview on YSN’s Pullen Bulldog Show, Stefancin shared his heartfelt experience. “Every emotion there is,” he said, describing the night. “Walking out as a senior with my mom and dad, who have helped me through everything, was really emotional.”

Though his mother teared up, his father maintained composure, understanding the critical game ahead. Known for their close pre-game rituals, Stefancin’s father has been integral in his son’s football career, right down to holding kicks during warm-ups. “It’s just amazing to have him there,” Stefancin noted, emphasizing the valuable advice his father provides due to his own experience as a kicker and punter.

During the game, Poland led 10-0 at half-time, thanks to Stefancin’s field goal. However, early in the second half, a Poland fumble gave Girard High a first-and-goal opportunity. Demonstrating their resilience, Poland’s defense, led by a significant sack from Oliver McCully, thwarted Girard’s scoring chance.

“Stuff’s going to happen,” Stefancin acknowledged. “We have to pick our teammate back up and get out there. It was a big team effort to stop them from scoring.”

Senior leadership was crucial as tensions mounted during the game. Stefancin, along with his fellow seniors, played a pivotal role in maintaining team composure. “We tried to do our best to keep everyone on a good level,” he explained, highlighting the importance of guiding younger teammates through high-pressure situations.

Looking ahead, Stefancin and his team are preparing for their next challenge against Lakeview. “It’s the same stuff day in and day out, what we’ve preached the whole year,” he said. “Mainly just go out there, have fun, and play some football.”

With seasoned leadership and strong team unity, Poland High aims for another victorious game, proving once again why they are a force to be reckoned with this season.

IN THE NICK OF TIME

CANFIELD, OH-  The Canfield Cardinals’ senior wide receiver and cornerback Nick Joseph is making waves on and off the field during his final high school football season. In an exclusive interview on YSN’s latest episode, Joseph shared insights into his journey, the significance of family support, and the team’s goals for the season.

Last Friday, Joseph played a pivotal role in Canfield’s thrilling victory against their archrival, the Poland Bulldogs, in the highly anticipated “Battle of 224.” Reflecting on the game, Joseph said, “It felt really good to get our get back from last year. It was a sad loss, but we made it work this year, and we’re very proud of it.”
The Canfield Cardinals are sitting at a 2-2 record and looking strong. Joseph attributes much of his success to his family’s unwavering support. “My family has done everything they could. They’ve come to every game. They’ve supported me. They wear a jersey with my name on it at every game, and they’re always bringing my grandparents,” he shared proudly.

When faced with the perennial question of whether he prefers offense or defense, Joseph’s current focus lies on the defensive side. “I’ve been liking defense a lot recently,” he admitted. He lauded the team’s defensive depth, highlighting the trust and cohesion within the squad.

The Cardinals, coached by Matt Ignazio, are prepping for a tough matchup against the Cheney Cowboys this Friday. Despite Cheney’s 1-3 record, Joseph recognizes their athleticism and speed, emphasizing the importance of focused practices.

As senior year advances, Joseph fondly recalls his journey from freshman year to now, noting the camaraderie among the senior class. “Our senior group, we’re a smaller class. We’ve had a lot of people leave our class, but we’ve stayed together and stayed friends,” he said.

Looking ahead, Joseph has ambitious academic goals, considering a future in engineering or business, with institutions like Miami University of Ohio on his radar.
Nick Joseph’s story is one of dedication, resilience, and community. As the Canfield Cardinals gear up for the rest of the season, Joseph’s leadership and passion will undoubtedly propel the team forward.

WHAT CAN 22 DO FOR YOU?

CANFIELD, OH- At Cocca’s Pizza this week, the spotlight shone brightly on Nick Berardino, the exceptional senior wide receiver and cornerback for the Canfield Cardinals. Wearing jersey number 22 with pride, Berardino’s journey from freshman year to senior stardom is nothing short of remarkable.
“It’s been a blink of an eye,” Berardino shared, reflecting on his high school career. Starting varsity as a sophomore, he quickly adapted to the demanding work ethic required to be a Cardinal, thanks to the guidance of role models like Brock Lowry, Santino  Cocca, and Danny Inglis.

For Berardino, donning the Cardinal insignia is a badge of honor. “It means representing everyone who will wear it in the future and who already has worn it and making sure you do the right things,” he explained, embodying the spirit of the team.
Asked about his personal hero, Berardino didn’t hesitate. “My dad,” he declared. A former football player himself, his father’s wisdom and character have deeply influenced Nick. “I want to be just like him.”

Off the field, Berardino is known for his academic achievements, ranking top in his class. This intellectual rigor translates seamlessly onto the field, where he’s built strong bonds with his teammates, thanks to countless hours of practice and camaraderie over summers and family vacations with fellow player and family friend, Enzo.

Leadership is a shared responsibility on the team, and Berardino’s approach is to lead by example, stepping up when needed.

Fuelled by Metallica’s “Fuel” before games and enjoying Monopoly during leisure time, Berardino is multifaceted, strong, and surprisingly open about his guilty pleasure: Rihanna’s tunes.

Family plays a pivotal role in Berardino’s life. He credits his success to the unwavering support of his parents and grandparents. “My dad is the best male role model I could ever ask for, and my mom is incredible,” he elaborated, his voice filled with admiration. His grandmother, the culinary wizard of the family, makes a birthday cake “out of this world”—a simple chocolate cake with vanilla frosting, but “made with love.”

As he heads into his final season, Berardino is set to leave an indelible mark on the Canfield Cardinals, both on and off the field. His journey through hard work, family values, and unyielding dedication highlights the true essence of a leader.
