MICKEY FAIRWAYS
CANFIELD, OH- In a thrilling highlight of the Canfield High School sports calendar, junior Mick Ambrose, known affectionately as “Mickey Fairways,” has broken a longstanding school golf record. Mick’s achievement, marked by an extraordinary display of putting prowess, has further cemented his standing as one of the top young golfers in the region.
Mick’s week was nothing short of remarkable. “It was unreal. I’ve never putted like that in my entire life,” Ambrose recounted. His nine birdies during the round showcased a touch of brilliance rarely seen at the high school level. Mick admitted that up until the 13th hole, he had no inkling he was on pace to set a new school record.
Coach’s nickname for Mick, “Mickey Fairways,” stems from his reputation for hitting remarkably accurate and consistent drives, albeit not the longest. Mick explained, “I just kept it straight.” However, a push from his coach to add distance temporarily disrupted his game, earning him the whimsical moniker “Mickey Upset.” Refocusing on his strengths proved to be the key to his success.
Off the greens, Mick’s personal life is also filled with family influence. Both his father and grandfather introduced him to the sport. Mick’s dad, a former Canfield High football player, now shares a competitive bond with his son over golf. Mick lauded his mother for her unwavering work ethic, describing her as “the rock of our family.”
Besides golf, Mick’s talents extend to basketball, where he enjoys making deep shots. Despite this, golf remains his primary focus, with ambitions to take his game as far as it can go, possibly even into coaching.
Mick’s dream destination for golf remains Scotland, famous for its challenging courses and harsh winds, which he believes would be a great test for any golfer. In terms of professional golfers, Mick admires Jordan Spieth for his short game and aspires to Scotty Scheffler’s winning consistency.
Mick’s journey in golf continues to be a testament to his dedication and the support of his family and friends. His latest record is not just a personal triumph but a proud moment for Canfield High School.
Congratulations to Mick Ambrose, Canfield’s own golfing prodigy, as he continues to inspire on and off the course.
