CANFIELD TAKES ANOTHER THRILLER

CANFIELD OH- Coming in to Monday, all of Canfield volleyball’s wins have been in five sets. That would not change tonight as Canfield took another thriller to beat Coventry 3-2. (25-27 25-13 25-15 22-25 15-13).

Sometimes you can tell how a varsity match will go by watching the JV game before it. If both JV teams are playing at a high level and competing its a solid bet that varsity will be a great match as well. That was the way things went Monday night. The JV’s went three sets in high level volleyball. The first set of varsity lived up to the hype the younger players put on it. A back and forth bout in set one where Canfield led 9-4, and then saw Coventry come back. No lead after the Comets came back surpassed two points. It took two points for the Comets to win set one 27-25.

Canfield responded nicely dominating sets two, and three. Abbie Householder caught fire and led the Cardinals to 25-13, and 25-15 wins. It seemed as if the Cardinals were going to sail to a four set victory.

However, the Comets had other plans. One of their better hitters, Brooke Mirka started to find a groove. She had 5 kills in the set and led the Comets to a 25-22 set four victory to force a decisive set five.

Min that set five, Canfield trailed 8-4 before rattling off eight straight points to lead 12-8. Then, the Comets came back and tied the set at 12-12. The Cardinals dig deep and found a way to win 15-13. Grace Rosko ended the match with a kill through the middle.

Householder led the Cardinals with 23 kills. Rosko was also in double digit kills with 11. Riley Kinkade led with 21 assists. Ally Quirk added 15.
