IRISH FIND GOLD AGAINST CHANEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The last time Ursuline won a season opener, they had to wait it out two hours in a double overtime win.  Tonight was a similar situation minus the overtime,  as the Irish took on the Chaney Cowboys.

Ursuline’s first big play came when Dante Walker recovered a Chaney fumble on the opening possession.  Few plays after, running back Trenton Hill burst into the end-zone six yards out making it 6-0 Irish after a failed two point conversion.

The Irish extended the score later on in the quarter as junior quarterback Brady Shannon found his favorite target in Miami Red-hawk commit Matthew Reardon making it 14-0. Shannon got his second TD of the night, lobbing it up to Dean Boyd making it 22-0, which was the last score until the weather delay.

After the delay, it was as if nothing changed.  Ursuline stopped the Cowboys offense and scored one more time and added one with a Dylan Peplowski extra point.

It was not all bad for Chaney as they did end on a good note getting a touchdown, but it was too late as the Irish got their first season opener win since 2016,  29-6.

Ursuline (1-0) will host Austintown Fitch next Friday, while Chaney (0-1) will head to Howland (0-1) to try to pounce on the Tigers.

INTERVIEW:

COWBOY UP; CHANEY CORRALS DISTRICT TITLE

BOARDMAN, OH – Just a few days prior to the one-year anniversary of Chaney’s heartbreaking overtime loss to the Poland Bulldogs in last year’s District Final, the Cowboys (19-6) completed their revenge tour with a 53-50 victory over the Struthers Wildcats (23-4). The Cowboys had a dominant second quarter, featuring a 14-0 run to start. The Wildcats would win each quarter beside one, proving Chaney’s 19-6 second quarter was too much.

Trailing by as much as 16, the Wildcats were able to fight their way back into the game. With just 52 seconds remaining, Struthers trailed by only 4. The Wildcats had only 5 team fouls so far in the half and as time ran down, they waited for the ball to get out of the hands of Chaney’s quality free throw shooters before they decided to foul, wasting almost 25 seconds without even sending a Cowboy to the line. With their next foul, Chaney’s Quincy Jones headed to the line for a one and one with just 26 seconds remaining. Jones would miss the front end, and Struthers’ Aidan Slocum would go coast to coast in just 6 seconds for a layup, bringing the margin to just 2. After a Struthers timeout, the Wildcats had a trap on Chaney’s Sharrod Taylor but Taylor would break free and after being fouled, would head to the line with 12 seconds remaining. Chaney would again miss the front end of the one and one, but an offensive rebound from Will Brown would keep the ball in the Cowboy’s hands and Struthers would be forced to send Chaney back to the line.

With the ball now in the hands of Travis Easterly, Chaney would miss the front end of the one and one for the third straight time and Struthers’ Carson Ryan grabbed the rebound. With only 6.1 seconds remaining, Ryan looking to push would turn the ball over on Struthers’s own end. An intentional foul sent Easterly back to the line for two shots, converting on one, putting the Cowboys ahead 53-50. With the ball still in hand due to the intentional foul, Chaney inbounded the ball off of Easterly’s foot, giving Struthers a chance with just 0.9 seconds remaining. Brandon Washington’s full-court heave would hit off the rafters, ending the Wildcats season.

COWBOYS BALANCED OFFENSE DESTROYS CANFIELD

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The Chaney Cowboys came in to Wednesday’s district semifinal with something to prove. They took care of fifth seeded Canfield with focus and balance in a 69-35 win.

It was a Cowboy dominated game from the tip. Chaney led 28-15 at the half, and was clearly the better team on this night. But just to add an explanation to that statement, William Brown threw down a pair of monster dunks in the third quarter to really swing the momentum scale all the way to the Cowboys. They used that to outscore Canfield 40-21 in the second half.

Chaney was led by Travis Easterly and Clive Wilson both with 12 points. Quincy Jones was also in double figures with 11. Brown finished with 10.

Chaney moves on to face the winner of Thursday’s Struthers vs Ursuline game in the district championship on Saturday at Boardman High School. Start time is set for 4:00.

CHANEY HAS NO TROUBLES WITH LEOPARDS

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The Cowboys had three scorers finish with 17 or more in an 88-46 rout of Liberty Tuesday night.

The Cowboys offense seemed unstoppable in a game that was a make up from a couple of weeks ago. The Cowboys scored their season-high 88 points.

Sharrod Taylor led the Cowboys with 22 points. Quincy Jones finished with 18, and Travis Easterly added 17.

FRYDA MAKES HISTORY; SPARTANS REJECT CHANEY’S UPSET BID

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Boardman Spartans hosted the Chaney Cowboys in one of the most exciting matchups in Youngstown. Boardman came in red hot at 18 and 1 overall, winning 8 consecutive. Chaney came in after a victory against Cardinal Mooney, with their record at 15 and 5.

The Cowboys came out strong with a 17 to 13 lead after one, but the Spartans stormed back to take the lead at half 35 to 29.

History was made during the first half, as Boardman senior Tommy Fryda knocked down his second three pointer of the night, to become the single season all time leader in made three pointers in Boardman history. Fryda finished the night with 6 three pointers, to put the record at 57 made three pointers so far.

The second half of this ballgame was a back and forth battle, as both teams fought to the very end. Sharrod Taylor kept Chaney afloat, scoring 15 of the 31 points scored by the Cowboys in the second half. Boardman was led by Derrick Anderson, who finished with 21 points on the night. The Spartans would come out victorious in this one, by a final score of 66-60. The Spartans remain undefeated at their home gymnasium, with a record of 11 and 0. They also improve to 19 and 1 on the year. Chaney drops to 15 and 6, losing the last 3 of 4.

Boardman will travel to take on Ursuline next Tuesday to try and pick up their 20th win of the season. They will then return home to take on Austintown Fitch next Friday to wrap up the regular season.
