THIRD TIMES A CHARM FOR CRESTVIEW

STRUTHERS OH- Crestview and Liberty has already met two times this season coming in to Wednesday night’s district semifinal matchup. Liberty took both games. The first matchup was a lopsided 18 point Leopard win, the second was much more competitive as the Rebels cut it to 4. They say third time is a charm and that couldn’t be more true for Crestview as this time they dominated Liberty from the tip and upset the Struthers district 1 seed 69-53.

Liberty actually started the game on top. They hit some perimeter shots to take leads in the first quarter. Crestview was able to score right with them, which would become a huge advantage as the game went on. Unlike the first two matchups, the Rebels did not let the Leopards get out to a big lead. After a quarter Liberty led by just one 12-11.

The shift of momentum came in the closing minutes of the second quarter when Crestview went on a 12-0 run to end the half and turn a 16-15 deficit to a 27-16 halftime lead. That lead only grew as the third quarter ticked on. Crestview saw themselves up by 18 midway through the third. They could taste the upset. However, Liberty has a quick strike offense and everyone in the gym understood that this could be a close game real quick. The Leopards held true to their form to close out the third and cut the Rebel lead to 10. A bucket right before the buzzer of the third made it 47-35 Crestview after 3.

In the fourth quarter it was clear
Liberty’s strategy was to put Crestview on the free throw line and make the game longer. That backfired as Crestview shot 21 for 27 on the line. Free throw shooting kept the Leopards at bay and secured the big upset victory for the Rebels.

Crestview has four players in double figures, and was led by Tanner Hoffer with 19. Krista Perry finished with 16, Addison Bandy got herself 15. Mara Halas added 10.

Crestview advances to the district championship against South Range on Saturday night at Struthers. The start time is set for 7:00.

MCDONALD BREAKS AWAY LATE; CRESTVIEW FALLS IN FINALE

COLUMBIANA, OH – As the 2019-2020 girls basketball season wraps up, the final game of the year for the Crestview Lady Rebels was a home, non-conference match up against a very talented McDonald Blue Devils team. The Lady Rebs also closed out their season with senior night to honor Madi Wick and Tanner Hoffer.

The first two quarters saw both teams battle each other with very little separation as Molly Howard’s three first half three pointers gave McDonald a 17-14 lead at the break. The third quarter saw much of the same as McDonald clung to a five point advantage heading into the final quarter. In that fourth quarter however, the Blue Devils sprung to life, as Crestview’s tough defense did all they could to try to contain Howard and Sophia Constantino, but ultimately, the Lady Rebels fell short, 43-29.

The McDonald Blue Devils were led by Molly Howard with 21 points and Sophia Constantino with 13 points.

The Crestview Lady Rebels were led by Krista Perry with 10 points and Addison Bandy with 8 points.

Up next for Crestview (14-8) will be their first game of the 2020 OHSAA state playoffs, as they will welcome the winner of the #5 Rootstown vs #12 Canton Central Catholic game to town on February 22nd.

COLUMBIANA OH- The Crestview Boys welcomes in Labrae On senior night Tuesday night but couldn’t muster up enough momentum to beat the Vikings. Labrae won 64-47. It was still a night where the Rebels got to recognize their seniors for the years of service to the program.

Three players for Crestview finished the game in double figures with 10 points. Jack Yerkey, Drake Golden, and Brandon Yanssens.

Crestview return to action on the road Tuesday as they travel to Leetonia.

CRESTVIEW BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH RICK GATES

COLUMBIANA, OH- One of the most recognizable names in Crestview Coaching History has made his return to “The ‘View” after a few years away from the high school bench.

Rick Gates once again dons the Black and Gold, and has the Boys Basketball team believing in themselves once again.  The Rebels look to return to the glory of big crowds, high octane offense, and championship pedigree defense.

We had a chance to sit down with Coach Gates to discuss the season to this point, his staff, and his passion for basketball.

TUNE UP THE BAND; REBELS ROLL RED DEVILS

COLUMBIANA, OH- Addy Bandy had herself a night against Campbell on Wednesday as the Rebels flexed their muscles against AAC foe, Campbell Memorial, 60-22.  Pacing her teammates out of the gate, Bandy shot her way to a career-high 20 points while ripping 6 boards, and three steals for Crestview.  Not only was her offense scorching, but she hustled her way up and down the court in a game that had a slow-moving pace early on.

Bandy was accompanied by Payton Huff’s 6 points, 5 boards, 4 steals, and three dishes to fill up the Rebel stat sheet.  Ashton Hughes turned in 7 boards in the victory as well.  Krista Perry had 11 points and Mara Halas had four steals in limited action as well.

For Campbell, India Armour-Clark led the point chase with 16.

Crestview (9-4) will now look to continue league play against LaBrae next Wednesday on the road.

BUSINESS IS BOOMIN; REBS BOP BROOKFIELD

COLUMBIANA, OH- What a difference a year makes.  A team that has been yearning for experience and leadership has now found it under the tutelage of veteran coach, Rick Gates.  More importantly, though, Coach Gates has his team believing they can step toe-to-toe with anybody they face.

On Friday night, Brookfield had a firsthand glimpse of the new-look Rebels in the Rebeldome.

In a game that went down to the wire, Crestview was able to hang on for a 56-54 victory that featured the Rebs going 19 of 25 from the free-throw stripe.  Junior, Drake Golden led the Rebels with a 23 point effort, while Jack Yerkey was clutch in a 9-point performance.

Connor Stevens had 19 for the Warriors, while Haden Gibson added a dozen.

Crestview now gears up to head to Springfield on Saturday to take on the Tigers.  Game is set for 7pm.

REBELS UNWRAP A VICTORY OVER SPRINGFIELD

COLUMBIANA, OH- Nothing gets you in the Christmas spirit quite like a dominating win. Crestview enjoyed a 63-36 win over Springfield on Monday night.

Crestview shot the lights out of the gym as the whole team shot well from three. The Rebels had five different players hit a three-pointer. They shot 50% from beyond the arc (7/14). The Tigers had no answer for the strong shooting performance. With Tanner Hoffer in foul trouble early, Krista Perry has a dominant first half with 19 points at the break. The Rebel defense came close to holding the Tigers to their lowest total of the season as Springfield tacked on a couple of buckets late to avoid that stat.

Krista Perry led the Rebels with career-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Shianna Mathis and Tanner Hoffer both finished in double figures with 10.

The Rebels return to action Saturday as they travel to Lowellville.

LADY REBELS FLEX AGAINST BROOKFIELD

COLUMBIANA, OH- If you look “grit” up in the dictionary, there’s bound to be a reference to the 2019-2020 Crestview Lady Rebel Basketball Team.  OK, maybe not literally, but there should be.  Especially after the slow start to the evening, the Lady Rebs were determined to pick up a key win at home and did just that to the tune of 50-22 over Brookfield.

Crestview shot 35% from the field and went 3/16 from beyond the arc, but were still able to find big transition buckets and HUGE rebounding opportunities that turned into buckets.  In fact, the Rebels- as they’ve done each game this year, outrebounded their opponents.  Against Brookfield, it was a 37-21 advantage for Crestview.

Point Park recruit, and Senior Rebel- Tanner Hoffer had an explosive night with 15 points and 9 boards along with 3 steals.  Krista Perry also chipped in on the victory with 14 points, 9 boards, 4 assists, and a steal.  Mara Halas made a triumphant return to the lineup with 10 points, 3 caroms, and 3 helpers as well.

Crestview goes to 4-2 on the young season, and will now take on Hubbard on Saturday at 1:30.

REBELS OUTLAST BLUE DEVILS IN DEFENSIVE BATTLE

LISBON, OH – On a night where both teams were in search of a season turning win, it was the Crestview Rebels that traveled down to Lisbon and came home with a 49-43 victory over the Lisbon Blue Devils.

The two teams were almost perfectly matched with one another throughout the entire game as the lead for either team did not grow beyond 6 points up until the final quarter. The Rebels and Blue Devils both matched each other in the first quarter, 10-10. Lisbon then started off the second quarter with two quick scores but the Rebels chipped away and drew even once again at the half, 21-21. The third quarter saw the two squads battle it out and trade buckets, drawing even once again at the end of the third, 32-32. The final frame had the action everyone was waiting for as the Rebels turned up the defense and hit a few key shots in route to the victory.

The Crestview Rebels were led by Drake Golden who finished the night with 22 points on 9/12 shooting and 8 rebounds.

The Lisbon Blue Devils were led by Ryan McCullough with 16 points on 5/13 shooting and 5 rebounds.

Up next for Crestview is another road test, as they travel to Champion to take on the Golden Flashes on December 20th. The Lisbon Blue Devils will continue their homestand on December 17th, as they will welcome the Leetonia Bears to town in an EOAC match up.
