GET TO KNOW “BIG JOE”
CANFIELD, OH- The South Range Raiders show, hosted live from GIAngelo’s, turned into an emotional and heartwarming evening as the community gathered for a special cause. This week’s episode featured South Range ‘ball boy’ Joey Biroschak and his mother, Elizabeth Biroschak, who shed light on Kabuki Syndrome and the struggles and resilience associated with it.
As part of an initiative supported by YSN and OMG Apparel, the introduction of the “Raider Rag” aims to raise both money and awareness for Kabuki Syndrome through their “All Things Kabuki” campaign. Raider fans can purchase the rag for $5, with $1 from each sale donated directly to the nonprofit foundation dedicated to Kabuki Syndrome advocacy.
Elizabeth provided an insightful overview of Kabuki Syndrome, a genetic disorder impacting multiple parts of the body. Joey, who has Type 1 Kabuki Syndrome, deals with several challenges, including hearing aids, glasses, a heart defect, low muscle tone, and skeletal abnormalities. Despite these difficulties, Elizabeth proudly shared that Joey continues to thrive, embodying a fighting spirit and zest for life.
“Joey has been a fighter from day one,” Elizabeth stated. “He loves being involved with the South Range Raiders and has found a supportive community here.”
Joey’s journey has been significantly impacted by the supportive South Range Community. Elizabeth highlighted the invaluable role played by Joey’s teacher, Mrs. Martz, and the Starkey family, who have embraced Joey with open arms, offering encouragement especially during his wrestling endeavor.
The highlight of the evening came with a special presentation of the first-ever Raider Rag to Joey, solidifying his place as a beloved member of the South Range family. With a gleeful wave to the audience and the Raiders’ spirit coursing through the crowd, Joey’s infectious enthusiasm was palpable.
DJ Yokley, the show’s host, acknowledged the unique bond that the community shares with the Biroschak family. “We’re thrilled to have Joey as part of our community,” Yokley said. “He’s told me he’s going to take over my job one day, and I believe he could!”
The evening wasn’t just about awareness; it was a testament to the power of community and inclusiveness, proving that support and encouragement can make a profound difference in the lives of those facing rare conditions like Kabuki Syndrome.
For those interested in supporting Joey and others in the Kabuki community, Raider Rags are available for purchase, with an additional push for fans to bring them to the game against the Girard Indians this Friday for a special presentation.
As the South Range Raiders gear up for their next game, the spirit of unity and resilience demonstrated by Joey Biroschak serves as a powerful reminder of what it truly means to be part of the Raider family.
