TRUST IN Q

East Liverpool, OH — Quintin Conrad, a senior at East Liverpool High School, is embracing his final year as a Potter with a mature and dedicated approach. Known affectionately by his peers and coaches as “Q,” Conrad is determined to lead his basketball team with the same drive and focus that has characterized his high school career.

Fresh off an impressive football season where East Liverpool advanced two rounds deep into the playoffs, Conrad is translating that success and momentum onto the basketball court. “Coach has been instrumental in pushing us to be our best,” Conrad said. His football background has helped him bring a heightened sense of urgency and teamwork to his basketball endeavors.

Conrad’s preparation for basketball season began even before football ended. “Around week eight of football, I texted my old coach to start basketball practices in the mornings,” he shared. This seamless transition showcases his relentless work ethic and commitment to excellence. The senior is not just a force on the court but also in the classroom. Balancing athletics with challenging academic courses, such as AP Literature and Physical Science, Conrad has managed to excel despite the pressure. “My mom set a high standard for me, and though it’s tough, I enjoy the challenge,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of time management in juggling his responsibilities.

As one of a large group of seniors on the basketball team, Conrad thrives on the daily competition and camaraderie this brings. Each player’s spot is earned daily, making for an environment that propels everyone to give their best efforts. “I think we’re the best team in the area,” Conrad confidently claimed. The senior also draws immense pride from representing the East Liverpool community. “Our fan base is incredible,” he said, recounting how packed stadiums serve as a testament to the town’s unwavering support.

Looking ahead, Conrad is actively exploring opportunities to continue his athletic career at the collegiate level, particularly in track, where recruitment prospects appear promising. Regardless of where he ends up, his love for competition and consistency in striving for greatness stands out. Conrad attributes much of his success and resilience to his family. “A big thank you to my mom, my little brother, and my little brother’s dad. They push me to be the best every day,” he concluded. As Quintin Conrad embarks on his final year in high school, his dedication to his team, his schoolwork, and his community shines brightly. The Potters are in capable hands this season with a leader like Conrad steering the ship.

BOARDMAN BOYS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH STEVE FLORES

BOARDMAN, OH- In a bustling high school gym shimmering with anticipation, DJ Yokley sat down for a compelling conversation with Steve Flores, the newly appointed head coach of the Boardman Spartans boys’ basketball team. The setting was perfect, encapsulated within the festivities of “Spartans Giving,” an event that brought the community and school together in a remarkable spectacle of camaraderie.

Flores, in his first year at the helm, emphasized the intrinsic value of events like Spartans Giving. “Anything you can do to promote team building and connection with the community,” Flores shared, highlighting the inclusive nature of the event that went beyond just basketball to include all winter sports.

Though not a Boardman native, Flores has made the town his home. Originally from East Liverpool, his deep-rooted ties to Boardman, including his family’s engagement with the school and community, have made him a perfect fit for the role. “I’ve made my home here. My kids go to school here. My wife teaches here. So, to be coaching at a great school like this, it’s just a big honor,” he explained.

When asked about his nerves entering such a prominent position, Flores dismissed the notion, replacing it with sheer excitement. With less than a week away from their first game, the team is eager to showcase their hard work against Uniontown.

Known for its passionate basketball fan base, Boardman’s basketball heritage is something Flores holds in high regard. “High school sports is just so special,” he noted, reminiscing about the palpable excitement that Friday night games bring—echoing sounds of the band and the thrill of competition.

For the upcoming season, Flores plans to bring a fresh, vibrant energy to the team. He expressed high hopes for his roster teeming with both returning talents and promising young players. Stars like Terrell McDowell, Grayson Eichert, and newcomers like Jace Varley are ready to dazzle the court.

In his journey, Flores attributes significant support to Pat, a previous coach, and his wife, Jen, who have both helped ease some of the burdens associated with his demanding role. “I couldn’t ask for a better situation to step into,” he said appreciatively.

As the season’s dawn approaches, Flores encourages all Spartan alumni and fans to rally behind the team. “We may not be the biggest or quickest every night, but we will be the hardest working, most physical team,” he declared with conviction.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, Flores concluded by reflecting on his gratitude for the opportunity to coach such a dedicated group of boys, emphasizing his commitment to their growth both on and off the court.

As the Boardman Spartans gear up for their season, one thing is certain—the community’s heart beats vigorously in anticipation of a thrilling journey under Coach Steve Flores’ guidance.

BEAVER LOCAL BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH NICK MILLER

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- In anticipation of the 2024-2025 basketball season, Beaver Local’s boys basketball team is poised for action under the sage guidance of Head Coach Nick Miller. In an exclusive conversation on YSN’s latest podcast episode, Coach Miller shared insights into the team’s preparation and expectations.

Reflecting on last season’s close games, Coach Miller emphasized, “We lost some tight games early on which shaped how we approached the rest of the season. This year, we’re focusing on those lessons to be better prepared from the start.” He pointed out that the team needs to excel in the “grit and grind” aspects of the game, such as winning 50-50 balls and making free throws, to turn those narrow losses into victories. As the team fine-tuned its half-court strategies in preparation for the opener, Coach Miller highlighted the importance of sharp execution in their competitive Buckeye 8 conference. The conference promises to be highly competitive, with key opponents such as Harrison Central, St. Clairville, and cross-town rival East Liverpool.

Non-conference matchups will also test the Beavers, including an intriguing opening game against Crestview and challenging contests against strong basketball programs like West Branch and Minerva later in the year. Coach Miller’s dedication to the Beaver Local community and its athletic program is evident, stating, “We’ve really grown in terms of camaraderie. The kids and coaches from different sports work together each summer, and it’s a great experience here at Beaver Local.” Miller, a proud Beaver Local alum, cherishes his role, saying, “Every day I’m living my dream.”

He also credited his extensive coaching staff and dedicated volunteers for their tireless support of the program, underscoring that the success of the team is a collective effort. Beaver Local fans can catch the boys in action at their home opener against Crestview on December 4th. Coach Miller and his squad are excited for the support and are eager to make this season memorable.
