TAYLOR’S 1000TH POINT COMES WITH CHANEY’S SECTIONAL WIN

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Another playoff game, another victory by 30 plus points for the Chaney Cowboys (10-6). Although Chaney headed into the half up by 18 points, the consensus was the Cowboys played a sloppy first half.

Sharrod Taylor’s eclipsing of the 1000-point mark and becoming just the 2nd player in Chaney history to reach 1000 points highlighted the half, while Clive Wilson’s two second quarter dunks played second fiddle.

If Chaney’s first half play was considered sloppy, their second half play was the complete opposite, sharp. Picking up their defensive pressure, the Cowboys held the visiting Edgewood Warriors (5-10) to just 14 points in the half.

To match their defensive prowess, the Showtime Cowboys brought it on the offensive side as well. Five different players scored for the Cowboys in their 30point 3rd quarter. Sharrod Taylor led the way with 10, while Josiah Gonzalez and Cam Lawrence added 7 and 6 of their own, respectively.

The only thing that could stop the Showtime Cowboys was the running clock. Instituted in the 4th quarter, the running clock held Chaney to just 14 points in the final quarter, leaving the Cowboys shy of the century mark, but still victorious, 91-43.

LEADING SCORERS:

Chaney

Sharrod Taylor 30 points

Josiah Gonzalez – 15 points

Cam Lawrence 12 points

Edgewood

Isaiah Harris12 points

Ben Welthy – 11 points

FALCONS BOUNCE BACK AGAINST EDGEWOOD

JEFFERSON OH- The Jefferson Girls Tennis squad bounced back from their loss on Monday with a 5-0 win over Edgewood on Tuesday. Jefferson returns to NE8 play on Wednesday as they host Lakeview.

TURVEY STEALS THE SHOW, REBS TOP WARRIORS

COLUMBIANA, OH-  Edgewood’s Alec Katon was nearly perfect.  Crestview’s Senior Devin Turvey just showed a bit more moxie on Saturday.  The Crestview Rebels struck late and walked away with a big 2-1 victory over the Warriors on Saturday.

Katon was downright impressive on the bump for the Warriors.  The Edgewood ace sat down 9 Rebels via the strikeout, only giving up two hits while walking 3.  However, it was Crestview that made each of those two hits hurt when it counted the most.

It wasn’t until the fifth inning when catcher, Keith Berger came through for the Rebels to break up Katon’s no-no.  That base knock gave the Rebels a bit of swagger and momentum in the late stages of the game.

As for the Rebels, it was a very gutsy performance by Turvey on the mound.  The Crestview southpaw went the distance pitching all seven innings for the Rebs, while scattering four hits, walking three, and striking out four on one earned run in the second frame.  However, that’s not the storyline for this one: Turvey was put in a huge spot when in the sixth inning Isaac Ricketts and Carter Blakeman were plunked back to back by Katon.  Turvey stepped to the dish and delivered a one-out, 2 RBI double to right center field that cleared the bases, and gave the Rebs their first lead of the game 2-1.

Turvey would come back out to the bump to finish the game, finishing with 105 pitches on the day.

MELLINGTON, REBELS OUTLAST LADY WARRIORS

COLUMBIANA, OH- You just never know what Lady Rebel will hurt the opposition the most these days.  Crestview proved that theory and dug into their toolbox again on Saturday in a 7-2 Victory over Edgewood.  Taylor Mellington proved to be the hero during this weekend’s matchup.

In the top of the first inning, Edgewood’s Julianna Sloan hit a line drive single then advanced on an overthrow to second base. Then with 2 outs, Sara Drake hits a single to score Sloan. The Lady Rebs would respond n the bottom of the second inning when Skyler Mattern led off with a single followed by a Baylie Bettura single, and then a sac fly from Taylor Mellington scoring Crestview’s first run. Crestview would go on to score three runs in the inning.

Crestview would pull away in the 4th inning when they strung along 5 hits in a row to put 4 more on the board to make the score 7-1, and essentially close the door on the Lady Warriors.

Taylor Mellington would lead the Lady Rebels with 2 hits, an RBI and 2 stolen bases. Kaedyn Sutton added 2 hits to the cause as well. It was a great team effort with 8 out of the 9 starters contributing a hit. For Edgewood Katyln Ezzone, Claire Rudolph and Sara Drake each had 2 hits.

Sutton picked up the win for the Rebels while Ezzone suffered the loss for Edgewood. Crestview improves to 14-2 on the season (7-0 AAC) the Rebels will travel to LaBrae on Monday.
