EAST PALESTINE GIRL’S BBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH WILL FRANKLIN (EP 1)

Veteran East Palestine Head Coach Will Franklin has been a part of the program for quite some time, and the game that transpired recently against Lisbon in the Dog Pound was enough to give any coach a good night’s rest.

After a 50-49 victory over the Lady Blue Devil’s YSN’s DJ Yokley caught up with Coach Franklin to discuss the progression he’s seen in his time in Bulldog Country, as well as many other topics including what it’s like to coach young teams and transforming them to champions.

Hit the hardwood with all that and more with Episode 1 of East Palestine Girl’s BBall Coach’s Corner with Will Franklin!

BEARS LOOK TO REBOUND IN 2018-2019

“First year in the rodeo” is the way that veteran Head Coach Jeff Hammond described all but two of the young Bears this coming season. The Leetonia Bears open up the 18-19 campaign against Lowellville on Friday night at home and look to improve from their 5-18 season a year ago. With sights aimed high, the Bears are looking to overcome adversity and obstacles that they face this season.

One obstacle that the team is trying to overcome is the season-ending injury to senior point guard Roman Ferry. Ferry was the leading scorer for the 2017-2018 season where he averaged 18.3 points per game in 29.7 minutes of action.  Coach Hammond stated that losing Roman Ferry for the season was a major blow to the team.”

The inexperienced Bears are looking for leadership on the floor from Brock Simpson and Quentin Craik this season. Coach Hammond is further looking for growth this season from his sophomores Ian Davis, Dylan Lennon, Jordan Baker, and Marco Ferry due to increased playing time.  The Bears are deep at the varsity level and look to dress nine players for varsity.

While depth may be plentiful for the Bears, one area of concern will be size. Senior Quentin Craik is going to be the tallest player on the roster as he is listed at 6’3. Because of this lack of size, coach Hammond said that rebounding would be a challenge on a nightly basis. Their plan to generate offense is with increased three-point shooting percentages and limiting turnovers.

The Bears open up with the Lowellville Rockets Friday night where they face a unique challenge in trying to stop Matt Hvisdak,  who coach Hammond describes as an all-conference caliber point guard” and someone who can “score and distribute to anyone on the floor”.   Leetonia looks to stop direct layup opportunities by limiting turnovers and coach Hammond further stated “ we can’t hurt ourselves too much and expect to keep up with them.”

The Rockets and Bears tip off jayvee action at 5:30, followed by the varsity at 7. YSN will be bringing you live audio/video streaming of the varsity action on ysnlive.com/leetonia

CONTINUE THE CLIMB: PARKER SHERRY

For his entire life, East Palestine’s Parker Sherry has been climbing.  What started out as hay bails, trees, and hills that were being climbed turned into depth charts, record books, and now prospect stock.

Sherry has a gratefulness about him that is very contagious, but don’t misinterpret his genuine love for the game of football for weakness.  Sherry has long ago been bitten by the competitive bug and takes the same winning mentality from the gridiron to game night with his family.

When you see the brown and white jersey running around on Friday nights, it’s comparable to watching a video game.  He can beat you with his arm, his legs, and if that doesn’t do the trick: his pure determination will overwhelm anything you have left in the tank.

Most Easily Stated: Parker Sherry is a winner.

His character is never in question as he is just as involved in the community as he is in the huddle.  He is soon to be awarded the Valedictorian of East Palestine’s graduating class.  His leadership among his peers both in the classroom, as well as between the lines sets him apart from his numbers alone.

Oh, that’s right.  The numbers.  Take a look at these:

————————————————-

2018 :

Passing: 131/232 for 1,852 yards/21 TD’s

Rushing: 1,021 Rushing Yards/12 TD’s

CAREER:

Passing: 510/877 for 7,374 yards/77 TD’s

Rushing: 4,335 Rushing Yards/55 TD’s

11,709 Total Yards and 132 TD’s

All those yards, and not to mention the list of his achievements that now include the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award for Ohio, and National Max Preps Athlete of the Month (Video Below.)

We sat down with Parker and discussed the importance of his leadership, character, and what he does on and off the field, as well as what the next hill is he will attempt to climb.  Our Feature Story of CONTINUE THE CLIMB: PARKER SHERRY is proudly sponsored by Coaches Tribune.

The game has arrived!  The one all Bulldogs circle on their calendar when it comes out!

COLUMBIANA.

The Dogs are in a position to end the season with a winning record and play spoiler to the Clippers EOAC Title and Senior Night in Clipperville.

We caught up with Coach Foster to talk about last week’s big win against Lisbon, the legacy of this year’s Senior Class, and what is in store for the guys in red.

All that and more on this week’s East Palestine Coach’s Corner!

THE FIGHT OF FIGLEY

It’s very difficult to stick to traditions in sports culture nowadays.  Today’s athletic society is much more of a ‘standout’ or ‘branding’ opportunity that athletes at all levels see as a platform for personal gain.  One exception remains in East Palestine where tradition stands tall on Friday nights.  From one generation to the next, you know if you see a brown and white “25” coming at you, you know it’s a Figley, and you know you’re in for a long night.
The Figley name is synonymous with East Palestine, and for Bulldog Senior, Elijah Figley, he’s no different.  As opponents line up, their first read of the Bulldog offense is locating Figley, and taking every blade of grass possible, because, within a blink of an eye, the defender is looking at the stitching on the back of Figley’s jersey.
Our Dan Figley caught up with Elijah to discuss plans on and off the field as well as the family name, and the rich tradition that goes along with it.  East Palestine’s Player Profile is: THE FIGHT OF FIGLEY
