HUBBARD FALLS JUST SHORT IN GENEVA

GENEVA, OH- It was a tale of two halves last night at Spire Institute. The first saw domination on both sides of the ball for Hubbard. Coming out of the gates hot, Evan Jarvis and company needed just 6 plays in 3 minutes to get into the endzone and on the board first.

After sophomore Yianni Hazimihalis stepped in front of Geneva quarterback Ben Scibona’s pass, Hubbard would take over at midfield. Unfortunately for Hubbard, this drive would entail the first of many turnovers on the night, when Jarvis’ pass was picked off at the Geneva 40-yard line.

Following a scoreless Geneva drive, Hubbard would take over at their 20 and marched down the field in just 12 plays, capping it off with a 24-yard touchdown run by T.C. Caffey. Geneva would respond with a touchdown of their own on the ensuing possession, but T.C. Caffey was able to push the game back out to two scores with another touchdown run, this time from 42 yards out, allowing Hubbard to go into the half ahead, 19-7.

Hubbard had dominated the first half, but the second was all Geneva. Receiving the ball first in the second half, Geneva would convert on 4thdown twice and would take over 8 minutes to get into the endzone, moving the score to 19-14.

Looking to pick up where they left off, Hubbard started their drive at their own 26, but ended it at their own 24, going 3 and out before punting the ball away.

The only people stopping Geneva in the second half were themselves, and they did just that on the ensuing possession when a holding penalty set them back and would eventually lead to a punt.

After finding receiver, Landan Bates on the near sideline, Jarvis and company were back in Geneva territory, but the senior quarterback would put the ball on the ground for his 2nd turnover of the game.

 

On Geneva’s next drive, it appeared as if the entire city was taking on the Hubbard defense, as they marched methodically down the field, and into the endzone for their first lead of the game with just 2:19 remaining, a successful 2 point conversion put Geneva ahead 22-19.

Down but not out, Hubbard took the field at their own 30-yard line. After a great run by T.C. Caffey for a 16-yard gain, a late hit by a Hubbard offensive lineman would negate the big gain and momentum shift. The very next play, Jarvis floated one over the middle and had his pass intercepted.

After a huge stop by the Hubbard defense, Geneva was forced to punt with a little over 1-minute remaining in the game. Selling out for the punt, Hubbard was able to block it, and take over at the Geneva 36 yard-line trailing by a field goal.

Taking advantage of the aggressiveness of Geneva in the second half, Hubbard dialed up a screen pass to T.C. Caffey, who would get down to the 10-yard line, but once again, the huge gain by Caffey was negated, this time by a questionable holding call.

With their best play wasted, Hubbard had nothing to produce through the air. On 4th down with their season on the line, Jarvis lobbed one down the field in hopes of a big play from the receiver, but his pass would be picked off, his 3rd interception of the game, 4th total turnover. For the second straight year in a row, Hubbard has given a team their biggest win in school history.

 

UP NEXT

Hubbard: Although not confirmed, there have been talks of Hubbard taking on Niles (5-3), who also was eliminated this Friday in the playoffs.

Geneva: The Eagles will face off against the #1 ranked team in Division 3, the Chardon Hilltoppers (7-0).

HUBBARD OUTFLIES AVIATORS IN ROUND 1 SHOOTOUT

HUBBARD, Ohio –Trailing by just one coming out of halftime, the Hubbard offense looked to get rolling early. On the opening drive of the second half, the Eagles needed just 5 plays to get into the endzone. Two minutes and 54 seconds into the half, Hubbard was back out in front thanks to another long touchdown run from T.C. Caffey, this one from 53yards out.

After forcing a three and out, Hubbard would take possession at their own 28-yard line. Quarterback Evan Jarvis and company took just 3 plays to get back in striking position. Gains of 6 and 36 from Jarvis, accompanied by a 34-yard Caffey carry, left the Eagles with just 2 yards to pay dirt.

Only 2 yards to go, Jarvis’ next 3 carries totaled for a loss of 3 yards. Staring at 4th and goal ahead by 5, Coach Hoffman decided to keep the offense on the field and needed to convert on 4th and goal. Luckily for Hubbard, the decision paid off. Jarvis rolling out to his left was able to find fellow senior, Andrew Frank, in the front of the endzone for a diving touchdown grab.

Hubbard’s three and out to start the third quarter would prove to be the difference-maker in this one. Following the Eagle’s touchdown to put them ahead by two scores, each possession would end in touchdowns for both teams. The Aviators had multiple opportunities to get the Eagle offense off the field but were unsuccessful. Hubbard’s third drive off the half consisted of 2 fourth-down conversions, the final one being an 8-yard touchdown pass from Jarvis to Brant Boraweic.

Hubbard: It’s a battle of the Eagles next week, as Hubbard survives and advances to take on Geneva (6-1). Geneva, the #8 seed, defeated the HarveryRed Raiders (1-6), for the second time this season, 37-0.

Alliance: Eliminated from the playoffs, the Aviators season is not over. Next Friday night they are scheduled to take on the Minerva Lions (0-6). However, Minerva will take on Beaver Local in the first round of the playoffs tonight.

SOUTH RANGE CRUISES TO NE8 TITLE

HUBBARD, Ohio – On the finale of the regular season, Hubbard and South Range faced off to decide the NE8 conference champion. The Eagles needed to win to grab at least a share of the conference title, partnered by a Poland loss would have given them the outright championship. All South Range needed was to beat Hubbard to secure their first NE8 Football title, and they did it in style.

From the start, the Raiders looked to attack. After winning the toss, the Raiders elected to receive and only needed 7 plays to get on the board. On a drive that saw big gains from junior running back Dylan Dominguez and senior quarterback Michael Patrone, Dominguez was able to punch it in from 13 yards out just a little over two minutes into the game.

Hubbard, set to start their drive at the Eagle 31-yard line, marched out their third starting quarterback in three weeks. Following injuries to first string Kobe Krisuk and backup Evan Jarvis, sophomore Nik Hendrix got the start week 5 against Poland. With Jarvis back in the lineup this week, he was now tasked with the quarterback duties.

Unfortunately for Jarvis, things got off to a rocky start. On the third play of the drive, Jarvis’ first pass of the game was intercepted and set the Raiders up at the Hubbard 33.

Four minutes after his first score, Dominquez was able to find the endzone again, this time from 7 yards out, increasing the Raider lead to 14. Hubbard already trailing by two scores needed to produce on their second drive of the game, and who else to turn to but T.C. Caffey. On the first play of the drive, all Jarvis needed to do was give the ball to Caffey and watch him work. Bouncing it out to the left before snapping a defender off with an impressive spin move, Caffey had nothing but green in front of him on his way to a 67-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 14-7.

Just as Hubbard got their first bit of momentum, South Range struck fast to rip the rug right out from the Eagles. Responding to Caffey’s big run, Dominguez took one of his own runs up the far sideline into the endzone from 68 yards out.

Following a Hubbard three and out, South Range moved the ball down the field at will. The Raiders went 65 yards in 6 plays, capping their drive with a 28-yard jet sweep to pay dirt from senior Luke Blasko.

Trailing by three scores, Hubbard was in desperation mode and not looking to go away easily. The Eagles attacked the edges of the South Range defense, hitting them again and again with the outside run. Brant Boraweic would put an exclamation point on Hubbard’s first sustaineddrive of the game on a jet sweep from 26 yards out, bring the score to 28-14.

On the Raider ensuing possession, Dominguez would put the ball on the ground, allowing Hubbard to take over at the Raider 32. This was the Eagle’s time to strike and make it a one-score game prior to halftime, but instead would go three and out and allow South Range to march down the field and see Harley Novak put one through the uprights from 32 yards out going into the half.

While the first half saw these two teams trading blows, the second half was all South Range. Scoring on 2 of their first 3 drives of the half, the Raiders were able to expand their lead to 44-14 and put the running clock into effect. Having no answer for the South Range defensive line, Hubbard failed to put points on the board to stop the running clock.

*Last night was just the 2nd time in Hubbard’s history that the running clock has come into effect with them on the losing side. *

UP NEXT

Hubbard: It’s a familiar foe for the Eagles next week. After being voted the #9 seed in Region 9, Hubbard will take on #24 Alliance (0-6). The Eagles and Aviators faced off both in 2018 and 2019. Hubbard won big in their first matchup, 63-13, but the Aviators were able to get revenge on their home turf last season, winning 17-13.

South Range:  Voted as the #2 seed in Region 17, the Raiders have a bye next week. They will await the winner of #15 Harrison Central (3-3) and #18 Rootstown (2-4).

RAIDERS COMEBACK ON THE EAGLES

South Range baseball took home a 4-3 victory over Hubbard on Tuesday.

Hubbard got on the board in the first inning.  Lukas Mosora grounded out, scoring one run.

The Raiders pulled away for good with three runs in the fourth inning.  In the fourth Luke Blasko singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run and Kris Scandy singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.

Sam Brooks led things off on the pitcher’s mound for Raiders. He surrendered three runs on seven hits over four innings, striking out eight and walking zero.

Andrew Corrin was on the pitcher’s mound for Hubbard. He lasted five innings, allowing four hits and four runs while striking out three.  Dylan Durkos threw one inning out of the bullpen.

Luke Blasko led the Raiders with two hits in three at bats.  Raiders stole eight bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Trey Pancake led the way with three.

Hubbard racked up eight hits in the game.  Evan Jarvis and Jamie Thomson each racked up multiple hits for Hubbard.  Jarvis went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Hubbard in hits.

GEHRING SHUTS OUT EAGLES, RAIDERS SAIL TO A WIN

Jake Gehring didn’t allow a single run against Hubbard, throwing a complete game shutout and leading the Raiders to a 3-0 victory on Monday night.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Jake Gehring struck out 13, while Joey Barr sat down six.

The Raiders got on the board in the first inning.  Jake Gehring singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

A double by Evan Jarvis in the first inning was a positive for Hubbard.

Jake Gehring took the win for the Raiders. He surrendered zero runs on four hits over seven innings, striking out 13.

Barr took the loss for Hubbard. He went seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out six.

Jake Gehring, Dylan Dominguez, Trey Pancake, Jard Bajerski, and Josh Stear all had one hit to lead Raiders.  Raiders didn’t commit a single error in the field. Jared Bajerski had the most chances in the field with 13.  Raiders tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Jared Bajerski led the way with two.
