DEARMITT HAS DESTINY ON HER SIDE

LEAVITTSBURG OH-  LaBrae High School’s softball team is on a tear this season, and much of their success has been driven by the stellar play and humble leadership of sophomore standout Leah DeArmitt. Recently highlighted on the YSN Live podcast, DeArmitt discussed her pivotal role on a squad known for its unity, talent, and record-setting plays.

DeArmitt made headlines last weekend after a jaw-dropping diving catch in the outfield—a play that quickly went viral on social media. Despite the excitement, DeArmitt downplayed the moment, crediting her coach’s last-minute adjustment and her focus on just making the catch. “My coach moved me in the pitch before, and then it got hit over my head, but I just wanted to make the catch,” she said modestly. The Vikings, propelled by strong pitching and collective effort, have pushed deep into the playoffs with DeArmitt contributing both in the circle and as a reliable outfielder. She credits the program’s family-like atmosphere: “We all just work together collectively, and our coaches do a great job of keeping everyone excited and together. I think that’s just really special to have.”

Although she admits to being a quieter presence, DeArmitt has naturally stepped into a leadership role, inspired by upperclassmen before her and eager to set an example for younger players in the Labrae community. Off the field, DeArmitt enjoys English and history classes and is contemplating a future as a teacher. With interests in both softball and volleyball—she plays both at high levels—she’s still weighing which sport she might pursue in college. For now, with a district championship on the line and an entire community behind her, DeArmitt remains focused on the game. “I’m just kind of proud to play sports here. We have great programs, great coaches, and it’s been really fun playing for us,” she said. As LaBrae chases more wins, one thing’s for sure: Leah DeArmitt’s poised leadership and highlight-worthy plays are helping to put Levittsburg softball on the map.

BREAKING IN LIKE BARRESS

JEFFERSON OH — Few freshmen make their mark on varsity sports quite like Alaina Barress has this softball season. Sitting down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig, Barress spoke about her stellar debut and the determination that’s powered her through adversity.

Coming off a significant injury that sidelined her for six months, Barress credits her rigorous offseason work for her immediate impact. “I’ve worked really hard in the offseason…showing up in the open gyms, and I think it’s showing,” Barress said. Transitioning from middle school to high school is no small leap, but Barress has handled it with poise both on the field and in the classroom, juggling honors courses alongside a demanding athletic schedule. Time management and using school hours wisely have been key. “I try to keep up with my grades… and if I do have homework, I just get it done that night so I’m not running behind,” she explained.

Barress also praised her teammates and coaches for creating a welcoming, team-first environment. Senior standouts like Allie Hill and Marilia have been role models, while her coaches and family—especially her father, who doubles as her coach—have provided continuous support. Despite the hectic spring weather and frequent schedule changes, Barress keeps her competitive edge with pre-game rituals and a tight-knit team dynamic. “I always have to have two French braids…and flip my batting gloves three times before I step in the box,” she shared. As she nears the end of a memorable freshman campaign, Barress is already looking to inspire the next wave of underclassmen. Her advice: “Look up to the older girls and put the work in, because it will really pay off during the season.” With young stars like Alaina Barress, the future of Jefferson softball looks bright.

NO SLEEP, JUST WINS IN BROOKLYN

GIRARD, OH — Brooklyn Broll may only be a sophomore, but she’s quickly established herself as one of the key players on the Girard High School softball team. In a recent interview on the YSN podcast, Broll sat down with host Anthony Hartwig to discuss her journey so far, the team’s promising young roster, and what it takes to be both a leader and a standout performer at such a young age.

Since stepping up as a dominant pitcher in her freshman year, Broll has continued to grow, now sharing pitching duties with teammate Chloe Plant. “It’s been nice. Not all the pressure is on me,” Broll explained, praising Plant’s abilities and the relief that comes from sharing innings in the circle. Known for her composure, Broll shared her pre-pitching ritual: “I always take a minute and just relax myself and take a few deep breaths.” She named her changeup as her favorite pitch, noting its effectiveness when it’s on point. Working closely with pitching and hitting coach Bob Smith has also paid dividends. “He’s helped me so much with my mechanics and mentally, too,” she said.

Offensively, Broll’s bat is just as hot as her pitching. She’s currently leading the team with a .471 average and sits second in RBIs. She attributes her success at the plate to consistent work on mechanics and a stronger mental approach this season. Despite her youth, Broll has embraced a leadership role on the team. “Even though I’m only a sophomore, I hope people look up to me. I just want to be a leader and show a good example,” she said, describing herself as both determined and dedicated—qualities she credits to her family, especially her supportive parents and sister, as well as her faith.

Balancing academics and athletics hasn’t been a challenge for Broll, who says her favorite subject is history while biology has proven the most demanding. Teachers Dr. Duchy and Mr. Johnson have been particularly influential in her high school career, she noted. As Girard faces a tough schedule and weather-related interruptions, Broll and her teammates stay engaged by keeping spirits high, often filling rain delays with music and dance in the dugout. “We’re always having a good time keeping up the energy for the game,” she shared with a smile. With two seasons still ahead and a strong core of young players, both Broll and the Girard softball program look poised for a bright future.
