LEAVE IT TO CLEEVELY

CANFIELD OH- Maddy Cleevely has amazing volleyball in her blood line. With an older sister already putting in a great career at Youngstown State University, Cleevely has had a front row seat for what it takes to be great on the floor.  She has taken every lesson learned from the role models that she has been put in front of and taken it with stride.  Coming back to the program after not playing for a year has been a blessing for Maddy.  She terribly missed being on the floor a season ago.  Now she brings her skills as a hitter into the fold. Don’t get it wrong, Cleevely can swing it. She’ll prove just how valuable she is every time the Cards step on the floor.

Maddy was kind enough to come on to YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her senior campaign.  She talks with Anthony Hartwig and Richie Juliano about learning from her sister, transitioning into an outside hitter, and so much more. KINKADE KEEPS IT COMING

CANFIELD OH- The Canfield Cardinals knew coming in to the 2022 season they would have to revamp their offense. It’s a good thing that they brought back their setter. Riley Kinkade knows what it takes to win at this level of volleyball. With new faces needing to step up in bigger roles, they can rest assured Kinkade will get them in the right spot.

The position of setter can be overlooked at times. Sets aren’t flashy, they don’t end points, and assists don’t show up first in the stat sheet. But in all reality, setters are the reason an offense works. They are your quarterbacks on the court, and Riley is one of the best in town.  Kinkade has sights set on 1,000 career assists this season. As the games go on she gets ever closer. Talking to her fellow seniors, they are all hoping they are the ones that finish her 1000th assist.  Their commitment to get her to that milestone is the biggest example of what kind of leader Riley is, and what she means to the players around her.

Riley was able to join YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her senior season.  She talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Richie Juliano about what it means to have this last season with her fellow seniors, setting up this offense, and much more.  Don’t miss the latest Canfield Volleyball Player Profile only on YSN.

POLAR BEARS PUT THE FREEZE ON BOARDMAN

BOARDMAN OH-

Boardman (1-2) fell behind early and was unable to rebound dropping a 43-14 decision to the Jackson Polar Bears (2-1) on Friday night.

The Polar Bears would score on its opening possession and then score two more times following Spartan turnovers to take a 19-0 lead 7 minutes into the first quarter.  The Spartans would respond, however, with a nice drive and to yard touchdown run by Tomas Andujar to cut the lead to 19-7.

Unfortunately, that was not enough for Boardman as Jackson went on to score the next 24 points before the Spartans were able to respond with a Willy Torres five yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give Boardman 14 for the day.

Defensively, Tequan Bailey recorded his first career interception picking on a pass in the fourth quarter for Boardman.

The Spartans will look to rebound next week with a trip to Howland Friday September 9th.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7 PM.

EAGLES LATE GAME GAMBLE REWARDED

GARRETTSVILLE OH-  Like everyone expected, Warren JFK and Garfield found themselves in a back and forth affair. But no one could have guessed the dramatic way it would end. With just over 1 minute remaining in the game, and JFK trailing 21-14, Caleb Hadley capped off an impressive drive with a three yard touchdown pass to Ambrose Hoso. This set the score at 21-20, and set the stage for an extremely dramatic ending. Rather than going for the tie, JFK elected to go for the lead with a two point conversion.  Hadley hit Thomas Valent on a jump pass to complete the conversion, and give the Eagles a 22-21 win.

Antonio Smith was a big reason why the Eagles won. He gained 134 years on 16 rushes and scored once. Hoso caught a pair of touchdowns through the air.
