LADY FALCONS START STRONG

The Austintown Fitch girls basketball team got their season started with a win Friday night to open the Lakeside tournament. The Falcons beat Cleveland  Glenville 59-34.

Fitch dominated the whole game opening with a massive 18-1 lead after one quarter.

Daria Williams led the Falcons with 15 points. Shana Steirs-Royal was also in double figures with 10.

The Falcons will play in the tournament championship Saturday afternoon at 4:00 against Madison at Lakeside High School.

A SECOND HALF COMEBACK LIFTS THE FALCONS

YOUNGSTOWN, OH-Football is a 48-minute long game. What happens in the first 24 matters little if you can’t perform in the final 24 minutes. Cardinal Mooney fell victim to this as the Fitch Falcons made fantastic adjustments to win 27-14.

The first half was largely dominated by the Cardinals. Walter Sweeney, in his fourth career start at QB, along with sophomore running back Zyere Rodgers marched down the field on their first two offensive possessions. Sweeney was the first to find the endzone, a 15 yard scamper that put the Cardinals up 7-0. Later in the second quarter, running back Dom Byrd had a 3 yard plunge to extend the lead before halftime to 14-0.

But the second half adjustments from the Falcons were superb. Devin Sherwood, the sophomore QB, used his legs as well as his arm to get the Falcons back into the game. After a muffed punt, Sherwood took little time to run in a touchdown for the Falcons first score of the game. Fitch’s defense put the clamps on the Mooney offense, forcing punt after punt. Sherwood would find Todd Simons for 2 more touchdowns, one at the end of the third and another in the first 2 minutes of the fourth quarter. Then, while trying to run off the clock, Sherwood broke free again for a 38 yard touchdown run.

Despite a third-quarter interception from Jack McGlone, Mooney simply could not match the second-half scoring run put on by the Falcons. Mooney falls to 4-6, Fitch playing the playoff spoiler and keeping Mooney from reaching week 11.

SIMONS SHATTERS RECORDS; FITCH FLIES OVER SPARTANS

BOARDMAN, OH- It may be an understatement to talk about the Austintown Fitch’s excitement to have Junior Todd Simons back in the lineup.  After a tough loss last week to McDowell, the Falcons came out to face their rival Boardman- and showed no mercy.

The Falcon football team found their way back in the win column in dominating fashion.  For the 4th year in a row, the Falcons beat rival Boardman 40-14 Friday night.  The Falcons set the tone in the first quarter on their second drive when sophomore quarterback Devin Sherwood hooked up with junior receiver Todd Simons for a 99-yard touchdown pass, which is the longest touchdown pass in Fitch history.  Sherwood broke his own single-game passing record he set last week, throwing 20 for 23, 381 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Sherwood also rushed 11 times for 79 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Simons broke the single-game receiving yards record finishing the night with  7 receptions for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns and added an interception.  Sophomore running back Tyree Mitchell added a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.  He finished the night with 10 carries and 55 yards.  Senior quarterback Allison Edwards added on to the Falcons victory with a 2-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter.

The Falcons look to finish the season off strong when they head to Stambaugh Stadium next Friday night against Cardinal Mooney.

FALCONS FIGHT BACK; LAST PLAY GETS AWAY

AUSTINTOWN, OH – On a night where Erie McDowell, a perennial Pennsylvania powerhouse, was supposed to punch the clock on a business trip to the Valley, the Austintown Fitch Falcons gave them a tour of what “Grit City” is all about.

Coach Elliot’s squad trailed 31-13 in the third quarter before the Falcons clawed their way back in it and eventually took the lead with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter 35-31. But in the end, it was the Trojan offense that proved to be too much for the Falcons as they marched down the field, 65 yards, to take the go-ahead touchdown with 16 seconds remaining, 38-35. Even then, Fitch was able to muster a dramatic drive to end it, as Devin Sherwood heaved up a prayer with no time remaining from thirty yards out, on a ball that was batted around and was eventually called incomplete in the back of the end zone by the back judge, who claimed it hit the ground.

Austintown was led through the air by Devin Sherwood with 17 completions on 27 attempts for 325 yards and 5 touchdowns. Austintown was led on the ground by Devin Sherwood with 18 carries for 48 yards. Austintown’s top receivers were Nate Leskovac with 6 reception for 86 yards, Jaden Murray with 2 receptions for 79 yards and 2 touchdowns, Donnie Ellis with 2 receptions for 70 yards, and Todd Sims 3 receptions for 56 yards and 2 touchdowns. Fitch was led on defense by Nate Leskovac and Shawn Mayes with 7.5 tackles each, Chris Scott with 5.5 tackles, Christian Armstrong with 4.5 tackles, Neshawn Cochrane with 4 tackles, and Joe Perez with 3 tackles.

Fitch now begins preparation for their week nine matchup against the Boardman Spartans at Spartan Stadium. Spartans will be heading into week nine coming off a 34-19 victory over the Ursuline Irish.

Raiders Clip Falcons

WARREN, OHIO – The Austintown Fitch Falcons came into the game 3-0, knowing the next four games of the season was going to be a gauntlet. On the other sideline was a team looking to even their record at 2-2, in the Warren G. Harding Raiders. It was a defensive struggle through the first half until late in the second quarter when Harding quarterback Elijah Taylor found Ty Artis on a 22 yard fade for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead at half.

Fitch came out in the second half looking to find their rhythm but were stymied at every turn. Harding’s Noah Murray tacked on a 35 yard field goal in the third quarter to put the Raiders ahead 10-0. Fitch’s offense was held scoreless until late in the fourth quarter when Devin Sherwood found Chris Evans on a 32 yard completion to the Harding one yard line.
