GARFIELD KEEPS UP THEIR PACE

GARRETTSVILLE OH-

Going into Tuesday night, The Liberty Lady Leopards volleyball team were a team dubbed “The Cardiac Cats” for the amount of 5-set matches they have competed in this year. Traveling to Garfield, The Leopards looked to avenge a straight set loss to The Lady G-Men earlier this month.

Coming off their fifth straight win, Garrettsville Garfield looked to extend their streak against a Liberty team that had just won back-to-back matches. Set 1 contained some back and forth in the beginning with the set drawing even at 4 points a piece early on. However, Garfield used a combined team effort with the addition of great serving to propel themselves past The Leopards and get the Set 1 victory.

The Lady G-Men had no lapse in momentum from Set 1 to Set 2, as they opened up on a 7-0 run to take a commanding early advantage. It would happen to be a lead in which Garfield would never look back, as they captured a 17 point set win, firmly placing themselves ahead two sets to none.

Garrettsville, again, would jump ahead early on Liberty the following set. With the combination of team defense fueling the offense, Garfield learned a lot about holding momentum throughout a match. As they would get the win in Set 3 and ultimately the match in straight sets against The Leopards. Liberty (8-7) will now look to host LaBrae (9-5) on Thursday, September 29th. Also on that day, Garfield (12-4) will do battle on the road against Newton Falls (3-11) in a couple of conference matchups.

ROCKETS LAUNCH STALLED BY GARFIELD

GARRETTSVILLE OH- In a renewed rivalry from the old Portage Trail Conference (PTC) days, The Streetsboro Lady Rockets met The Garretsville Garfield Lady G-Men on the volleyball court, Saturday morning, for the first time since 2014!

Since that time, Streetsboro had stayed in The PTC, when it added The Metro Division. Nowadays it is now being called The Metro Athletic Conference (MAC). Garretsville, ended up joining The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference’s (MVAC) Gray Tier in 2021.

At the start, The Rockets jumped ahead early on Garfield and maintained their lead over The Lady G-Men throughout Set 1.  Garrettsville attempted a comeback several times, but some key serving and hitting errors put The Lady G-Men behind the eight ball. Unable to overcome the mistakes, Streetsboro capitalized and took a 1-0 set lead, with The Rockets winning by 8 points.

Set 2 was a back-and-forth battle from the jump. With the urgency from Garfield trying to avoid falling behind in sets 0-2. On the other side, Streetsboro was trying to ride a wave of momentum to take a commanding set lead on the road. Working on a short staff, Garfield’s Lily Shay and Mandy Cardinal stepped up big time in the middle, while Montana McGranahan was a smooth operator on the outside. A combined team effort willed Garrettsville to a 4 point set victory to draw the match even 1-1.

Momentum being as powerful as it is in sports, was harnessed and used in the coming sets for The Lady G-Men. Streetsboro had the hustle and heart on the defensive side of the ball, with nothing coming easy for Garfield. However, some mistakes behind the service line derailed The Lady Rockets, allowing Garrettsville to win the following two sets in convincing fashion. After drawing even

The loss will now set Streetsboro (10-10) up with a matchup against conference rival Ravenna (1-12) on Tuesday, September 27th. While the win for Garrettsville Garfield (11-4) will keep the home to host “The Cardiac Cats” in The Liberty Leopards (7-6) also on Tuesday.

GARFIELD KEEPS PACE IN THE MVAC

WARREN OH-

Following back-to-back losses to Crestview and a heartbreaker to Berkshire, The Garrettsville Garfield Lady G-Men have now won 9 of their last 10 sets, all of which have come in their conference. There is no doubt that as long as The Crestview Lady Rebels are in The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference’s (MVAC) Gray Tier, they will be the team to beat.

However, The Lady G-Men are the same team that came in second place last year with a chance at first. This season is much of the same, with Garfield’s hopes of a conference championship still alive. Speaking of champions, Garretsville had to make the conference trip out to Warren, Ohio on Thursday to face The Flashes.

The previous meeting between Garfield and Champion went to The Lady G-Men, but not without a tough fight from The Flashes. However, this time around Garfield made very few mistakes throughout the night. With an incredible team hitting percentage of .576, Garfield left little on the table in way of offense. Taking Set 1 by a convincing 9 points, Garretsville set the tone early on.

Despite the scrappiness and fight The Flashes brought, The Lady G-Men took the succeeding two sets by 5 points in Set 2 and 6 points in Set 3 respectively. Madeline Shirkey, coming off her 1500th career assist, added 30 more in Garfield’s straight set win over Champion.

Champion (6-8), looking to get back on their feet, will face off with Waterloo (3-8) when they travel to Atwater on Monday, September 26th. Garrettsville (10-4) will now entertain Streetsboro (6-9) on Saturday, September 24th when they welcome in The Rockets!

WATERLOO PUTS A HURT ON GARFIELD

GARRETTSVILLE OH- Waterloo traveled to Garrettsville Wednesday night and battled through adversity to come out on top 3-1.

The Vikings got goals from Kaira English, Olivia Boyle, and a huge game-clinching goal from Carletta Henry. The defense worked very hard the entire game, and behind Grace Yarian’s 4 saves they were able to slow the Garfield attack. Registering assists for the Vikings were Kaira English, Olivia Boyle, and a crucial clutch assist from Sophia Wood.

The Vikings worked hard for the victory and continue their run of good play. The team is next in action Monday at home vs Newton Falls at 5:30 pm. Please come out and support the team as they continue their chase.

GARFIELD WINS ON MILESTONE FILLED NIGHT

GARRETTSVILLE OH-

A conference battle took place in Garrettsville on Tuesday night. The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference’s (MVAC) Gray Tier had two of its best setters on full display! With Carla Ramirez Ortiz of Campbell grabbing her 1000th career assist in just her junior season. On the other side of the fence, Madeline Shirkey tallied her 1500th career assist at Garfield in her senior campaign. As both milestones highlighted the night, the teams lit up the court with some competitive play!m

Set 1 saw The Lady G-Men maintain at least a three point advantage throughout a majority of the set. Montana McGranahan set the tone against the Red Devils once again, earning 16 Kills in her last outing against Campbell on August 25th, the junior was dialed in against The Devils. However, Campbell rallied late trailing 24-17, with Angeliz Diaz behind the service line The Red Devils trimmed the score to 24-22 before falling to Garfield.

Campbell carried their momentum into Set 2, with The Red Devils holding a lead early on. Garfield battled back midway through the set, evening the score 11-11 before eventually grabbing the advantage. Looking back at the previous set, it was a score so nice they did it twice, with The Lady G-Men taking the three point set victory to take a 2-0 set lead.

Learning from the previous set, The Red Devils snatched the lead behind phenomenal play out of the middle from junior Kendall Brunn. Campbell held the lead from the first serve of Set 3, to even leading Monsters, Inc. style 23-19. But the resilience of Garfield shined once again, continuing to battle back, they traded points with The Red Devils but were backed against a wall. Campbell was in front 24-21, before a perfect 5 point run by The Lady G-Men put the cherry on top of a straight set victory to go 8-1 in the conference on the season.

The Red Devils (6-7) will look to turn their luck around in The MVAC, where they will host LaBrae (8-4) on Thursday, September 22nd. Garfield (9-4) makes a trip to Champion (6-7) also on Thursday.

SURELY SHIRKEY IS READY FOR EVERYTHING

GARRETTSVILLE OH- Volleyball coaches will tell you how important setters are to their programs, even if the stat sheet won’t. Every time you see stats presented after a volleyball match, kills are the first thing everyone sees. They don’t think about the girl who has to set it up. Madeline Shirkey is a senior setter for Garfield, and boy does she ever set up the Lady G-Men offense.  She has put in all her time to build her bond and trust with the hitters on the offense. Some of them are fairly new faces, some of them returning veterans. No matter which option, Shirkey does a fantastic job knowing exactly where each hitter needs set to succeed. It’s one of the reasons that Garfield’s offense is so well balanced. The Lady G-Men have four players with 30 or more kills.  Shirkey herself is prone to attack totaling in 17 kills so far. As far as assists go, Shirkey has put together 177 already this season.

Shirkey was kind enough to give up some of her time to come on to YSN’s Running Point this week to share a little bit about her career. She talks with Anthony Hartwig and Richie Juliano about her goals this season, what makes her team so close, and much more. Gear up with Garfield and check out the latest G-Men Volleyball Player Profile only on YSN.

GARRETTSVILLE OH-

In what was the fifth conference battle of the year Tuesday night for The Garrettsville Garfield Lady G-Men. This time, it was The Newton Falls Lady Tigers coming to town for their first matchup of the season.

A competitive first set saw plenty of back and forth, starting out with Garfield grabbing an early advantage. However, like many Newton Falls teams of the past, they come prepared and ready to fight. A resilient Garfield team was able to withstand the comeback effort in Set 1, emerging victorious in a 4 point win.

By Set 2, Garrettsville looked to repeat their start from the previous set, and did so in another emphatic way. Grabbing another early lead and protecting it through several comeback efforts from Newton Falls, allowing Garfield to grab a crucial set lead on The Tigers 2-0.

Set 3 was a change of pace, as Newton Falls refused to fall in straight sets, flipping the script by grabbing an early, commanding advantage on The Lady G-Men in Set 3. Garrettsville attempted to draw the game back to even, but The Tigers capitalized on the errors in the set and eventually came away with the win 25-17.

Their first set loss against a conference opponent this season woke up The Lady G-Men, as they played with a new level of focus and were incredibly sharp in Set 4.
