BRENNER’S COMPLETE GAME ENDS PIRATES SEASON
RAVENNA, OH-Cardinal Mooney scrapped their way to a narrow 4-3 win against Southeast on Monday, clinging onto a lead they built up in a hectic fifth inning.
It all went down in the fifth when Mooney’s lineup sparked to life. Kaden Reese worked a walk that brought in a run, and then a couple of Southeast errors let another three runs slip through, putting Mooney up by four.
Despite the lead, it wasn’t smooth sailing. Southeast bit back with a double and smart base running that chipped away at the lead.
On the mound, Jonathan Brenner was solid for Mooney, tossing seven innings of three-run ball, striking out nine while wrestling with his control at times to hand out four walks. Nate Muncy shouldered the loss for Southeast after giving up four runs through four and a third innings, though only one of those runs was earned thanks to his defense letting him down.
At the dish, Reese, Brenner, and Gabe Saunders managed a hit apiece to contribute to Mooney’s cause. Southeast spread their hits across the team with Logan Lavigna and Zach Keto not just hitting safely but also knocking in runs to keep things interesting.
The game was a gritty showcase of high school baseball where Mooney just managed to hold off Southeast’s late surge to advance to the Sectional Semi-Finals on Wednesday against United. The game will be broadcast on YSN at 5pm.
