GARFIELD BASEBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MICHAEL PAES

GARRETTSVILLE OH-  The Garrettsville Garfield G-Men have made quite the first impression as a school on YSN. With the football team making a deep run, including an undefeated regular season, and the girls basketball team continuing their culture of success.  As we await the start of the baseball and softball season, a lot of those same athletes featured in other sports, will, once again be featured on the diamond.   Aside from this being the first year with YSN, it is also Garretsville’s first year in The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC).

Being a part of The Gray Division in The MVAC, Garfield will do battle with the likes of Liberty, Champion and LaBrae to name a few conference opponents.   Head Coach Michael Paes is excited for the competition level that has been raised in conference play; however, Garfield still features old rivalries on their schedule, such as Ravenna Southeast and Mogadore.

You cannot miss this Coaches Corner, as Ty and Anthony wish a warm welcome to The Garrettsville Garfield G-Men Baseball Team!

GARFIELD REPEATS AS DISTRICT CHAMPIONS

This season, Garfield and Champion are even more familiar with each other. As new league rivals the G-Men and Flashes have played twice already this year. They split their regular season meetings, with both games going down to the wire. Garfield took control of this one pretty quick however, and cruised to a 68-51 victory.

Jenna Smith led her team in her final district championship of her career. She scored 19 points. Madeline Shirley was also in double figures for Garfield scoring 13. Sarah Seaman was right behind her with 12. Sydney Seaman rounded out Garfield’s double digit scorers with 11.

GARFIELD FOCUSED ON REPEATING AS DISTRICT CHAMPS

CORTLAND OH- Garfield walked away as district champions last season with their win over Champion. It earned them a trip to Cuyahoga Falls for the regionals. However, a taste of regionals makes you hungry for more. Now, Garfield finds themselves one win away from another championship. They beat Berkshire in the district semifinals Wednesday 59-33.

It was a pretty competitive first frame with Garfield leading 16-13 after 1. However, over the next two quarters the G-Men outscored Berkshire 29-14 to pull away.

Jenna Smith was unstoppable. She finished with 28 points, which helped her eclipse 1600 career points. Smith completed a double double as well with 14 rebounds. Sarah Seaman broke her own three point in a season record with perimeter shot number 62. She finished with 18 points.

Garfield advances to the district championship on Saturday where they’ll meet a familiar foe in Champion. Not only have these two teams already met twice this season, but this will be the third year in a row they meet in the final. That game is scheduled to tip at 7:00 on Saturday at Lakeview.

STILL JENNA FROM THE BLOCK

GARRETTSVILLE OH- Take a trip to Garrettsville to watch Garfield’s girls basketball team and you’ll be in for a treat. The Lady G-Men have plenty of ways they can beat you. However most of the time, their offense flows through Jenna Smith. She can dominate the paint, and she can make lethal moves from the high post as well.

Jenna got her 1000th career point as a Junior last season, that in itself is an accomplishment. She continued to lead her team statistically this season and now, she is a member of the 1,500 point club. It is much more exclusive up there.

Jenna shows incredible leadership on the team. She is a big reason Garfield  is able to work as such a tight unit. She had plenty of leaders in the past show her the way to lead the younger kids now. Because of the work she has put in, Garfield has a great mix of experience, and youth. Because Jenna, and her fellow seniors are such good leaders, everyone on the team carries confidence into every situation that they come across.

Jenna took the time to join YSN’s Running appoint this week to talk about her senior year. She also talks about reaching 1,500 points, her basketball journey, and much more.

GARFIELD EARNS GILBERT HIS 250TH CAREER WIN

COLUMBIANA OH- The MVAC Gray Tier has been nothing short of a gauntlet on both the boys and girls sides this season.

On the girls side, it was a matchup between The Garrettsville Garfield Lady G-Men making the trip down to Crestview to do battle with The Lady Rebels.

The first half proved to be a low scoring, scrappy and defensive battle! With both teams jockeying for position on one another in the first sixteen minutes.

Crestview, coming into this season, has a lot of young talent on the roster. Including two freshmen that got the start in Saturday’s contest.

One of those freshmen being the young star in Luvrain Gaskins, who dropped 14 points in the first half!

Gaskins’ big first helped The Lady Rebels draw even with The Lady G-Men going into halftime 19-19.

However, the talks with Coach Gilbert fired up Garrettsville out of the half. Garfield out scored Crestview 21-7 in the third quarter alone to take a 40-26 with just the fourth quarter remaining.

The story of the second half? Jenna Smith playing takeover ball for The Lady G-Men! With 18 points in the second half and 26 on the day.

Sarah Seaman knocked four triples down as a part of a 14 point performance on Saturday.

But it was Smith, accounting for almost half of her team’s offense, that named her The Player of The Game! The Lady G-Men kept that momentum rolling, taking that third quarter lead and never looking back, as Garrestville won 55-40 over Crestview.

Winning both times over The Lady Rebels, the win marks career win number 250 for Garfield Head Coach Aaron Gilbert, with over 200 of those victories coming at Garrettsville.

Crestview (9-9) will look to bounce back against Hubbard (8-8) and The Lady Eagles on Thursday, February 10th.

Coach Gilbert will waste little time trying to get win 251, as Garrettsville (13-6) will travel to conference opponent Brookfield (12-4) for a conference matchup on Monday, February 7th.

SEAMAN TOPS GARFIELD SHOOTING RECORDS

GARRETTSVILLE OH- Sarah Seaman has been doing her thing in Garfield for the last four season. She has quickly become one of the best shooters in the YSN family, and statistically the best three point shooter in Garfield history. Earlier this season Seaman broke the record for most threes in a career. The mark was 169, she’s got that and counting.

Sarah hasn’t just a good shooter, she is a fantastic leader. Her example and work ethic has been crucial to Garfield’s success this season. Garfield has 4 losses this season where they’ve had leads in the fourth quarter. That kind of heartbreak is enough to break a team. But not Garfield, not with a leader like Sarah Seaman. Her, and her fellow seniors have refused to let those losses define the Lady G-Meh season. They’ve been dominant in the league this week to get their team back on track, and get their record back to above .500.

Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell had the opportunity to talk to Sarah on Running Point after her record breaking performance. She talks about what goals lay ahead for her and her team, her basketball journey, and much more. Don’t miss this exclusive interview with Garfield’s brand new three point queen Sarah Seaman.
