SHRUM IS THE WORD

WARREN OH- Some say he is as cool as ice, others say he can get as hot as a torch. One thing is for sure, he is undoubtedly one of the captains for this year’s Warren JFK baseball squad.  We are, of course, talking about pitcher and shortstop for The Eagles, Gavin Shrum.  Having pitched in the state championship game and coming out on the winning end, Shrum has the makeup it needs to lead a team through the roller coaster ride of a season.

Debuting for the first time on Running Point, Anthony and Ty have a fantastic conversation with The JFK senior and Malone commit.  Looking to make another magical run on his way out, Shrum looks to lead The Eagles as they soar to new heights!

NOTHING BUT A G THING

WARREN, OH- If you’ve seen a roster for Warren JFK sports over the last few years, you’ve undoubtedly seen the unmistakable name of “Gavin Shrum” associated with the team in some capacity.  A name that’s so unique, yet only begins to represent the young man who represents it.

Gavin has been a marquee piece to championship glory over the past few years on the football field, but certainly his contributions on the diamond last spring helped Warren JFK to the 2021 State Championship.  He’s the perfect embodiment of Warren JFK in that the only size that matters is that of the heart and soul.  Shrum makes the most of every ounce of weight, and every meter of his height to stand tall amongst the crowded baseball scene.

The recruitment process was no different.  In a challenging scene of backlogs due to COVID-19, Shrum was sold on the idea of playing hardball after graduation, and started making plans, and making contacts.

Earlier this week, Gavin made things official when he announced he’d be continuing his academic and athletic careers semi-close to home at Malone.

We caught up with Shrum following his announcement to discuss the process that went along with the commitment.

SHRUMBODY SPECIAL

WARREN, OH- “How cool is it that Warren JFK got to the state title game in baseball too?”

That was the question floating around the greater Youngstown area on Saturday night.  However, for at least one young man, getting to the game just wasn’t enough.

For Junior, Gavin Shrum, he needed more.  For his teammates, for his school, for his family, and for himself.  Just months after falling in the state championship contest in football, Shrum had promised himself that if he ever had another chance at the “gold trophy” he wouldn’t let the opportunity slip away if he had anything to do with it.  So in a bit warmer climate of sunny Akron, Ohio, the young pitcher would be handed the ball for a chance to etch his, and his teammates’ names in the record books at John F. Kennedy Catholic School forever.

Many looked at the situation and said “it was a great run” and “who would have thought 11 boys could make it this far?”

Shrum saw a chance to avenge a loss that still haunted him.  He saw a chance to prove that a team needs 9 to play in baseball, and the grit, skill, and determination would handle the rest.

Simply put, Shrum saw his moment- and he owned it.

We caught up with the state champ to discuss what things were like leading up to the game, as well as the moments after, and MUCH more.  Enjoy this week’s Warren JFK Player Profile: Shrumbody Special.
