GIRARD PUTS THEIR FOOT DOWN

GIRARD, Ohio –

Stephen Sims accounted for 368 total yards and five touchdowns as the Girard Indians (6-2) dominated the Hubbard Eagles (5-3) in a 42-14 routing at Arrowhead. Michael Palmer added a touchdown himself and over 100 total yards of offense.

Girard used their speed to score touchdowns on four of their first five possessions. While Hubbard was blanked in the first half, they found early success on the offense side to open the second with back-to-back scoring drives, but couldn’t find a solution to the Indians offense, who would score on all three of their second half possessions.

SIMS STOCK

After senior quarterback Nic Bengala went down with an injury, the Girard Indians were faced with a question of how sophomore Stephen Sims would be able step in and lead the Indians offense.

After struggling last week against the Poland Bulldogs, Sims’ statement night has put to rest any questions surrounding the electric dual-threat signal caller. Sims completed passes at a 61% clip for 164 yards and a score while gashing the Hubbard defense with his legs on 10 carries for 185 yards and 3 touchdowns, adding in an 11-yardtouchdown reception to cap it all off.

BIG PERFORMERS

GIRARD: (13 penalties, 115 yards)

Stephen Sims: 368 total yards, 3 rushing TDs, 1 passing TD, 1 receiving TD

Michael Palmer: 14 carries, 93 yards, 1 catch, 15yards, 1 rushing TD

Anthony Bengala: 3 catches, 53 yards

HUBBARD: (3 penalties, 25 yards)

Nik Hendrix: 65 passing yards, 1 INT, 2 total TDs

Ben Wilcox: 20 carries, 92 yards

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS

GIRARD:

With their commanding victory over the Hubbard Eagles, Girard has at least clinched a spot in the postseason and are almost a lock for a home playoff game.

HUBBARD:

Still without a victory over a team with a winning record, the Eagles have left themselves with work to do over the closing weeks of the season. Coach Hoffman’s squad needed a victory over Girard and one other in the next two weeks to have a legitimate chance at securing a home playoff game, now the birds will be fighting to even secure their spot in the dance.

UP NEXT

Girard: After bouncing back in a huge way against the Eagles, Girard will hit this coming Friday to take on the surging Struthers Wildcats (4-4). After dropping four in a row, the Cats have rallied off three straight wins over Lakeview, Jefferson, and Niles.

Hubbard: Looking to remain perfect at home and secure a spot in the playoffs, the Hubbard Eagles will play host to the Niles Red Dragons (2-6) Friday the 14th. During Coach Hoffman’s tenure as the Eagles head coach, Hubbard holds an unblemished 14-0 record against Niles.

POLAND SILENCES THE DOUBTERS

POLAND OH- Poland has had a roller coaster of a season to say the least. They’ve had plenty of tough opponents on their schedule, and so far they’ve been hit or miss.  On Friday night against 5-1 Girard, it was all hit for the Bulldogs. They got a huge win over the Indians 21-19.

Girard tried to set the tone early with their ground game. They drove the ball well, and got on the board first with a 7-0 lead.  Poland would respond with a ground attack of their own. Danny Nitolli punched one in from 2 yards out to tie things up 7-7.  Both defenses were up for the task the rest of the first half.

Girard would find a opening to take back the lead in the third with a touchdown run from Michael Palmer. Palmer finished the game with 150 yards on 24 runs. After a fourth quarter stop on 4th down, Girard would add a field goal to go up 17-7.

Poland needed an explosive play, and fast. Enter Cole Fulton, he caught a screen pass and ran the ball 75 yards down the sideline for the quick strike offense.  Then, the Bulldogs recovered an onside kick to get the ball back. Nitolli would then run in another touchdown to give Poland their first lead 21-17.  Girard would add a safety, but couldn’t come up with a last game winning play.

Poland will continue NE8 play next week as they return to the road to travel to Lakeview.  Girard returns home in Week 8 to host Hubbard.

POLAND KEEPS INDIANS QUIET

POLAND OH- Poland got another NE8 victory on Thursday night as they continue to fight for a conference championship. They steamrolled Girard 5-0.

Poland will return to action on Tuesday as they have a big rematch with Hubbard at home this time around. JV will kickoff at 5:00 and the varsity will follow.

GIRARD PUTS DOWN FITCH IN STRAIGHT SETS

GIRARD OH- It was a marquee matchup on Monday night in the volleyball scene as Girard and Fitch faced off in a non conference match. With Girard being ranked 6 in the YSN Power Rankings, and Fitch ranked 3rd, it was a showdown for the ages. However, Girard made sure that the excitement was short lived. They dominated their way to a sweep of the Falcons to send a message to the rest of the teams in the area. (25-18 25-14 25-22)

Bree Latell had one of the best nights of her career. Not only did she lead Girard in kills with 16, she also finished with no errors.  Lauren Pallone finished with 13 kills on the night for the Indians, while Ezra Dede added 5.  Ali Durkin finished the night with 29 assists setting up Girard’s offense.  The Indians serve was trouble all night. They finished with 11 aces as a team.  Bailey Walters led them with 4.  As far as the defense goes, Walters led Girard with 11. Latell gathered 8 on the night.

Fitch was led by Jocelyn Jourdan who finished with 13 kills. Kylie Folkwein contributed 8 kills for the Falcons.  Rylie Simons set up 27 assists on the night to keep the Falcons offense running.  She led the defense as well, completing a double double with 10 digs.

Girard will stay home on Tuesday as they return to league play hosting Poland.  Fitch will look ahead to a big second matchup with Canfield at home on Thursday.

RAIDERS TAKE A VICTORY LAP IN ARROWHEAD

GIRARD, OH- As we narrow down to the last few weeks of the regular season, the matchups of the unbeatens become vital games to win and watch. On Friday, South Range traveled to Girard to see who would walk out still undefeated. With the Raiders being the powerhouse of the conference and the Idians pursuing their crown, defense and even special teams need to be a big factor to secure the victory for either team. Luckily for South Range, their defense and special teams unit came ready to show the Indians who is the true unbeaten team in the NE8. Thanks to the stifling defense, special teams, and the explosion on offense, South Range was able to walk away with a demanding 56-12 victory over Girard.

The first score for the Raiders to set the tone was from Shane Lindstrom who took a 58-yard punt to the house. Shortly after, the Raiders offense went back to work with Billy Skripac at the forefront. Skripac put up 186 yards passing with 2 TDs on just 5 completions. On the receiving end of those two touchdown passes were Jake Starkey who came up with a 70-yard TD, and Ayden Leon who caught the other for 56 yards. Skripac and the Raiders were not only successful in the air, they put up 212 total rushing yards with 5 TDs coming from five different players. For Girard with Nic Bengala unable to finish out the rest of the second half, their offense put up 283 total yards which mostly came in the first half. Bengala finished with: 13/19 for 194 yards and a TD. South Range kept them from obtaining more in the second half and ultimately forced Girards offense to put up their lowest amount of points all season.

Girard will move to 5-1 on the season going into week 7 as they will travel to Poland on Friday. South Range moves to 6-0 and will be back home to host Niles Friday night.

GIRARD BRINGS BULLDOGS DOWN TO EARTH

CORTLAND, OH- Girard keeps it rolling and stays unbeaten as they shut out their NE8 foe, Lakeview on Friday night, 49-0. From start to finish, the Indians were all over the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball. At the end of the first, Girard led 21-0 thanks to scores on their first two possessions and a 72-yard TD pass from Nic Bengala to Stephen Sims.

The Idians then unloaded on the Bulldogs in the rest of the first half with the help of back-to-back interceptions from Bobby Alejars who took it 35 yards to the house and Domenico Simone who made an unbelievable grab to set Girard up to score again to make it 35-0. As it came close to halftime, Lakeview hurt themselves again with a fumble which led to Bengala finding the endzone again to make it 42-0 at half. Girard would put up one more TD in the second half to finish off the game.
