BRUNGARD REACHES 1000 IN TIGERS VICTORY

GIRARD OH- Springfield came into Tuesday night’s matchup with Girard carrying a perfect record, and a brand new MVAC crown. This game was going to test them against a higher division school, and act as a measuring stick for the Tigers going forward into the tournaments. They measured up pretty well. The Tigers rolled to a 61-35 win over Girard.

Springfield had 3 players in double figures to lead their offense. Adam Wharry put together a spectacular 24 point performance. Jake Joyce continues his positive impact on the offense with 14 points. Beau Brungard was able to add 1000 career points to his athletic resume. He only needed 2 points coming into the night, and he got into double figures with 10.

Gus Johnson put in 16 points for the Indians. Thomas Cardiero contributed 7 points to the cause.

Springfield has another non conference test on Friday as they hit the road to LaBrae to take on the Vikings.

SEYHAN HAS HER DAY IN THE SUN

GIRARD OH- Seyhan Dede has been a name Girard fans have been hearing non stop for the last four seasons. And for good reason, she excels in each of the four sports she plays in. Dede is a member of the volleyball team, basketball team, softball team, and track team. She has found a way to lead her teams this season as a senior each in different ways.

As Dede ventures into the final games of her basketball season at Girard, the part she reflects the most foundry about is the opportunity to bond and grow relationships with her fellow teammates. Whether it be team dinners, postgame hangouts, or holiday parties Seyhan relishes in the opportunity to spend time with the players she works hard with.

Dede is a big reason why Girard is so competitive on the hardwood this season. Her lead by example attitude has made it easy for the entire team to go full force no matter who they are playing. Girard’s girls team can be described mostly by their hustle and refusal to quit on plays. Seyhan embodies that attitude. She will be the first to dive on the floor for a loose ball. It’s little things like that that younger players see and imitate on the floor.

Seyhan took the time to come on YSN’s Running Point this week to discuss her senior season. She talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about her favorite memories with the team, her ability to be a multiple sport athlete, and the people that have supported her along the way. Don’t miss this Girard player profile “Seyhan Has Her Day In The Sun”

GIRARD’S STRONG DEFENSE LEADS TO VICTORY

HUBBARD, Ohio –

Since 2006, the Hubbard Eagles (2-16) and Girard Indians (10-6) have matched up a total of twenty-one times, with Girard holding the series edge 11-10. While Hubbard dominated the early series matchups, Girard has since won nine of the last eleven.

Throughout those twenty-one faceoffs, five saw the game end within a single possession, and the early part of the ballgame looked like these two NE8 foes were heading down that road again. A back-and-forth first quarter of play ended with the Eagles ahead 15-13. Unfortunately for Hubbard, that fifteen-point effort was the highest point total they’d produce in a single quarter, while Girard was just getting started.

Dominating both on the glass and defensively, Girard heavily outrebounded Hubbard. Crashing the boards offensively provided the Indians with plenty of easy looks from the inside, while their rebounding efforts on the opposite end helped hold Hubbard to just five second quarter points.

Coming out of the break trailing by five, the Hubbard Eagles needed their senior star, Riley Heckert, to produce. Heckert would do so early, knocking down an opener jumper to draw Hubbard within just one, and adding on a pullup jumper late from around the elbow to leave the blue and white trailing by just three with a quarter to go.

Much as they have all season, Hubbard staggered throughout the final stanza. Turnovers and poor defense led to easy Girard looks for the Indians to put the game out of reach. Gus Johnson and Bobby Alejears would lead the way for Girard in the fourth, combining for twelve of the Indians sixteen points to give the Indians the win, 48-36.

HUBBARD:

Riley Heckert 17 points

Brody Snyder11 points

GIRARD:

Gus Johnson – 14 points

Bobby Alejears – 9 points

Thomas Cardiero – 8 points

Hubbard Falling to 2-9 in the conference, the Eagles will regroup and look to complete the season sweep of the South Range Raiders (4-13). Both teams will head into the matchup off of a loss.

Girard Securing a double-digit win total for the first time since the 2018-2019 season, the Girard Indians will head into Friday nights home matchup against the Poland Bulldogs (12-5), looking for revenge. These two programs last faced off January 7th in a game that the Bulldogs would win 63-53.
