LEOPARDS SERVE UP SEASON OPENING SWEEP

LIBERTY OH- It was time to get volleyball started in Liberty on Monday night. The experienced Leopard team matched their talents with Youngstown East in a backyard brawl. It was Liberty that proved too much for the Bears as they swept their way to victory (25-7 25-13 25-6)

It was at the service line that the Leopards did the most damage. They served up 27 aces as a team. Mia Parker finished with 8 by herself. As for the offense, Lexi Muck led the Leopards with 8 kills. Demi Watson finished with 5.

Liberty will start league play on Tuesday as they travel to Crestview.  East hits the road again on Wednesday as they travel to East Palestine.

HUBBARD HAILS SUPREME

HUBBARD, Ohio –

For the first time since Youngstown East stole Hubbard’s perfect regular season on the last play of the game in week 10 of 2018, the Eagles and Golden Bears faced off on opening weekend of the 2022 high school football season.

Looking to replace their all-state running back from last year, T.C. Caffey, the Eagles started off the night with three different running backs who would find the endzone. Ben Wilcox, a familiar name to the Eagle backfield, would be the first to reach paydirt. Just over two minutes into the first quarter, Wilcox would take a handoff fifty yards to the house for the opening score of the 2022 season.

Next for the Eagles offense, it was Royal McConahy finding the endzone on another long Hubbard run, this one from fifty-three yards out in the closing seconds of the first quarter. Ahead 14-0, it was time for the third Eagle to score. Xzander Owens would put Hubbard ahead buy three scores with his twenty-five-yard touchdown scamper; the two-point conversion was failed.

All Hubbard to start this matchup, the Golden Bears showed signs of life, almost dominating the rest of the second quarter. Starting their drive from their own thirty-five-yard line, after a couple solid runs from Andrew Blackmon and a sloth of Golden Bear backs, East was into Hubbard territory. Blackmon would then find a wide-open Thomas Nickerson in the middle of the field, who would take the pass into the endzone for the score. Blackmon went on to punch in the two-point conversion to draw East within twelve.

Following the Bears score, a plethora of solid defense and sloppy offense ensued. Hubbard would have the ball in East territory multiple times, even starting a drive on the Golden Bearseleven-yard-line but could not muster a score. The drought would succumb however when Ben Wilcox would find the endzone with eight minutes remaining in the ballgame. Wilcox’s second touchdown of the night came from twelve yards out, on fourth down. The Eagles would run the exact same play they scored the touchdown with when going for two and would convert, bringing the score to where it would finish, 28-8.

A RIVALRY RENEWED

YOUNGSTOWN OH- On Monday, both the Youngstown East Golden Bears and Chaney Cowboys had their Community Pride Picnic, getting ready for the big rivalry, the Youngstown City Classic that has been one of the biggest rivalries in NorthEast Ohio and since the 1920s.

The Rivalry came to a halt in 1998 when East closed their doors before reopening as the Panthers in 2007. Since 2007, The now Golden Bears (formally known as the Panthers) swept the Cowboys with the last game before the emergence of Chaney athletics was 22-20. After the 2010 football season, it was announced that Chaney would drop athletics to become a Performance Art high school. However, YSU hall of fame inductee and coach Rick Shepas at the time brought the program back as their Athletic Director during their comeback. The first game back was technically in 2018 during a Saturday Morning Junior Varsity game, a preview for the future at the time.

Both teams have been known as well to have talented players who have made it to the league and were college stars. For Chaney, you had Frank Sinkwich, Matt Cavanaugh who won three Super Bowls who won a National title with the Pittsburgh Panthers, Brad Smith, an All-State quarterback who broke the record for the Missouri Tigers where he passed for 2,000 yards and rushed for 1,000 yards. He would then play for the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets and Buffalo Bills.

For the Golden Bears, one of their star players who made it pro was the late James Snowden Jr who played offensive tackle for the Washington Football Team (Redskins) from 1965 to 1971. John “Tony” Copeland, a safety and running back who made the All-City-Team and played for the Dallas Cowboys. Robert Green who rushed for 1,300 yards in 1961 and played for the Youngstown Hardhats and Nicholas Latessa who was a member of the 1949 City Series Championship team under coach Dick Barrett.

This Friday, Head Coach Chris Amill will battle his former assistant in Mark Assion. Amill, was an assistant under PJ Fecko and Mooney for 15 seasons while Assion led Jackson Milton to back to back playoffs appearances from 2015 to 2016. Amill will look to improve the Cowboys to four and five this week while coach Assion looks to grab his second victory as East’s head coach.

Series since 2019: Chaney 27 East 0
2020: 22-2

YSN’s Ian O’Brien caught up with a few players from East to talk about what this game means and the experience it brings. Both teams will meet in a Grit City Classic this Friday at 7pm!!

URSULINE DOMINATES GRIT CITY BATTLE

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Rayen Stadium was founded in 1924. It was the spot for the Rayen Tigers until their closure in 2005 as the last game was against Akron East. In 2012, a remergence came in the stadium and it’s been home to the East Golden Bears ever since. The first ever game back that year was against the Ursuline Irish who were led by Chris Durkin at quarterback with the Irish winning 41-24. Fast forward to 2021 and Dan Reardon’s Irish (4-3) we’re looking to get the ball rolling again after two straight losses to Akron St Vincent St Marys and Villa Angela St Joseph as they faced off against the East Golden Bears and new head coach Mark Assion.

Some storylines that were looked at during pregame was quarterback and UCF baseball commit Brady Shannon who was only 50 yards away from becoming Ursulines all time leading passer, passing Daryll Clark II who after graduating Ursuline, became a star quarterback for the Penn State Nittany Lions from 2005 to 2009.

The Game
With the Golden Bears first drive being a turnover on downs, the Irish immediately went down the field when Shannon found Marc Manning for a 25-yard touchdown making it 7-0. He was only now 13 yards away.

The Irish then blocked an Alex Biering punt while Shannon and DeMarcus McElroy would get a pair of touchdowns making it 21-0. Shannon would also break the record around this time, officially becoming Ursulines all time leading passer with 4,732 yards now in his career. Ursuline continued to score with McElroy making it 42-0 at the end of the half. The Irish would then make history on the special teams side once again as senior kicker Kayelyn Crofford became the second female kicker in Ursuline history to score a point on the football team (first was Taylor Tomlinson in 2019).

Freshman Jy’Quise Liason also got a touchdown, his first as an Ursuline Irish later in the game from a yard out.

The Golden Bears would score once after a big 43-yard pass by Luther Bell to Nick Grier. Bell, who replaced quarterback Andrew Blackmon in the second half, took it in from a yard out but it was too little too late as Ursuline, bounced back in a big way after two losses winning against the Golden Bears 48-6.

Stats
Brady Shannon: 5-11 for 91 yards and a touchdown. Seven carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Marc Manning: one reception for 25 yards and a touchdown.

Jy’Quise Liason: one carry, one yard and one touchdown

DeMarcus McElroy: six carries for 40 yards and three touchdowns.

Andrew Blackmon: five carries for 21 yards, one of eight for 17 yards passing

Luther Bell: one of two for 43 yards passing, one rushing touchdown with three carries for 13 yards.

Up Next:
Ursuline (5-3, 2-0 in SVC) plays a familiar foe in new territory as its the Holy War against Cardinal Mooney (1-8, 0-2 in SVC) at Mineral Ridge Saturday October 23rd at 7pm. The first time these two teams have played outside of Stambaugh Stadium in decades.

East (1-6, 0-2 in SVC) plays their big rival Chaney
Cowboys (3-5, 1-1 in SVC) in the City classic Battle of Youngstown. Kickoff is Friday October 22nd at 7pm!!
