URSULINE SENDS BEARS TO HIBERNATION

YOUNGSTOWN OH-  Nothing makes a great senior night for players than a home win, and tonight, that’s what the Irish did as they hosted the Youngstown East Golden Bears at Stambaugh Stadium.

Just like the last two games, the Irish got off to a quick start.  The first score of the game was in the first quarter when Brady Shannon pitched it out to Trenton Hill, who then found Matthew Reardon 32-yards out making it 7-0 Irish.  Later on, it was Shannon, finding Dean Boyd who ran 38-yards out making the score 13-0 after a missed two-point conversion.  East had a rough start but was sure to have Ursuline muff their upcoming punt.  Unfortunately, the snap went over the punters head which led to it being a safety.  The score was now 15-0 at the end of one.

The second quarter had less scoring for the Irish as the East defense did make a few stops there.  However, the Irish would find that momentum again as Demarcus McElroy plowed in six yards out.  Later on, Shannon found Boyd again 14-yards out.  At the half, it was now 28-0 and East needed to change something up for the third quarter.

Well, the change did not work as planned.  Ursuline still kept playing fast and would not look back.  The third quarter momentum started when Terrell “TG” Dillworth channeled his inner Joshua Cribbs and Devin Hester, taking it 80-yards to the house.  Ursuline’s final touchdown came later when Hill put it in a yard out.

East got their only point late in the game when Andrew Blackmon found Rueben Talley for an 18-yard touchdown.  In the end however, the Irish took revenge for their 28-27 2OT loss to East last year and this time won with the final being 42-7.

Brady Shannon finished 10 of 15 for 144 yards and two touchdowns.  Trenton Hill finished with 10 carries for 45 yards with a rushing and passing touchdown.  Matthew Reardon has three receptions for 44-yards and a touchdown.  Dean Boyd finished with three receptions for 99-yards and two touchdowns.

Defensive Standouts for the Irish were Ryan Peguese who had two sacks, Boyd, and Dante Walker who were the leading tacklers.

Ursuline (3-1) will head to Mollenkopf Stadium for a big game against the Warren G. Harding Raiders (1-3).  Youngstown East (0-4) will look to get their first win next week as they face the Howland Tigers (1-3).

GOLDEN BEARS KNOCK OUT GIRARD

GIRARD OH- The East Golden Bears went in to Girard and upset the Indians 58-49 Tuesday night.

The Bears outscored the Indians 13-4 in the opening quarter to grab quick momentum to start the game. The closest the Indians could get was three as the final frame ticked on. Off a perimeter shot from Thomas Cardiero, it appeared Girard might be able to pull off a win. The Golden Bears responded with a rally in the final minutes to seal their win.

Girard finishes the season at 9-15.

RIVALRY RENEWED; ‘BOYS WIN OVER BEARS

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- Rayen Stadium was packed for the renewal of an intense rivalry after being dormant for 9 plus years. The Cowboys beat the Golden Bears 27-0. Penalties had a huge impact on this ball game and the Cowboys benefited from a lot of those.

The Cowboys got on the scoreboard with 6:58 left in the 1st quarter Junior Quarterback Delshawn Petrosky took a run-pass option right up the middle for a 25-yard touchdown run dragging a couple of Golden Bears into the end zone with him to make the score 6-0. The Golden Bears took the kickoff and proceeded to commit 3 penalties before they took a snap on the series and were backed up to their two-yard line. When they finally got a snap off the Bears quarterback, Senior Isiah McBride could not handle a low snap and the ball went out of the back of the end zone for a safety for the Cowboys to make the score 8-0 with 5:51 left in the first quarter. After East kicked the ball back to the Cowboys on the free-kick, The Cowboys took advantage and Senior Key Shaun Davis ran up the middle untouched for a yard touchdown run to make the score 15-0.

The second quarter started fast as on the first play of the 2nd quarter Petrosky scampered 20 yards for his second touchdown of the game to make the score 27-0 in the 2nd half. At the end of the half, the Cowboys had a huge advantage in total yards 198 to 27 total yards for East. The flags flew 14 times on the Golden Bears in the first half 14 times for 177 penalty yards. The officials in the middle of the 2nd quarter got both head coaches Chris Amill and Brian Marrow together with the captains to try and calm down the players as the game really had a lot of after the play personal fouls up until that point.

The teams calmed down after the half and really struggled to move the ball. Both defenses really played well in the 3rd quarter and the Bears hurt themselves still with a lot of penalties and keeping them from really gaining any footing offensively.

The scoring was rounded out by Senior, Marshall Herron with 4:28 left in the ball game took the ball from the 25-yard line and broke tackles at the line of scrimmage to find a hole down the middle for a tuff touchdown run to make it a 27-0 score.

Chaney ended the game with the total yard advantage 308 total yards to 27 total yards for the Golden Bears. The Cowboys held the Bears to a total of 10 yards rushing compared to gaining 242 yards on the ground themselves. The Bears penalties were a big reason why they couldn’t really get going as they were flagged 21 times for 177 total penalty yards. Both teams season end, as they both knew the playoffs would not be possible going into the game. Chaney finishes their first year of football in 9 years at 6-4. The Golden Bears of East finish their season at 4-6.

RISE IN THE EAST, EP SWEEPS LADY BEARS

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- You know it’s tournament time when teams start locking in their focus, and for East Palestine- they tuned up the band on Tuesday in a 25-16, 25-8, 25-5 fashion over the East Golden Bears.

Leading the way for EP was Junior, Emily Berger with 17 points, 15 kills, 3 aces, and 3 digs.  Morgan Cheurco had 30 assists, 2 points, and 4 digs while Jade McBride had 11 points, 3 digs, and an ace.  Sophomore standout Paige Snyder had 6 points, 4 aces and 11 kills for the Lady Bulldogs.

East Palestine now improves to 14-7 (9-3) and the Bulldogs will now turn their attention to another Youngstown City School when Chaney comes to town on Thursday for EP’s Senior Night.

GROUND GAME CARRIES THE CARDINALS TO VICTORY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Mooney Cardinals started off their five game home stand against in city rival, the East Golden Bears. A surprise team from last year, the Bears had a 7-3 record and made the playoffs. Both teams entered the game with a record of 3-2, looking to see who truly was the best in Y-town.

Each teams first possession ended with a touchdown, and all of the yardage coming on the ground. Junior QB for the Cardinals, Pat Guerrieri scored from 11 yards out to put Mooney of the board first, but the Bears would answer right back with a touchdown of their own, a 36 yard scamper by Maleek McIntosh. The extra point though would be blocked, and a fast moving first quarter would end 7-6 in favor of Mooney.

Once the second quarter started though, Mooney would take complete control. A huge run of 43 yards by Jeremy Thornton put the Cardinals inside the 5 yard line of East, and Guerrieri would punch it in himself. Guerrieri would also tack on a touchdown pass when he hit Michael Scavina for a 24 touchdown. Guerrieri would finish with 86 yards passing, along with 72 on the ground and 3 total touchdowns.

But it was that ground game from Mooney that became the story. The combination of Zyere Rodgers, Dom Byrd, and Jeremy Thornton was simply too much for the Bears defense. After Bears’ QB Isiah McBride was picked off by Walter Sweeney, the sophomore sensation Rodgers hit the hole and took off for a 13 yard touchdown run. Dom Byrd would find the endzone as well in the fourth quarter, and Mooney’s defense shined as well, forcing two turnovers and holding the Bears to 4/15 on third down. The Cardinals rushed for over 350 yards en route to a win, 38-13.

GAME OF INCHES, URSULINE FALLS SHORT AGAINST EAST

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Ursuline Fighting Irish traveled a few blocks down the street to Rayen Stadium to face the Youngstown East Golden Bears. The Golden Bears entered the contest looking to avenge their loss the week prior to the Niles McKinley Red Dragons. As for Ursuline, they were in search of their first win of the season.

Ursuline controlled the momentum in the first half, scoring the only 14 points of the half. The first touchdown came on third and long, as Daivon Jones made an 87-yard house call to put Ursuline up. The second score came off a perfect over-the-shoulder pass by Brady Shannon to Julian Johnson.

The second half was a Golden Bear affair. Eddie Bryant would go 56 yards to the end zone to put the Golden Bears on the board early in the third quarter. With several Ursuline miscues and missed opportunities, the Golden Bears found the end zone late in ten fourth to tie the game. Both teams took their shot at the win, but overtime was needed.

Both Ursuline and the Golden Bears would score in ten first overtime. The Golden Bears would punch the ball in yet again in double overtime. Ursuline took the field, and Shannon found Matthew Reardon in the end zone for a diving catch. Ursuline went for the win, and on a trick play, Reardon found James Phillips uncovered in the end zone; however, he was unable to keep himself inbounds.

Ursuline would fall 28-27 to the Golden Bears in a game for the ages. The Golden Bear faithful celebrated the hard-fought victory, while Ursuline’s followers were forced to wait another week.

Ursuline’s next test will take place at Mollenkopf Stadium in Warren, Ohio, as they face a longtime rival, the Warren G. Harding Raiders.
