A CHAMPION LEADS THROUGH ADVERSITY

WARREN OH- Coming in to the 2022-2023 season there were high expectations set on the Champion girls basketball team. Not only do the Flashes girls programs just naturally have a winning mentality, but returning so much talent from last season made the Flashes optimistic.  But sports is not scripted, and you can’t always write your own happy ending. Before they could blink the Flashes were dealing with a flood of injuries. At one time 5 players in the varsity rotation were unavailable.  Champion didn’t lay down though. They turned to one of the best athletes that walks through the halls of the school, junior Bella Meyer.  Meyer may not have imagined having to Will her team forward and lead a bunch of players who were being thrown into the varsity waters, but that didn’t stop her. How does she handle adversity? She smacks it right in the mouth.  Bella has been playing on another level trying to carry her teammates across the finish line.  If you really want to see how a player can change a program just watch Meyer work, especially during the first half of the season.

While looking at Meyer’s numbers remember that she spent most of the season getting the complete attention of opposing team’s defenses.  Meyer has still been able to average 20.2 points per game, and 7.7 rebounds per game.    She has made 61 three pointers this season and shoots 34% from behind the arc.  She also doesn’t do too bad on defense, Meyer has 79 steals to this point averaging 4.4 per contest.

Bella took the time to sit down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig and talk about what this season has been like.  They discuss playing through the team’s injuries, balancing a future D1 career in softball with basketball, and much more.  Check out the latest Champion Girls Basketball Player Profile only on YSN!

GARFIELD MAKES ADJUSTMENTS AGAINST CHAMPION

WARREN OH- The first time Garfield and Champion met this season, the G-Men had to dodge a mighty upset bid.  Champion scored 19 points in the third and pushed Garfield to the edge, even though they won the game, the Flashes made them sweat it out.  On Monday when the two teams met again in Champion, Garfield would not let the team in purple gain momentum. They hit cruise control on their way to a 53-38 win.

Mandy Cardinal was the pace setter for Garfield with 15 points on the night. She wasn’t the only one that got in to double figures as Laura McCoy and Madeline Shirkey both scored 12.  Zoey May added 6 points to the Garfield offense.

Bella Meyer put together a great night as always for Champion. She finished with a game-high 17 points for the Flashes.  Kayla Haynie worked her way to 8 points while Addie Warzala finished with 7.

Garfield is still tied in first place at the top of the MVAC, and they’ll try to keep that up on Thursday as they host Liberty.  Champion will try to put it together on Thursday as they host Campbell.

CHAMPION FINDS ITS WAY BACK TO WINNING

LIBERTY OH- On January 17th the Champion Golden Flashes made their triumphant return to the win column after breaking a 32-game losing streak with a 48-47 road victory over the Liberty Leopards.

Champion got off to a great start in the third quarter after trailing by seven points at the half and took a slim four point lead into the fourth quarter. Liberty put up a valiant effort down three players, including leading scorer Evan Bates, as they put up 15 in the fourth quarter but wound up a point short after a late game decision to hold on to the ball for over a minute and try for the final shot. Julius Ferrell in his season debut for Liberty heaved up the final shot from the corner but couldn’t hit the target and Champion came away with their first win since December 10th of 2021 when they beat Pymatuning Valley on the road.

Player of the game went to Brett Chanell who finished the night with 12 points and a couple of three pointers that gave Champion enough momentum to take the night. Liberty was led in scoring by Kalen Turner who put up an outstanding 24 points and Silas Robinson who finished with 13.

Champion will try and make it two in a row as they will take on Newton Falls on Saturday in a road game. Liberty finally broke a winless month of January after beating Academy for Urban Scholars on Monday, but they found themselves back on the losing side Tuesday night. The Leopards will take on Crestview this Saturday on YSN at 7:00 p.m. ET as they will look to pick up win number four against the seven-win Rebels.

BROOKFIELD KEEPS PACE IN MVAC

BROOKFIELD OH- After Brookfield took their first league loss of the season it put a microscope on the rest of their league schedule. GARFIELD SURVIVES MIGHTY CHAMPION EFFORT

GARRETTSVILLE OH- You can never count out a Champion team, that is a lesson Garfield learned all too well on Thursday night. To say the start of the season has been bumpy for Champion would be an understatement. Plagued with injuries the Flashes have had to put players in to new situations with little to no experience.  They’ve taken their lumps, but a win on Thursday against an undefeated Garfield team could have sparked a huge turnaround. They got close. In the end it was the G-Men that showed grit and battled through Champion’s biggest punch to keep their perfect season alive 46-43.

Mandy Cardinal led the way for Garfiekd has she put in a big 16 points. Madeline Shirkey also got in to double figures on the night finishing with 13.  Laura McCoy finished with 5 points.

For Champion their efforts were led by Bella Meyer with a game-high 22 points. Kayla Haynie added one of the best games of her season getting in to double figures with 15 points.

Garfield escapes with the victory and moves on to travel to Liberty on Monday. Champion will stay on the road as they travel to Campbell.
