WILD FINISH GOES CHAMPION’S WAY

WARREN OH- On Friday night, rivals took to the field to start out MVAC Gray Tier play and they left everything out there. Newton Falls came into Champion and went blow for blow against their rival after a little bit of bad blood was left on the field last season. Newton Falls was playing with their backup quarterback in Sophomore Keegan Murray, and he played very well with Alex Pennington out.

Our game got started with Champion receiving the football and coming out on their opening drive with a 55-yard rushing touchdown from the raining MVAC player of the week Nick Vesey. On the first play from scrimmage for the Tigers their running back responded with a 50+ yard run to set them up at the one-yard line and Keegan Murray took the QB sneak in to tie the game up. Once more Champion would get the ball and immediately gave it to Vesey and he would thank them for and take the ball on another 50+ yard run that would set Champion up at the ten-yard line. Vesey would grab the ball again and take in a 10-yard touchdown run and Champion would jump back out in front 14-7.

Newton Falls would then get the ball on their own 35 andwould fumble the football on the 39 a few plays later. Champion would take it 37 yards down to the one and fumbled on the one and it was recovered by the Tigers defense. The very next play from the one Camryn Brainard would have put together the play of the season as he would line up in the wildcat and run the ball off to the left side of his O-line and nearly fumbled in the endzone after slipping a tackle but recovered and broke off another would-be tackle for a 99=yard touchdown run to tie the game.

This would all happen in the first seven minutes of the first quarter. No touchdowns would be added until the fourth quarter. A safety came off a high snap over the Tigers punters head and out of the back of the endzone to put Champion up 16-14 early in the second quarter. With two minutes to go in the third quarter Jason Sipka would come out and drill a 34-yard field goal to put the Tigers out in front for their first lead of the night.

In the fourth quarter, the Golden Flashes would go on a long drive with a lot of penalties that ended in a Joey Fell 15-yard touchdown run to put the flashes up 22-17 as they would fail to convert on the two-point conversion. The Tigers would fumble on their next drive and Champion would take over on the Tigers side of the 50 and would drive it down and Nick Vesey took in a 6-yard rushing touchdown and Champion would go up 29-17 and the game looked all but over.

Newton Falls would receive the kickoff and go on a long drive that ended inside the redzone as they would turn the ball over on downs and Champion looked like they had just won the game with this defensive stop with two-minutes to go. But Champion would get the ball and fumble the first play, they recovered but had to burn a timeout to address the error. This allowed the Tigers who had just two timeouts at this point tostop the ball after every play and Champion would end up failing a would-be game winning fourth down conversion so the Tigers would get the ball back. One play later and Keegan Murray would go deep to Nick Wright for a 29-yard passing touchdown to make it a one score game with 39 seconds to go. The game came down to an onside kick that Champion would recover, and they came away with a close victory in what was an epic heart-stopping battle between rivals.

This game lived up to the billing as Champion would win the night 29-24 over Newton Falls. Champion picked up their first home win of the season on Military and First Responder Appreciation night. The Golden Flashes move to (2-2) on the season and will head on the road next week to take on the LaBrae Vikings. Newton Falls drops their third straight game as they are now (1-4). The Tigers will come home for next weeks matchup against a tough Garfield G-Men squad.

JFK LOOKS TO KEEP BUILDING

WARREN OH- Warren JFK didn’t have to travel far in Week 1 as they opened with an up and coming Champion program. The Eagles didn’t make life easy for the Flashes, as they rolled to a 44-14 win.

A pick six from freshman Devonte Taylor in the first couple minutes of the game set the tone for JFK.  Caleb Hadley would build off that momentum tossing a pair of touchdowns in the first half. He hit Aidan Rossi for a big 60 yard strike, and he also found Thomas Valent for a 19 yard touchdown.  He’d hit Rossi again later in the game for a 54 yard score.  Braylin Dyson would add to the JFK offensive barrage with a 45 yard touchdown run.

Joey Fell finished the night for Champion with 71 passing yards, and 90 rush yards.

JFK will travel to Fulton County in Week 2 to take on Delta.  Champion will try and bounce back against Rootstown at home.

HEART OF A CHAMPION

WARREN OH- For most ten year old girls, the worries that go through their head are minimal. It’s a stage in life where the innocence of childhood thrives.  For Skylar Scarnecchia, those blessings weren’t part of the plan. At the age of ten, already an athlete in the purest sense, Skylar felt pain in the bottom of her foot that wouldn’t go away. What doctors thought for sure would be a benign tumor turned out to be stage four cancer. Hearing that word at the age of ten was a gut punch, not just for Skylar, but her entire family. It was a moment that caused instant tears, but also instant support. Skylar says the family immediately embraced in hugs to go along with the tears. The best way to describe that they were together and the fight would not be battled alone.

After time and treatment it became apparent that the best option for Skylar to beat the cancer in her foot was to amputate her leg.  For a little girl who loves sports, the idea of losing a leg, and presumably her ability to compete had to be the worst case scenario.  However the reaction that Skylar had shocked the doctors, as her response was “I guess I won’t have to cut my toe nails anymore.” That tone would set Skylar’s path of a positive mindset that would make her journey something she could get through.

Skylar got her prosthetic leg and found her way back to competition.  Local girls basketball fans can probably recognize her from being a part of Champion girls basketball team. Now, she has found a new endeavor as she has moved into the world of wheelchair basketball. She has played for the Cleveland Cavaliers NWBA affiliate, she also plays in Pittsburgh for the Steelwheelers. She says initially she turned away from the opportunity to play wheelchair basketball. Her ability to still run, and jump made it sound silly to go into a wheelchair.  After taking advice around her she has embraced the opportunity and it didn’t take long for her to fall in love with the environment the sport has to offer.

You can catch Skylar still playing wheelchair basketball, and on the golf course as she continues to compete. Skylar also has started to share her story with local elementary students to inspire young children around the valley.  She is an advocate for people with any kind of disability they may be forced to face in their life.

Skylar was kind enough to come on YSN’s Running Point to tell her story. She talks with Anthony Hartwig and Ty Bartell about how she was able to stay positive, where she finds inspiration, and so much more. This is a special story that everyone should hear, and we are proud to feature it on YSN.

HOLT WILL CONTINUE AT NOTRE DAME COLLEGE

WARREN OH- Champion High School, a school whose name is perfectly fitting to describe the success The Flashes have experienced in recent years.  That is thanks, in large part, to the incredibly talented players that have come up through the program.

Flashes senior Nate Holt is another prime example of just that. Putting in the work at a young age, dreaming of one day donning The Champion Uniforms. Well that first day has come and passed, as Nate has become the ones those same kids look up to.  Breaking the news that he will be continuing his baseball career at Notre Dame College, inspiring many other youth baseball players to “dare to dream.”
