NOTHING STOPPING CHAMPION FROM PUNCHING THEIR TICKET

CORTLAND OH- Champion continues to find themselves in the district championship game. This program keeps rolling and succeeding. Kirtland tried to stand in their way on Wednesday, but nothing was going to stop the Flashes from punching their ticket to another title game. Champion earned the 47-37 win.

Two seasons ago, Champion won the district championship, last year they fell to Garfield. This year they’ll try to get revenge on the. G-Men.

Champion was led by both Ava Howell, and Lorinda Dodrill who each scored 14. Carlie Easterday chipped in an important 8 points.

Champion advances to the Lakeview district championship where they’ll play conference foe Garfield. The two teams split two meetings this season, both winning at home. Tip is set for 7:00 at Lakeview High School.

HOWELL DOES SHE DO IT

WARREN OH- The standard of excellence in Champion’s girls athletics has always been apparent. Their players ability to continually get players that understand the standard and work hard to keep it up. No one wants to be the class to lower the bar for the Golden Flashes.  Ava Howell is just another example of how hard work and determination keeps the tradition alive at Champion.

Ava goes into her senior season as an important leader for this successful Golden Flashes team. Champion coming off a district runner up season, returned a lot of key pieces, and knew their window was still open to have success in the tournaments. It would take a step up in leadership from Ava Howell, and her fellow seniors, and they have answered the call.

Ava took the time to come on YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her final season in the purple and gold. She talks to Ty Bartell, and Anthony Hartwig about being a leader, her favorite memories in the program, and much more. Keep up with Champion in the latest girls basketball player profile exclusively on YSN.

SPRINGFIELD DIMS DOWN THE FLASHES

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Springfield and Champion were matched up in a massive showdown on the pitch Monday night. Both teams were riding very successful seasons. The Tigers however, took down the Flashes 3-1 in what turned out to be a match that lived up to the billing.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the locker room. The first goal of the night was scored by Ava Vecchione. Then with about 23 minutes to go in the half, Gracie Venturella put one in. Champion came out of the break and cut the lead in half with a goal from Taylor Huhn. However, Gracie Venturella struck again with what turned out to be the game sealing goal, and her second of the night.

Springfield will hit the road and travel to Newton Falls on Wednesday. Champion will travel to Badger on Thursday.

LEOPARDS COMPLETE GAME WINNING DRIVE

LIBERTY OH- The Leopards had just under four minutes to work with down the stretch on Friday night. Trailing Champion 24-20, the Leopards drove 70 yards and capped it off with a La’Breilyn Wilson four yard touchdown run. The Leopards would win 27-24.

Freshman quarterback DC Ferrell went 16/32 through the air with 205 yards, and a touchdown. He also ran for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns. Chris Cunningham got his second straight 100 yard receiving game, catching 9 passes for 129 yards.

The biggest highlight for Champion was their go ahead 65 yard touchdown pass from Joey Fell to Keegan McDermott. They trailed 13-0 at the the half before taking an 18-13 lead, and then a 24-19 lead.

Liberty will look to stretch their win streak to 3 in Week 8 as they travel to Newton Falls. Champion will host Campbell in Week 8. Both teams will be looking for their second win of the year.

POLAND CONTINUES WINNING WAYS

POLAND OH- After a tough start to the season, Poland has now rattled off three wins in a row with a sweep of Champion on Monday night. (25-7 25-9 25-13)

Morgan Kluchar led the attack on the night for the Bulldogs finishing with 8 kills. Sophia Dedo also had a strong offensive night finishing with 7 kills. Sarah Forsyth finished with 5 kills. Both Maddie Tonus, and Morgan Bailey both finished with 7 assists.

JFK DOESN’T MISS A BEAT

CHAMPION, OH – The Warren JFK Eagles came into Friday night’s game attempting to match the ferocity of last season’s reign. Many wondered how they would adapt to new kids stepping up on the turf to take the place of superstars like Hollobaugh and Likens from last year’s past team. Well with the likes of Brown, Mauro, and Rivera, I don’t believe they’ll need to worry too much. Champion put up a great fight all game, however the blue storm’s defense was simply too powerful. The Eagles took the game 48-6, and scored 27 points in the first half.

Antwan Brown of the Eagles had three rushing touchdowns, along with one kickoff return touchdown after Champion’s only score of the day. Brown was the lead rusher for the team, and made quite the debut for the team. Midway through the game, he suffered an ankle injury that seemed like he would be out for the majority of the game. He proceeded to come back on the field for the kickoff from Champion, where he clutched the ball from the air and took it about 75 yards to the house. After the touchdown, he seemed to tweet it once again, and that is where he called it quits for the rest of the game. Michael Mauro of the Eagles and Abram Rivera had scores of their own, Rivera scoring a 2 point conversion after a Brown rush in the end zone. Mauro in the first half picked off QB Joey Fell, which led to a Brown TD. On the other side of the ball, the Golden Flashes’ Mason Sabo was the only one with points on the board for the day. Champion tried their hardest to swing momentum back into the game, but it was too little too late.

Champion will be playing Rootstown next Friday, August 27, and Warren JFK will be home playing Western Reserve that same day.
