WARRIORS HISTORIC SEASON COMES TO END IN DISTRICTS

Peninsula, OH- In a hard-fought district semi-final matchup, the Edgewood Warriors faced off against the Aurora Greenmen in a game filled with anticipation and determination. Despite a strong effort from the Warriors, led by Katie McCollister’s double-digit scoring performance, they were unable to secure the victory, ultimately falling short with a final score of 29-39.

Despite the loss, the Warriors displayed resilience and determination throughout the game, showcasing the competitive spirit that defined their historic season. Led by Katie McCollister’s impressive scoring performance, the Warriors fought hard against a tough Greenmen squad.

However, the Greenmen proved to be a formidable opponent, particularly in the third quarter where they outscored the Warriors by 14 points. Despite the Warriors’ efforts to rally in the fourth quarter, they were unable to overcome the deficit, ultimately falling short in their quest for victory.

With this loss, the Edgewood Warriors conclude their season with a final record of 20-2, marking a historic season for the program. Despite the disappointment of the defeat, the Warriors can take pride in their accomplishments, including winning the first conference title in school history and achieving the most wins in school history.

As for the Aurora Greenmen, they advance to the district finals of the OHSAA playoffs, where they will face the Gilmour Academy Lancers. With their hard-fought victory over the Warriors, the Greenmen look to carry their momentum forward and continue their postseason journey.

Although the outcome may not have been what the Warriors had hoped for, they showcased determination and resilience throughout the game, leaving everything on the court in their pursuit of victory. As they reflect on their season, the Warriors will look to build upon their successes and lessons learned, setting the stage for future achievements on the basketball court.

FITCH’S STELLAR WEEK CONTINUES

Following back-to-back victories against All American Conference (AAC) opponent The Howland Tigers, The Austintown Fitch Falcons softball team was scheduled  for their first non-conference opponent. Their competition? The two-time regining and defending Suburban-American Conference champions, The Aurora Greenmen. Another premier pitching matchup was slated, as Greenmen had The Suburban-American Pitcher of The Year a season ago in McKennah Metzger. Of course, Fitch has The AAC Pitcher of The Year and YSN Player of The Year in Sydnie Watts in the circle. 

The first inning saw Austintown strike first when Ayla Ray opened the game with a single and later came home to score off of a Sydnie Watts RBI single. Great pitching ensued for the following innings, with Metzger retiring The Falcons on weak contact, while Watts struckout ten of the first eleven batters!  Fitch padded their lead in the third when the top of The Falcon order got ducks on the pond for the middle. McKenna Hogan brought home a run on a sacrifice fly, following that,  Kylie Folkwein brought home two additonal runs on a single which allowed Fitch to take a 4-0 lead. 

The score remained the same until the sixth, as both Metzger and Watts got into a groove! Aurora got some traffic on the basepaths in the top half of the sixth, which would be The Greenmen’s best opportunity to score at that point. Watts faned the two following batters to keep one of Portage County’s best teams scoreless through six innings. In the bottom half of the inning, The Ace of Bases, Ayla Ray hit a triple to the gap and scored off a throwing error to third, capturing an additional insurance run for The Falcons! Watts sent The Greenmen down in order in the top of the seventh and finished with 16 strikeouts in route to a 3-0 start for Fitch! 

Aurora (3-2) will be in-action next on Monday, April 3rd in a home matchup against conference-rival Tallmadge (2-1) as those two squads shared the conference a season ago. While Austintown-Fitch (3-0) will stay home and be right back on the field Friday, March 31st where they will host The Mentor Cardinals (0-0) for a 5:00 p.m. first pitch! CARDINALS SET UP BATTLE OF 224 DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

JEFFERSON OH- Canfield opened up the Jefferson district semifinals with a thrilling 2-1 win over Aurora to punch a ticket into the district championship game.

Jackie Kinnick was the hero at the plate going 1-2 with both Cardinals RBI.  Macy Kalina went 1-2 with a run scored.  Bridgett Kelly was perfect at the plate going 1-1 with a walk.

Malena Toth was the real star of the day. She kept the Lady Greenmen quiet all game holding them to just one run.  She struck out 13 and walked zero.

Canfield advances to the district championship game on Thursday night. They will have their third meeting with Poland of the season. So far the teams have split. First pitch from Jefferson is set for 5:00.

SPARTANS WALK OFF EARNS SATURDAY SPLIT

BOARDMAN OH- Boardman defeated Aurora 3-2 in Game 2 of a double header on Saturday thanks to a walk-off double. The game was tied at two with Boardman batting in the bottom of the eighth when Jenna Olexa doubled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Boardman Spartans Varsity pitchers struck out one, while Aurora sat down six.

Aurora evened things up at two in the top of the sixth inning.

Tori Strines led the Spartans to victory in the circle. The pitcher lasted seven innings, allowing nine hits and two runs while striking out one and walking zero. Madison Lester threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Lester recorded the last three outs to earn the save.

Olexa finished the day with 2 RBI on a 1-3 day. Maddie Wymer went 1-3 with a RBI as well.  Lester went 1-3 with a run scored.  Strines led Boardman with two hits in four at bats.

FALCONS COMPLETE INCREDIBLE COMEBACK TO EARN SPOT IN FINAL

SOLON OH- In a matchup of #4 seeded Austintown Fitch Lady Falcons and #6 seeded Aurora Lady Greenmen on Tuesday night.

Set 1 was a tight battle with both teams jockeying for position early on in the set. Fitch opened up with a 4-0 run, The Lady Greenmen responded with a 7-1 run of their own. All in just the opening minutes of set 1.
Austintown took a timeout trailing 13-8 in set 1, after Aurora was just as sharp on defense, much like the match with The Canfield Lady Cardinals on Saturday.

After another run by The Lady Greenmen, Fitch found themselves trailing 18-10 after taking their final timeout in the first set.

Ella Sahli and Erin Burke got fitch out of their funk, with an impressive string of serving, one that saw The Lady Falcons go on a scoring run, trimming Aurora’s lead down to just 3.
But the lead was too large in set 1, and The Lady Greenmen captured the first set 25-21.

Set 2 did not disappoint, as the competitiveness and fight of both teams remained in full force. Fitch jumped out to an early 6-4 lead on Aurora.
Those Lady Greenmen do not know how to quit, but they do know how to play defense. As on the backs of their defensive talent, Aurora tied the game up at 8 a piece.

Maria Parks of Aurora served up a lead for The Lady Greenmen 14-13, their first since leading 1-0 in Set 2.

After exchanging scores back and forth, Fitch was forced to take their first timeout of the set, down 16-18.

Out of the timeout, The Lady Greenmen extended their lead 21-16. Fitch battled, but Aurora’s defense held strong again. Winning set 2 by a score of 25-22.

The marathon did not stop in set 3. As both teams again exchanged scores, all the way to a 12-11 Fitch lead. After forcing an Aurora time out with the lead, Fitch scored three straight to make it a 15-11 lead.

Fitch kept up the same energy, including a key ace by Erin Burke, forcing Aurora to burn their final timeout, trailing 21-17.

The score was 24-19 Fitch, with Aurora having the serve, playing backs against the wall defense. But it was an uncommon error in the serve game of The Lady Greenmen that sealed the se 3 victory for Fitch 25-20.

Fitch held on to the momentum going into set 4. Taking a 6-2 lead on Aurora in the early stages. The Lady Greenmen stayed resilient, much like they had in the previous sets. Going on yet another run of their own, cutting The Falcon lead to just one 7-6.

As Coach Bartlett utilized her first timeout of the set, The Lady Falcons were able to battle through and keep their head above water. Maintaining their lead as the set moved into the later stages.

Some missed swings by Aurora, paired with Jocelyn Jourdan entering takeover mode, Fitch grabbed an impressive 18-11 lead. Forcing The Lady Greenmen to burn both timeouts in the set.

Jocelyn and The Lady Falcons did not take their foot off the gas. Winning the set emphatically 25-15. Setting up a pivotal set number 5, a set in which Fitch was undefeated in the season.
Set 5 opened up with a deafening roar from the crowd to start. As Aurora had the serve to start the race to 15.

Fitch jumped out to a 7-3 lead, forcing Coach Tyler Price of Aurora into a timeout. Fitch rode that momentum to a 13-6 lead in the set, thus leaving Aurora with no timeouts, after using the second.

The Queen Captains of Alyssa Leskovac and Jocelyn Jourdan from that point said, ballgame. Fitch won set 5 by a final of 15-8.

Jocelyn Jourdan broke another school record in as many tournament games. With an impressive 33 kills in the match! Including the one that sent Aurora home.

Fitch now have their sights set on Saturday, October 30th in a matchup with Chardon set to start at 1 p.m.

WEST BRANCH BREAKS THROUGH AURORA

JEFFERSON OH- West Branch lead the whole time on their way to an upset of the top seed in the Division II Jefferson bracket Aurora 5-3.

Jordan Anderson led things off in the circle for West Branch. The bulldog allowed five hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out nine and walking one.

Mackenzie Krafcik was in the circle for Aurora. Krafcik lasted three and a third innings, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out three and walking one. McKennah Metzger threw three and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen.

Aurora launched one home run on the day. Metzger went yard in the sixth inning.

Shannon Morris, Krafcik, Maggie McVicker, Maddie Zdanowicz, and Metzger all had one hit to lead Aurora.

The Warriors scattered eight hits in the game. Sydney Mercer and Jaci Thomas each had multiple hits.

SPARTANS SURVIVE AND ADVANCE

BOARDMAN OH- It took everything they had, but the Spartans came back from the brink to beat Aurora in five sets, and give head coach Alyssa Birch her first career tournament win.

Aurora came out swinging. They definitely looked better than a 20 seed. They won back to back tight sets using clutch serving, and a spread out attack. Boardman helped them out with a few errors here and there, but all in all it was a pretty clean two sets of volleyball. The Lady Greenmen were just getting the big plays.

Boardman seems to become a different team with their backs against the wall. After losing two sets to the score of 23-25, the Spartans came out with even more energy. They dominated sets three and four to force a decisive set five.

That set five was much like the first two sets, back and forth each team grabbing some momentum. Aurora jumped out to a 6-3 lead, to which the Spartans responded with a 7-0 run to go up 10-6. The Spartans then saw that lead dwindle as Aurora tied the set up at 10. Boardman had the last laugh as they finished off a nail biter 15-13 with a Maria Torres kill.

Boardman was led by Torres who had an impressive 18 kills. Katie Stamp added 16 kills to the Boardman attack. Kathryn O’Horo stepped into the libero position tonight and led the defense with 24 digs. Torres completed a double double with 15, Stamp did the same collecting 14 digs. Raegan Burkey ran the offense to perfection. She set up 44 assists on the night.

Boardman advances and will now travel to face 10 seeded Lakeside for the sectional championship on Thursday at 6:00.
