POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE

CANFIELD, OH- In a recent episode of the YSN podcast, host DJ Yokley sat down with Canfield High School’s football team senior sensation, MJ Pompoco, who shared his thoughts on the season, personal growth, and what it means to don the cardinal head and represent his community.

With a tumultuous season marked by challenges and significant growth, Pompoco emphasized the team’s resilience. “We’ve faced a lot of adversity, which has made us better. We’re confident as we head towards the playoffs,” Pompoco explained.

Despite initial low expectations following the departure of a strong senior class, Pompoco and his teammates have created their own set of standards. Their strong camaraderie and determination have been pivotal. “We really were able to come together and form a team bond that’s just helped us be better,” he noted.

Team leadership has been a major focus for Pompoco, who has recognized his ability to influence and energize those around him. “I learned that if I bring the energy, everyone else tends to follow,” said Pompoco.

Beyond the field, Pompoco shared his appreciation for the role he plays in upholding Canfield’s rich football legacy. His message to future players is to seize every opportunity they have left. “I want the juniors to remember that they’ve only got one season left and they need to play their hearts out,” he urged.

When asked about his hobbies and fears, Pompoco revealed some fun tidbits. His off-field time is spent enjoying moments with friends, though he admits to being less enthusiastic about movies and more apprehensive about the ocean and alien invasions.

With his parents as his primary role models, Pompoco admires their steadfastness and strength, traits he aspires to embody. Reflecting on the athletes he follows, he is particularly impressed by young college athletes and marvels at their talent and discipline.

“Looking back, I try to emulate the older kids who influenced me when I was young,” Pompoco shared, highlighting the importance of inspiring the next generation of Canfield Cardinals.

With the playoffs on the horizon, Canfield fans can draw assurance from the team’s strong leadership and collective resolve, led by MJ Pompoco, a player who is committed to not only his team’s success but also to leaving a lasting legacy.

The standout feature of the evening was an engaging conversation between host Saul and multifaceted Bulldog player, Jason Stefancin.

Jason, who has made a name for himself by mastering various positions on the field, discussed the physical and emotional challenges athletes endure post-game. “After a mentally and physically draining game like Friday night, I like to detach by hanging out with friends and watching football,” said Jason. He emphasized the importance of reflecting on past performances, epitomized by the team’s adherence to Coach Pav’s 24-hour rule—to evaluate the game, then move forward.

Despite the setbacks experienced on the field, the camaraderie in the locker room remained strong. “It’s quiet after a loss; you can hear a pin drop,” Jason stated. “But it’s about picking each other up and getting ready for the next battle.”

A highlight from the recent game was Jason’s flawlessly executed onside kick, displaying his prowess and strategic thinking. “I’ve done it countless times in practice. Pav trusts us to make those plays,” he said, acknowledging the crucial role of special teams.
