RAIDERS FALL JUST SHORT IN OVERTIME

CANFIELD OH- South Range did not shy away from a big challenge on Saturday as they welcomed in Division 1 powerhouse Akron Hoban. It was a battle to the end with the Knights outlasting the Raiders in an overtime thriller 92-83.

The Raiders grabbed a lead out of the gates, but it was clear from the tip that the game was going to be high tempo and high scoring. Both teams used their athleticism to trade transition buckets. After one quarter of play Hoban led 21-16.

In the second frame with a couple of players in foul trouble, it was the Raiders bench that came in and kept the pace for their offense. Emma Cunningham, and Hannah Crouse Player well in the quarter to keep it close. Crouse got a bucket at the end of the half to bring the Raiders within 3 at the break 40-37.

The Raiders opened the second half on a 8-0 run. Like most of the night though, moderate leads went away fast. Before a blink of an eye Hoban took a lead back and led 63-59 after 3. Izzy Lamparty had a great third quarter scoring 13 points in the frame with 5 rebounds.

The final frame was the lowest scoring quarter of the game, as the Raiders held Hoban to 13 points. With a break out layup by Izzy Lamparty the Raiders took a 76-74 lead with around 26 seconds left. Hoban’s Abby Stephens who didn’t score much in the game went to the free throw line and tied the game at 76 with 12 seconds left. Bree Kohler drove straight down the court but couldn’t finish a game winning shot, the Knights brought down the rebound and had 4 seconds to get down the floor. They very nearly did, but Hoban couldn’t get a shot off and the teams headed to overtime tied at 76.

The Knights outlasted a tired Raiders team in overtime, outscoring then 16-7 to win 92-83. The combined score of 175 points is the highest scoring game in South Range Girls Basketball history. The previous record was 147 in a 75-72 South Range win over Jackson Milton on February 8th, 2000.

For the Knights, they had an unbelievable performance from junior Lanae Riley who dropped 47 points in the game.

South Range was led by Izzy Lamparty who finished with 28 points. 21 of her points came in the second half. Lexi Giles had a strong night right behind her with 26. Bree Kohler was also in double figures with 10 points.
