WARRIORS OFFENSE SHINES IN WIN OVER HARVEY

Story by: Larry Jennings

East Ashtabula, OH – The Edgewood Lady Warriors continued their dominant season with a commanding 68-30 victory over the Painesville Harvey Red Raiders in a Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division matchup on Tuesday night. The win improved Edgewood’s record to 13-3 overall and 9-1 in conference play, while the Red Raiders dropped to 6-13 (3-7 in the conference).

The Warriors wasted no time setting the tone, applying pressure defense from the opening tip and racing out to a quick 6-0 lead within the first minute. The early burst forced Harvey to call an early timeout to regroup. De’Yonna Jackson got the Red Raiders on the board with a three-pointer from the corner, but Edgewood continued to control the pace, closing the first quarter with a 19-8 advantage.

The Warriors extended their dominance in the second quarter, outscoring Harvey 26-5 to take a commanding 45-13 lead into halftime. Carly Kray led the charge, putting up 15 first-half points as Edgewood overwhelmed the Red Raiders on both ends of the floor.

Harvey fought back in the third quarter, slightly cutting into the deficit, but the margin remained substantial at 57-24 entering the final period. With a running clock in place, time ran out on the Red Raiders’ comeback efforts, and the Warriors sealed the decisive 68-30 victory.

Kray led Edgewood in scoring with 17 points, followed closely by Leigha Guyton, who added 16. Haleigh Lewis paced the Red Raiders with 14 points, while Jackson finished with 9.

“It was all about defense,” said Edgewood head coach Randy Vencill. “Good defense leads to good offense, and we started of the game with steals and good looks, and that helps us for the rest of the game.”

The Warriors will look to keep their momentum going as they travel to face West Geauga on Saturday, while the Red Raiders will aim to bounce back on Friday when they host the Madison Blue Streaks.

FALCONS FLUSTERED BY HIGH POWERED HARVEY OFFENSE

Jefferson, OH- The Jefferson Falcons fell to the Harvey Red Raiders 50-24 on Friday night, as Harvey’s key players delivered one explosive play after another, overpowering the Falcons despite Jefferson’s best efforts.

Jefferson got off to a promising start, with quarterback Dylan Burlingham leading the way. At 8:40 in the first quarter, Burlingham connected with wide receiver Terry Brown for a 15-yard touchdown to give the Falcons an early 6-0 lead after the extra point was blocked. However, Harvey’s star running back Shaun Alston quickly responded with a 25-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 6-6 just under two minutes later.

Harvey’s offense then surged. Late in the first quarter, quarterback Markese Wise delivered a perfectly timed 80-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Trent Hall, and Alston added a two-point conversion to give the Red Raiders a 14-6 lead. Burlingham kept Jefferson within striking distance, scoring on a 5-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, but a failed two-point attempt left the Falcons trailing 14-12.

The Red Raiders took control after that. Alston continued his dominant night, ripping off a 45-yard touchdown run just 47 seconds after Jefferson’s score, and Chris Burt Jr. powered through for a 45-yard touchdown of his own. With Alston adding a two-point conversion, Harvey extended their lead to 22-12. Alston’s third-quarter heroics sealed the game for Harvey, as he opened the second half with a 45-yard touchdown run and then followed it up by tossing a 38-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Manny Toure.

Despite the relentless attack, Jefferson found a spark late in the third quarter when Burlingham connected with wide receiver Kaige Boczar on a 61-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 37-18. However, Harvey answered immediately, with Alston tearing off a 61-yard touchdown run on the next possession to widen the gap once again. Burt added his second touchdown of the night on a 3-yard run to make it 50-18 late in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Burlingham and Boczar linked up again for a 35-yard touchdown pass, giving the Falcons their final score of the game. Burlingham finished with an impressive night, accounting for all four of Jefferson’s touchdowns—throwing for three and rushing for one—but the Falcons struggled to contain Harvey’s playmakers.

Shaun Alston was the standout for Harvey, with three rushing touchdowns, a passing touchdown, and multiple two-point conversions, making him the game’s key difference-maker. Chris Burt Jr. added two rushing touchdowns, while Trent Hall and Manny Toure each hauled in a touchdown pass.

Jefferson (0-4) will try to bounce back next week as they travel to face the undefeated Orange Lions (4-0). Meanwhile, Harvey (2-2) will return home to take on the Conneaut Spartans (1-3).

Key Highlights:

  • Early Jefferson Strike: Jefferson’s offense started strong with a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dylan Burlingham to wide receiver Terry Brown at 8:40 in the first quarter. The extra point was blocked, but the Falcons seized an early 6-0 lead.
  • Shaun Alston’s All-Around Dominance: Harvey’s Shaun Alston had a standout night, breaking free for a 25-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 6-6 in the first quarter. Alston was just getting started, later scoring on an electrifying 45-yard run in the third quarter and adding a 61-yard breakaway run shortly after. In addition to his rushing scores, Alston threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Manny Toure, showcasing his versatility.
  • Big Play from Markese Wise and Trent Hall: Late in the first quarter, Harvey quarterback Markese Wise connected with wide receiver Trent Hall on a massive 80-yard touchdown pass, shifting the momentum in Harvey’s favor. The drive was capped off by a two-point conversion run from Alston, pushing the Red Raiders’ lead to 14-6.
  • Chris Burt Jr. Breaks Through: Harvey’s Chris Burt Jr. added to the offensive onslaught with two crucial rushing touchdowns. His first was a 45-yard sprint in the second quarter, extending Harvey’s lead to 22-12. Burt found the end zone again late in the third, punching in a 3-yard score to put Harvey ahead 50-18.
  • Jefferson’s Offensive Response: Dylan Burlingham kept Jefferson competitive throughout the game, accounting for all four of the Falcons’ touchdowns. In the second quarter, he scrambled for a 5-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 14-12, and in the third quarter, he threw a pair of deep touchdown passes to Kaige Boczar. The first was a 61-yard bomb that showed Jefferson’s ability to strike from distance, and the second was a 35-yard score in the fourth quarter. Despite his efforts, the Falcons couldn’t overcome Harvey’s relentless attack.
  • Kaige Boczar Shines: Wide receiver Kaige Boczar was a bright spot for Jefferson, hauling in two long touchdown passes of 61 and 35 yards. His big-play ability gave Jefferson brief hope, especially in the third quarter, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.
  • Second-Half Surge by Harvey: Harvey put the game out of reach in the third quarter with a series of big plays. Alston’s 45-yard touchdown run at 10:46 was followed immediately by a 38-yard touchdown pass from Alston to Manny Toure. Burt’s 3-yard touchdown late in the third sealed Harvey’s win.

The Edgewood Warriors kicked off their home opener at Corlew Stadium in Ashtabula Township, squaring off against the Painesville Harvey Red Raiders in what turned into a rainy and physical battle. Edgewood, coming into the game with a 1-1 record, was looking to build on their 18-7 victory over Grand Valley. On the other hand, the Red Raiders, winless at 0-2, were eager to bounce back from a tough 49-7 loss to Geneva.
The weather was not kind to either team’s passing game, as a steady drizzle evolved into a downpour, limiting offensive options. However, the game’s storyline quickly centered on Harvey’s Shahn Alston, returning from injury after missing the first two games. Alston made his presence felt early and often, eventually finding the end zone three times to lead the Red Raiders to a 22-13 victory.
Edgewood caught an early break in the first quarter when a miscue on a Red Raiders punt deep in their own territory was recovered by D’Angelo Sanchez at the 15-yard line. This set up JJ DuFour, who broke free for a 7-yard touchdown run off the right tackle. Aidan Kachersky’s extra point gave the Warriors a 7-0 lead with 2:49 left in the first quarter, injecting energy into the home crowd.
But Harvey answered quickly in the second quarter, with Alston taking a 15-yard run around the left side to score the Red Raiders’ first points. A missed extra point left Edgewood clinging to a 7-6 lead. Alston struck again later in the second quarter, this time on another run to the left side, capping off the drive with his second touchdown. A successful 2-point conversion by Chris Burt Jr. gave Harvey a 14-7 advantage.
The Warriors had a chance to respond, driving deep into Harvey territory late in the first half, but a costly fumble inside the 10-yard line halted their momentum as the Red Raiders recovered, preserving their lead.
After a back-and-forth third quarter, Alston found the end zone for the third time, this time on a 3-yard run off right tackle. Burt Jr. added his second 2-point conversion of the night, extending Harvey’s lead to 22-7 and putting the Warriors on their heels.
In the waning moments of the fourth quarter, Edgewood’s Nate Stewart connected with Riley Baldwin on a 10-yard touchdown pass, trimming the deficit to 22-13. However, a failed 2-point conversion attempt sealed the final score.
Edgewood will look to regroup as they stay home next week to host Hawken, while the Red Raiders aim to build on this victory when they travel to Jefferson to take on the Falcons.
