STRUTHERS EDGES OUT FALCONS IN THE FIELDHOUSE

STRUTHERS, OH – As we inch closer and closer to tournament play, we all know the games will be more intense and tougher matchups. That was the case in the OT thriller we witnessed in Struthers, Tuesday night as the Wildcats hosted Austintown Fitch. Struthers started out hot, looking like they were going to put up a very sizable victory over the Falcons. The Wildcats led by ten at half and also at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter is where the Falcons got life and even took their first lead since the open minutes of the game. DeShawn Vaugnh Jr. hit a massive three for the Falcons with under a minute to play in regulation to go up 63-62. Struthers senior Dante Colorissi split free throw shots to tie the game up and send it to OT. In overtime, it was a back and forth affair. But thanks to Struthers junior Chance Laczko who hit a massive three of his own, the Wildcats got the victory over the Falcons, 77-75.

For Struthers, Sal Shaffer led the way with 21 points. Ronnie Leonard added 17, Dante Colorissi contributed 14, Nick Delgratta put 12, and Chance Laczko ended with 10 on the night.

For Austintown, Allen Underwood led the Falcons with a game-high 28 points. DeShawn Vaugnh Jr. contributed a game-high 20 points on the night.

WELLSVILLE TAKES FIRST PLACE IN THE EOAC

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – When at least a share of a championship is on the line, you have to be locked in. That is how it was in the matchup between Wellsville and Valley Christian Tuesday night. It seemed like the Tigers would easily run away with a victory early in the first half, thanks to junior Isaiah Greathouse who pushed Wellsville to a 31-17 lead at half. But the Eagles found life in the second half to make it an intense 39-31 game with the Tigers still leading. Valley’s Joey Battista lit up the court with three’s late in the game to cut the Tigers lead down to just 3, making it 44-41. It was not enough for the Eagles as Wellsville pushed back to extend their lead further to get the victory and the share of the EOAC championship, 52-46.

For Wellsville, Isaiah Greathouse led the way with a game-high 27 points. Edward Stock and Jaxon Brewer both added 8 on the night respectively.

BRUNGARD REACHES 1000 IN TIGERS VICTORY

GIRARD OH- Springfield came into Tuesday night’s matchup with Girard carrying a perfect record, and a brand new MVAC crown. This game was going to test them against a higher division school, and act as a measuring stick for the Tigers going forward into the tournaments. They measured up pretty well. The Tigers rolled to a 61-35 win over Girard.

Springfield had 3 players in double figures to lead their offense. Adam Wharry put together a spectacular 24 point performance. Jake Joyce continues his positive impact on the offense with 14 points. Beau Brungard was able to add 1000 career points to his athletic resume. He only needed 2 points coming into the night, and he got into double figures with 10.

Gus Johnson put in 16 points for the Indians. Thomas Cardiero contributed 7 points to the cause.

Springfield has another non conference test on Friday as they hit the road to LaBrae to take on the Vikings.

MOONEY SPOILS RAIDERS SENIOR NIGHT

CANFIELD OH- It was senior night in South Range. The Raiders had a blast honoring their 4 seniors. Aidan English, Mark Naples, Corey Penick, and Zach Smith were all honored in the pregame ceremony, along with the senior cheerleaders.

After the emotions of senior night, there was still Basketball to be played. The Raiders controlled the tempo for the first quarter, and most of the second. Well into that second frame, the Raiders led 12-8. Their patient offense has effectively grounded Mooney’s high flying offense. However, a string of live ball turnover that led to easy buckets fueled a 20-4 run between the first and second halves. Despite a push back from South Range to keep the Cardinals in striking distance, they couldn’t push back ahead. Mooney took away the 54-41 win.

Leading Mooney was Ashton O’Brien who scored 19 points. Mick Hergenrother wasn’t too far behind him, he was also in double figures with 17. Rocco Turner was the third Cardinal in double figures with 11.

South Range was paced by Ayden Leon with 10 points. Landon Moore put together a strong night with 9 points.

COWBOYS HAVE ENOUGH TO GET PAST POLAND

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Coming into the night, the Poland Bulldogs (14-7)held a 8-1 series lead over the Chaney Cowboys (14-7) since 2006, with the Cowboys first victory coming over the Bulldogs in last year’s district final. While Chaney controlled from the start of last season’s matchup, Poland came into the night looking to make things closer this time around.

Both teams got off to a good start from beyond the arc in the first quarter, sinking a combined five shots from deep, shooting 56% from three. While this matchup saw hot starts from long range, the same success did not carry over to the charity stripe, going 1-4 from the line.

A hard fought first quarter saw Chaney hold a four-point lead heading into the second, that would later by expanded all the way to nine with under three minutes to play in the half. Looking to close the gap before break, Poland star’s Colosimoand Dedo combined for the last seven points of the half, bringing the Dawgs within a score.

While Poland brought the intensity to end our first half of play, the Bulldogs were not able to carry it over to start the third. Chaney jumped on Poland to expand their lead out to nine once again, thanks to a 7-0 run courtesy of freshman, Matthew Jones.

The Bulldogs would end the third trailing by five but would be outscored fourteen to eight in the final period. Clive Wilson led the way for Chaney in the fourth with six, giving the Cowboys their second straight victory over Poland, 57-46.

ROCKETS TURN ON AFTERBURNERS IN THE FOURTH

LOWELLVILLE OH- The MVAC had numerous conference games occurring Friday night. Including a sneaky matchup between #8 Lowellville Rockets and The Waterloo Vikings.

In a surprisingly late first matchup between the conference opponents, round one took place in Atwater with a great crowd on hand.

The lone senior starter for Lowellville, Justin Beeson, caught fire in the first for the rockets. As he nailed down three 3PT field goals in the first quarter!

However, Waterloo was using that crowd’s energy to their advantage! The Vikings kept it close in the first, trailing Lowellville 19-15 after one.

Defense was the name of the game in the first half for The Vikings, as sophomore starter Drew Flarida had a tough defensive assignment on Anthony Lucente for The Rockets. A matchup that Flarida held his own against the junior 1000 point scorer.

Waterloo was a bucket better than The Rockets in the second, winning the quarter 15-13, leaving Lowellville with a slim 32-30 halftime lead.

Navarre Alhassan provided the offensive spark for The Vikings, as he was responsible for 16 of Waterloo’s 30 halftime points.

Keeping it close in the first half lit a fire under the Atwater crowd, which propelled The Vikings in the third.

Defensively, Waterloo almost brought Lowellvilles offense to a halt. The Vikings won the third 10-7 and held a 40-39 lead going into the final eight minutes.

However, The Rockets blasted off in the fourth quarter, with multiple players scoring double digits to finish the night! With Lowellville’s defense locking it down, and Waterloo having a lid on the bucket, The Rockets avoided the upset and came out of Atwater victorious 57-47.

Lowellville had four different starters finish with 10 or more points.

Mark Dubos – 10 PTS

Vinny Ballone – 11 PTS

Justin Beeson – 14 PTS

Anthony Lucente – 13 PTS

Waterloo (6-12) will wait little time, with another home matchup, this time versus Rootstown (6-11) on Saturday, February 12th.

#8 Lowellville (16-3) will have a tough assignment, as Warren JFK (11-7) comes to town on Tuesday, February 15th.
