CLIPPERS TAKE BATTLE WITH HUBBARD

COLUMBIANA OH- Columbiana welcomed Hubbard on Tuesday preparing for a battle between two of the area’s best golf teams. The Clippers came out on fire as they defeated the Eagles 154-160 at Valley Golf Club on Tuesday. Rocco Crawford and Anthony Hall each took the low score honors as the Clipper duo each posted a round of 37. Teammates Trenton Hall and Blake Unger also carded very solid rounds in the victory as each posted 40.

Hubbard’s Colten Smith led the way for the Eagles, carding a 38. Gate Rusnek and Matt Johnston recorded 39 respectively while Garret Brojkovich added a 44.

CANFIELD SWEEPS THE AAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

BOARDMAN OH- Canfield showed why they are the class of the AAC in golf as the Cardinals claimed both Boys and Girls team titles on Tuesday on the South Course at Mill Creek Golf Course. Canfield’s Mick Ambrose claimed individual medalist honors carding a day’s best 72 for the boys. Ambrose’s impressive performance along with Bryce Roberts 76, Nathan Miller 79, and Simon Kovass 81, helped guide the Cards to claiming the team title as well with a score of 308. Boardman (336) was led to their second place finish by Zach Ganser 79, Luke DeJoseph 85, Coop Mraz and Chase Zelesnak would each shoot 86. Howland’s (352) third place finish was paced by Deacon Mock 83, Anthony Palumbo 87, also Vincent Weeks and Alex Gumino contributed a score of 91 respectively. Fitch (355) took fourth behind John Darnley 86, Carson Fuller 88, Evan James 90 and Joey Wollet 91.

The Girls division saw Boardman’s Sophia Rivera earn medalist honors posting a tournament best 77.  Canfield took home the team title with a collective score of 356. The Cardinals were led by Taylor Marrone 86, Alex Conley 88, Aubree Philibin 89, Natalie Sawicki and Miya Cohol each recorded a 93. Boardman (403) was led to a second place finish by Rivera’s 77,  Gianna Ross 90, Hailey Rusnak 105, Shaelan WIlliams 131, and Tessa Ross 134. Howland (413) took home third behind Jane Bronson 95, Sloan Wolanzyk 104, Hannah Zsu 106, while Mia Walters finished with a 108 and Miya Foster would shoot 133.

UNITED SHOWS OFF EOAC DOMINANCE

LISBON OH- EOAC girls golf was on full display at Twin Spring Golf Course on Thursday afternoon. United played host to Columbiana and Southern in what was anticipated to be a highly competitive match.

The Golden Eagles (170) had better plans as three players turned in personal best rounds on their way to victory over their conference opponents. Mati Zines took medalist honors carding the day’s best score of 33. Emma Murphy contributed a 43 while Olivia Ashburn 41, Abby Jones 53, and Alaina Brewer 59 all recorded personal bests for the victors.

Columbiana (189) was led by Hailey Muntean’s round of 38. The Clippers received contributions from Claire Brewer 46 and Hannah Moffett 52. Sophia Perry and Victoria Buckingham each scored 53 respectively, while Mackenzie Day added a 54 for Columbiana.

Kenedy Lewis’ 43 topped the card for Southern (198) on the day. Paige Riggs 47, Caty Brewer 49 and Rylee Digman 56 would all contribute for the Indians.

SOUTHERN BAGS A TRI MATCH VICTORY

LAKE MILTON OH- The Southern Local Girls Golf Team traveled to Lake Milton Wednesday looking for mid season tri match victory. The Indians came through with that victory over Mineral Ridge and Lowellville on a blustery cool day at Olde Dutch Mill. Southern-(221) was led by Kenedy Lewis who posted a day’s best 44. Paige Riggs 54, Rylee Digman, 60 and Cate Brewer 64 all contributed to the win for the Indians.

Mineral Ridge recorded a team score of 232 on the day. Aubree Brunton carded a 53, while a trio of freshman Alayna Valley 55, Savannah Turek 60 and Issy Showalter 64 rounded out the scoring for the Rams.

Gianna Clemente 62 and Joclyn DelSignore 67 lead the way for Lowellville who finished with a score of 272 as a team.

DAWSON TAKES BUCKEYE 8 TITLE

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- Two rounds spread out over two days was not enough to settle the individual title at the Buckeye 8 Golf Championship.

East Liverpool’s Preston Dawson put himself in contention for the top spot, shooting 79 on August 14 at Cadiz Country Club. Tuesday at Belmont Hills in the final round the Potter Senior carded a 76 forcing a playoff with defending champion St Clairsville’s Andrew Abel. One playoff hole would decide the winner as Abel, after a tough luck drive, recorded a bogey while Dawson would go on to post par claiming the individual title.

St Clairsville would take the team title posting a two round score of 632. Beaver Local finished 4th with a score of 791. Owen Hill led the way for the Beavers with rounds of 92-82. Teammates Andre Wiegand 100-104, and Britton Hickman 105-101 each contributed to the 4th place finish.

East Liverpool would finish in the 6th position as a team.  The Potters received contributions from Aaron Dieringer 99-98 and Cooper Klein 114-117.

CLIPPERS LAND AT THE TOP OF TRI MATCH STANDINGS

COLUMBIANA OH- The Columbiana Clippers golf team flew into Twin Springs Golf Course ready to continue their hot play that has guided them all season.

The results on Tuesday were no different as Columbiana 158 defeated their opponents from Southern 204 and EL Christian 217.  Blake Unger led the Clippers with a 37 followed closely by teammate Rocco Crawford’s 38. Anthony Hall 40 and Trenton Hall 53 rounded out the card for Columbiana.

Southern was led by Justus Black posting a 45, Logan Howell 48, Wyatt Bach 53 and Zac Mayfield 58. Levin Williams carded a solid 44 for EL Christian.

CARDINALS CLAIM URSULINE INVITATIONAL

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Youngstown Country Club was the scene on Monday as the Ursuline Invitational hosted 19 golf teams from various schools throughout the area. Cardinal Mooney would sweep the top spots in team and individual scores on the day.

The Cardinals Rocco Turner continued his stellar season as he took individual honors carding a 3-under 68. Alex Eckstein 73 and Dante Turner 74 contributed to the team title score of 300 out dueling University by a slim 2 stroke margin. Warren JFK would finish the day in 3rd with a score of 305. Andrew Lapolla would lead the Eagles carding a 75, while Bryce VanHorn and Henry Phillips added scores of 76. Ursuline Gold took the 5th place position, the Irish’s Chase Forsythe posted a 74,

Breen Dahman contributed a 79 for the host team. Archbishop Hoban claimed 6th place, the Knights were led by Ethan Cooper and Kord Ready each with a solid round of 78.  West Branch’s Jaxon Robb posted a 74, teammate Dominic Brenner added an 81 helping their Warriors secure a spot in the top 10.

ZINES EYES HER BEST YEAR YET

HANOVERTON OH- United High School’s senior golfer, Mati Zines, has proven to be a force to be reckoned with on the golf course. Zines has consistently demonstrated remarkable skill and determination, amassing a remarkable collection of achievements throughout her high school career.

In 2022, Zines showcased her exceptional talent with a series of achievements that set the tone for her future success. Notably, she clinched the title of Sectional Champion at Pine Lakes and District Champion at Sable Creek. Zines’ prowess was evident as she secured the 11th spot in the State Finals held at OSU Grey, further cementing her reputation as a rising golf star. Not content with these laurels, she set school records for both 18-hole and 9-hole games, underlining her commitment to excellence.

The following year, in 2023, Zines continued to shine, amassing an impressive seven tournament wins and securing top-three finishes in five additional events. Her dominance was undeniable as she clinched the Greatest Golfer of the Valley long drive championship, a testament to her power on the course. Zines’ unwavering dedication led to further school records, with an astounding 31 for 9 holes and a new team record for both 18-hole and 9-hole games.

However, Zines’ achievements extend beyond high school tournaments. During the Women’s Adult Open Division tournament at Millcreek, she achieved a personal best with a remarkable score of 72. Her remarkable consistency and growth did not go unnoticed, as she announced his verbal commitment to Youngstown State for 2024, signaling a bright future ahead.

Mati Zines’ impact on the golfing world is undeniable. Her dedication, remarkable skill, and consistently outstanding performances have solidified her legacy at United High School. As she prepares to embark on the next chapter of his golfing journey, it’s clear that Zines will continue to leave an indelible mark on the sport she’s mastered.

WARRIORS SEND GARFIELD HOME

BROOKFIELD OH- The Garfield golf team traveled to Brookfield on Tuesday looking to come away with a key midseason MVAC victory. The hosts had other plans as the Warriors came away with the 188-210 victory at Yankee Run Golf Course.

Brayden DeMaria came away with the low round of the day posting a 42. Hunter Warrender and Cody Davidon each carded a 47 respectively in victory.

The G-Men were led by Landon Gedeon with a 47, while teammates Hunter Anderson and Tyler Baczkowski each contributed a round of 52.

POTTERS KEEP THEIR EYES ON THE GREEN

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- Long time rivals took to the links on Tuesday as Beaver Local traveled to East Liverpool as each team looked to secure bragging rights over the other. It was the Potters on this day that came away with the tight victory over the Beavers 195-199 at East Liverpool Country Club.

East Liverpool’s Aaron Dieringer took medalist honors with a round of 43. Preston Dawson carded a 45 while teammate Brody Vulgamore contributed a 49. The Beavers were led by Owen Hill with a 44, Andre Wiegand added a 47 and Britton Hickman posted a 52.
