SILVERMAN SPEARHEADS NEW GIRLS TENNIS PROGRAM AT GIRARD

GIRARD OH- Girard is getting a shiny new toy in its chest of sports, and it’s coming in the form of girls tennis. Girard is starting up its new program this fall headed up by JJ Silverman who will serve as the head coach of the girls tennis team. Silverman works as the Girard school system as a student resource officer and when a family member came into the district needing an avenue to drive her passion for tennis, JJ stepped up. Wanting to give her and anyone else in Girard who wanted it the full high school athlete experience JJ got the Girard Tennis ball rolling.  To his surprise many girls showed interest in picking up the new sport. More than enough to fill a quality team.

Now the focus is getting the girls that will fill the roster things they’ll need to succeed. Whether that be a court to call home, or any equipment a new tennis player might need Silverman is focused on making it a reality. The community has already shown how much they are willing to back him and the girls.  It’s what makes Girard such a special place, and why even though he’s a Liberty Leopard graduate JJ can still call Girard a home.

Technically the team will be a club sport for the first three years of its existence, but they will still carry a full schedule, and be eligible for the state tournament.  August 1st will mark the inaugural season of Girard girls tennis.

Silverman took the time to come on YSN’s Running Point to talk about everything that goes into starting a new program, what drove him to get the ball moving, and so much more. Check out this exclusive interview with the head coach of Girard Girls Tennis, only on YSN!

SALEM TENNIS COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH KEITH PARKER

SALEM OH- Salem tennis is off to a strong start to the season. When head coach Keith Parker took over last season, no one on the team had played competitive tennis. Now here they are with a week full of sweeps a year later. The Quakers turnaround has been dramatic, and coach Parker credits it to the hard work the team has put in in the off season.  It is hard to get better during the season, so a lot of their growth from year one to year two is behind the scenes work.

Coach Parker is also actively working to grow the program, and the sport of tennis in the community. They’ve had skills clinics in the winter with great turn out. Coming from a tennis hot bed in Indians, coach Parker knows what a great tennis community looks like.

Coach Parker took the time to come on YSN’s Running Point to talk about his squad this year. He gave Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell and introduction to the tennis world. They also talk about team culture, growth of the sport, and much more. Check out episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Keith Parker.
