CRESTVIEW MAKES IT FIVE IN A ROW

MEDINA OH- Crestview Volleyball continued their dominant run as they clinched their 5th consecutive district championship and their 8th overall under the seasoned guidance of head coach Alisha Auer. The team showcased their excellence by defeating Kirtland in a thrilling four-set match with scores of 25-19, 16-25, 25-23, and 25-20. Kirtland emerged as only the second team this season to win a set against the formidable Crestview squad.

Crestview’s performance was nothing short of stellar, with several key players making significant contributions. Grace Auer was a standout with an exceptional triple-double, tallying 21 kills, 18 assists, and 18 digs. Abbey Emch also had a standout double-double performance, amassing 18 kills and 14 digs. Lainey Auer chipped in with 7 kills, 22 assists, and 6 digs, while Julia Blasko held down the defensive end with 15 digs.

With their district championship secure, Crestview now sets their sights on the Regional Semifinals. They are poised to face Smithville in their upcoming matchup, scheduled for Thursday at 6:00 at Barberton High School.

MCDONALD CLAIMS PROGRAM’S FIRST DISTRICT CROWN

In a historic triumph, McDonald’s volleyball team claimed their program’s first-ever district championship by sweeping conference rival Western Reserve with scores of 25-20, 25-22, and 25-17. This victory was particularly sweet for McDonald, as they had previously been bested twice by Western Reserve in the regular season.

McDonald’s star players stepped up to secure this monumental win. Gianna Costantino put on a remarkable performance with 14 kills and 13 digs, achieving a well-deserved double-double. Juliana Krumpak demonstrated her versatility with 8 kills and an impressive 16 digs, while Grace Bundy contributed 11 kills and 7 digs. Lauren Sierra added 6 kills to the team’s tally. Megan Klockner orchestrated the offense with 31 assists and made her presence known with 9 digs and 2 aces, while Miley Titus was a stalwart on the defensive end with 11 digs, 3 assists, and 1 ace.

Western Reserve, although valiant, couldn’t secure the victory in the championship match. Alyvia Hughes led her team with 17 kills and 19 digs, showcasing her skill on both sides of the court. Lisa Eichert’s 13 kills and 19 digs marked a significant milestone in her career, surpassing 1000 kills and 1000 digs. Haylee Fellows contributed 17 assists and 6 digs, and Angelina Cappabianca added 4 kills and 3 blocks.

With this historic district championship win, McDonald demonstrated their resilience and determination. In this next stage of their journey, McDonald will face off against Canton Central Catholic at 7:30.

ALL IN A DAY’S WORK

By Ty Bartell

AKRON OH- There is little to no doubt that senior season for each athlete is its own unique experience.
In some sports, seeing teams that have three or four integral seniors that have played together for years, others may have almost their entire team loaded with senior talent. Then there are the teams that have little to no seniors, it just depends on the season. This season, for the Archbishop Hoban Knights volleyball team they are repping a lone senior, their setter, Sophia Day!

Playing volleyball since elementary school, Day has always had confidence about her game and her ability in the sport. Making the transfer to The Knights her sophomore season, Sophia had found a home and a newfound love for volleyball. Not just an admirer of the game, Day can facilitate an offense with the best of them, racking up a team-high 437 assists while dropping in another team-high 42 aces from the service line this season!

The success Sophia had had this season is directly reflected on the rest of the team as The Knights are a very impressive 23-0 and have made it back to Districts. The goals for Hoban are lofty this season and although having only one senior is challenging, Day welcomes the challenge and sees it as an opportunity, believing in the teammates around her each and every single match.

You will not want to miss this very special edition of Player Profile when Ty Bartell gets the opportunity to chat with the lone senior leader of The Knights, Sophia Day! Keep updated with all Archbishop Hoban athletics scores, stats, stories and more on YSN!

RAMS RUMBLE ON TO TITLE GAME

ORWELL OH- In a stunning display of dominance, Mineral Ridge secured their spot in the district championship with an emphatic three-set sweep of Columbiana. The final scores were 25-16, 25-6, and 25-13, leaving no doubt about their superiority on the volleyball court.

Ava Hulett was nothing short of spectacular for Mineral Ridge, delivering an outstanding performance with 17 kills, 11 digs, 3 aces, and 3 blocks, earning herself a well-deserved double-double. She showcased her prowess in both offensive and defensive aspects of the game.

Faith Schneider also had a remarkable evening, contributing 16 kills, 13 digs, 4 aces, and 2 blocks, securing her double-double as well. Notably, this match marked a milestone in her career, as she reached an impressive 1,000 career digs.

Setting the stage for these incredible performances was Samantha Aulet, who dished out 42 assists, showcasing her incredible playmaking abilities. She also chipped in with 9 digs and 1 ace, proving her all-around talent.

Defensively, Sheryaliz Bonilla was rock-solid for Mineral Ridge, tallying 17 digs to ensure that Columbiana’s attacks were met with strong resistance.

On the opposing side, Ellie Jackson led Columbiana with 5 kills, 9 assists, and 3 digs. Kelsey Cameron added 3 kills to their tally, and Ava Heinrich worked tirelessly, amassing 11 digs.

With this resounding victory, Mineral Ridge now gears up for the district championship game, where they will face the formidable first-seeded Mentor Lake Catholic. The showdown is set to take place on Saturday at 7:00 at Grand Valley High School.

LAKEVIEW GETS STUNG BY THE HORNETS

By Ty Bartell

MEDINA OH- One of the best parts of the state tournament in volleyball are the stories that are created
in the postseason. 4 different divisions, 16 different regions and 64 different districts, each with their own unique set of stories. In the Division 3, Region 9, Northeast 1 district, the story of The Kirtland Hornets versus The Lakeview Bulldogs in a district semi-final had a tie in of a third team. The Crestview Rebels. Rewinding it back to last year, The Rebels defeated both Lakeview in the district semis and Kirtland in the district final en route to their District Championship a year ago.

This year, the #3 seeded Bulldogs rolled into the tournament with a 20-4 record, while the #11 seeded Hornets were 15-8 prior to the match.
Both teams battled it out in a close set one; however, Kirtland got key plays down the stretch to clinch the opening set 25-21. The heartbreak did not stop there for The Bulldogs, both teams exchanged in another back-and-forth affair in set two, but again The Hornets saw themselves ahead of Lakeview 25-21 in set two. Holding a 2-0 set advantage, Kirtland had all the pressure applied on The Bulldogs. Lakeview would grab an early 10-5 lead in an attempt to get a set back. But The Hornets would not be denied on Wednesday night, winning a third straight close set 25-20 to claim the district semi-final in straight sets over Lakeview. Kirtland (16-8) will now square-off with Crestview (25-0) in a District Championship rematch from a year ago!

We here at YSN wish the best of luck to the Lakeview players  in accomplishing all their future goals. It was and always is an honor to be a small part of your season! Stay tuned with YSN to keep updated on all Lakeview Bulldogs athletics scores, stats, stories and more!

CRESTVIEW CRUISES TO DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

By Ty Bartell

MEDINA OH- When it comes to the state tournament in volleyball, district championships have become synonymous with The Crestview Rebels. In the midst of yet another impressive season, The Rebels rode into a district semi-final matchup on Wednesday evening, sporting a perfect 24-0 record and the #2 seed in the Division 3, Region 9, Northeast 1 bracket. The team opposing them in the match? A very talented Dalton Bulldogs squad, representing the #14 seed and sported a deceiving 12-12 record prior. With a ticket to the District Championship on the line and both teams’ fan bases following them in bunches, it made for an electric atmosphere in Medina High School!

Crestview grabbed an early lead in the opening set and despite some battle back from Dalton, The Rebels would put together key rallies to claim the opener 25-18, taking a 1-0 set advantage. Dalton made it a point to play from in front in the second set and that they did, grabbing an early advantage and holding it for a while. The Rebels would clean up the serve-receive and mounted another comeback in a set on the season, winning a close battle 25-22 in set two! The Rebels would not hold anything back in set three, playing with all the momentum, Crestview grabbed the initial lead and never let it go, winning the set 25-12 and the match in straight sets 3-0 over Dalton.

“Ms. Triple-Double” Grace Auer was dazzling in another premier performance posting 15 kills, 23 assists, 10 digs and 4 blocks in the match! Abby Emch was a two-way force with a 13 kill and 10 dig double-double. Julia Blasko also got it done on both sides with 8 kills and 9 digs of her own. Might as well call Lainy Auer “Ms. Triple-Double jr” as she notched 12 kills, 14 assists and 18 digs in the win!

Crestview (25-0) will now meet Kirtland (16-8) in the District Championship match on Saturday, October 28th at Medina High School with a 7 p.m. start time. Keep updated with all Crestview Rebels athletics scores, stats, stories and more on YSN!

FAITH CAN MOVE MOUNTAINS

MINERAL RIDGE OH- Faith Schneider, the senior outside hitter for Mineral Ridge, is undoubtedly a player of exceptional caliber. She’s the kind of hitter that many teams can only dream of having. Not only can Faith deliver powerful kills on offense, but she does so with remarkable efficiency. Her contributions, however, extend far beyond her offensive prowess. Faith is a standout on defense and serves as a beacon of emotional leadership on the court for the Rams.

Faith’s high-energy style of play and her role as the team’s “hype man” have been constants in her journey. As a senior, what has changed is the mantle of leadership she carries, inspiring the next generation of Ram stars. She is a true role model, embodying the essence of playing the game the right way, and she does so with boundless passion and energy.

One key partnership that defines Faith’s impact is her connection with fellow senior Samantha Aulet, who serves as the team’s setter. Their synchronization is a pivotal reason why the Rams’ offense operates so smoothly. The fact that Faith has another fantastic outside hitter, Ava Hulett, as a teammate only adds to the team’s offensive prowess. The friendly competition between Faith and Ava fuels them both to consistently be at their best.

Faith’s statistics in 2023 speak volumes about her prowess on the court: 353 kills, a .385 hitting percentage, 4.6 kills per set, 56 aces, 354 digs, and 26 blocks. Her numbers reflect her all-around excellence as a volleyball player.

As Faith Schneider looks to the future, there’s no doubt that she will achieve success in everything she sets her mind to. While the Rams will certainly miss her presence on the court once she graduates, her legacy of leadership will continue to resonate for years to come, leaving an indelible mark on the Mineral Ridge program. Faith’s passion and dedication to the game will serve as an enduring source of inspiration for her teammates and future Ram athletes.

HOBAN BATTLES THROUGH BLUE DEVILS

PARMA HEIGHTS OH- The story of The Archbishop Hoban Knights volleyball team has been quite a fun one this season. Exceeding all expectations on the season, Hoban rolled into the playoffs with an undefeated record, winning both a sectional semi-final and final as the #4 seed in the Division 1, Region 2, Northeast 5 bracket. Arriving at the district semi-final Tuesday night a perfect 23-0 on the season. Opposing The Knights? A very good Brunswick Blue Devils squad who was 17-7 entering the match on Tuesday.

Both teams were amped up and ready to book their ticket to the District Championship and the opening set played out as such, with Hoban getting the edge 25-21 in the opening set. However, Brunswick would battle back, claiming the next two sets by the same score of 25-19 to go up 2-1 in sets on The Knights, just the third time this season the Knights had given up two sets to an opposing team. Hoban played inspired volleyball in set four, emphatically winning it by a large margin 25-14 to force a critical fifth set. Going down to the wire,  The Knights did what they have done so many times this season, they found a way! Winning set five 15-12 and the match 3-2 in comeback fashion to make it to the District Championship!

Amber Watson led the way in kills for The Knights with 19 on the evening. Ava Norton did major work behind the service line, racking up 15 service points and 7 aces in the match! Macie Mintz cleaned up the floor defensively with 19 digs, while Summara Keith fortified the net with 4 blocks. The senior Sophia Day set herself and The Knights up with another match, to the tune of 28 assists to facilitate the offense in the victory!

Hoban (24-0) will now face #3 seeded Avon (23-1) in a premier matchup with The Eagles on Thursday, October 26th at Valley Forge High School, slated for a 7 p.m. start time. Stay up-to-date with all Archbishop Hoban athletics scores, stats, stories and more on YSN!
