CANFIELD NOT PHASED BY DAY LONG DELAY

By Michael Wolfgang

CANFIELD, OHIO – After taking an extra day to complete, the Canfield Cardinals finally finished their game from Wednesday night, knocking off Warren Harding 8-2. In the first inning on Wednesday, Canfield jumped on Harding right away as they put up a four spot.

Ben Slanker drove in two runs on an RBI double. Canfield then put up for more runs in the third inning where Scottie Eaton, Stephen Maszczak, Jameson Beck, and AJ Havrilla all produced RBI’s in the inning. Michael Patellis started the game on the hill for the Cardinals, going on and two-thirds innings giving up two runs on one hit and fanning two Raiders batters.

The winning pitcher was Eaton as his stat line reads four hits given up, no runs allowed, striking out two, and two walks. Noah Anzevino got two innings of work out of the bullpen.

Canfield will return to the diamond on Friday at 5:00 p.m. to pay a visit to the Lakeview Bulldogs.

JEFFERSON PUTS THEIR BEST FOOT FORWARD

CANFIELD OH- Jefferson played maybe their best game of the season when it mattered most. On Saturday at South Range, a place that has been haunting for the Falcons in league play became a place of a fever dream as they beat Canton South 49-35 to earn a spot in the Regional Final.

The offensive game plan was simple, keep the ball as long as possible, and finish drives. The Falcons did just that. They dominated on the ground, and controlled the clock.  Grant Hitchcock ran for 191 yards and scored 6 touchdowns. The Falcon quarterback was also perfect through the air going 5/5.  The only time the Falcons had the ball and didn’t score was the last possession of the game where they iced the game in victory formation. Jefferson held a 28-7 lead at half, after Canton South scored out of halftime, the Falcons responded with a 10 minute drive spanning 76 yards and ending in a touchdown.  It was the defining drive of the game.

Jefferson will advance to the Regional Final just one step away from state. It won’t be an easy step though as they region’s top team West Branch awaits.  That game will be played Saturday at 7:00 at Niles.

WARRIORS SEE SEASON END AGAINST STREETSBORO

BELOIT OH- The Warriors soccer team (9-7-1) fell to Streetsboro (8-9-1) by a 2-0 score at West Branch High School on a brisk and chilly night in an OHSAA Sectional Tournament game on Monday.

The Rockets got on the board in the 31st minute with a goal and took a 1-0 halftime lead.  The Warriors were pressed for most of the game, but held strong.  The back breaking goal came just 13 seconds into the second half when the Rockets were able to get their second goal and effectively put the game away.

Streetsboro peppered Warrior goalie Will Weingart with shots all night but Weingart was up to the task stopping 14 of them and keeping his squad in the game.  Unfortunately, the Warriors didn’t have quite enough offensively and were unable to put mount much of an attack on the Rockets end.

The season comes to an end, but it was a season that saw a lot of growth with only one senior on the squad.  The team finished the year winning seven of its last nine games including a six game winning streak.
