DRAGON FALL SHORT AGAINST HILLTOPPERS

Painesville, OH- The Lakeside Dragons faced off against the Chardon Hilltoppers in a high-energy boys basketball game at Harvey High School in Painesville, OH. Despite a valiant effort from the Dragons, Chardon proved too strong, securing an 85-62 victory.

First Half: Chardon Takes Control Early

The game got off to a fast start, with Chardon quickly jumping out to a commanding lead. The Hilltoppers dominated the opening quarter, putting up 23 points to Lakeside’s 14. Chardon’s high-powered offense continued to shine in the second quarter, outscoring the Dragons 19-12. By halftime, Lakeside found themselves in a 42-26 hole.

Second Half: Chardon Extends Lead

Coming out of the break, Lakeside showed more fight, especially in the third quarter where they posted their highest scoring output of the game with 20 points. However, Chardon’s offense remained relentless, putting up 28 points in the third to stretch their lead even further. With the Hilltoppers leading by 24 heading into the final quarter, the game was effectively out of reach.

The fourth quarter saw the Dragons continue to battle, scoring 16 points to Chardon’s 15, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit. The final buzzer sounded with the Hilltoppers securing an 85-62 win.

Standout Performances

Lakeside’s Jarez Osborne was the standout player of the game, putting up an impressive 40 points in the losing effort. His scoring was a bright spot for the Dragons, as he demonstrated his ability to drive to the basket and hit from the outside. Jason Lopez added 8 points, while Augie Puglise chipped in 5.

For Chardon, it was a balanced offensive attack led by Galfidi, who finished with 23 points. Fawcett was also a key contributor, scoring 20 points, while Allgood added 12. The Hilltoppers’ depth was on full display, with five players scoring in double digits.

Looking Ahead

While the loss was disappointing for the Dragons, their ability to compete, particularly in the second half, shows promise as they continue to develop throughout the season. Lakeside will look to regroup and improve as they head into the next stretch of games.

The Hilltoppers, on the other hand, will be pleased with their offensive performance and their ability to control the game from start to finish.

BOARDMAN CLIMBS OVER HILLTOPPERS

CHARDON, OH-The Boardman Spartans cruised past Chardon with a commanding 11-1 win on Monday at Chardon High School.

The Spartans kicked things off in the first inning when Tyler Kirlik cracked a double to bring a runner home. Chardon managed to even the score at one-all in the third, capitalizing on a rare error by the Spartans.

The game really swung in Boardman’s favor in the fourth inning with a barrage of seven hits leading to five runs. Ben Herrmann delivered the key hit, a double that cleared the bases for two crucial runs, pushing the lead to 6-1.

Collin Resetar was stellar on the mound, clinching the win for Boardman by holding Chardon to just two hits and one unearned run across five innings, notching five strikeouts. Austin Leszynski shouldered the loss after yielding six runs over four innings. Ryan Neifer wrapped things up nicely for Boardman, throwing two hitless innings in relief.

At the plate, Boardman was unstoppable, amassing 20 hits. Herrmann, Kirlik, and Grayson Eicher led the charge, each bagging three hits. Key contributions came from Charlie Young, Kirlik, Herrmann, and Zach Ganser, each knocking in two runs. Ryan Conti, Landon Whippo, and Marty Stachowicz also had a multi-hit day, helping to keep the pressure on Chardon.

Next, the Spartans head to Marlington to face the Diamond Dukes on Tuesday, riding high from their big win.

HILLTOPPERS GROUND GAME TOO MUCH FOR IRISH

Ravenna, OH- In a highly anticipated matchup between 2 powerhouse programs, the Ursuline Fighting Irish faced off against the Chardon Hilltoppers in a Division 3 matchup that ultimately ended in a 31-14 victory for Chardon.

The first quarter set the tone as Vinny Columbi’s 5-yard touchdown run capped a 70-yard drive, putting Chardon ahead 7-0. Ursuline quickly responded with Joe Balog’s 5-yard TD run, tying the game at 7-7 with 2:42 left in the quarter.

Chardon seized an opportunity in the second quarter, recovering a fumble at Ursuline’s 24-yard line. AJ Bruce’s 13-yard carry set up Vinny Columbi’s 1-yard TD run, giving Chardon a 14-7 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw Chardon extend their lead with Sam Sacerich’s 27-yard field goal, making it 17-7. However, Ursuline fought back, with Jack Ericson connecting with DC Ferrell on a 13-yard TD pass to narrow the gap to 17-14.

As the game entered the fourth quarter, Chardon continued to press their advantage. Caleb Hewitt’s 34-yard TD run extended their lead to 24-14. Ursuline, facing a crucial drive from their own 35, stalled at the Chardon 38, turning the ball over on downs with 9:45 remaining.

Chardon capitalized on the opportunity, as AJ Bruce’s 13-yard TD run sealed the victory with a final score of 31-14. Ursuline’s attempt to mount a comeback ended with a sack of Ericson on 4th down at the Chardon 33, sealing their fate.

With this loss, the Ursuline Fighting Irish concluded their season with a record of 13-1, while the Chardon Hilltoppers (11-3) advanced to the Division 3 state semi-final against the Toledo Central Catholic Fighting Irish in week 14.

A STONE COLD MASON MAKES MARLINGTON GREAT

CANFIELD OH- In day number two of the fifth annual South Range Holiday Hoops Classic, The Marlington Dukes returned to faceoff with a new foe. After emerging victorious in a blowout win against Austintown-Fitch on Wednesday, The Dukes would play as the home team in a matchup with The Chardon Hilltoppers. In what would be the first and only home for The Hilltoppers in The Holiday Hoops Classic. 

Chardon came in with a 3-4 record, looking to complete an upset win over a 6-1 Marlington team. Well Elizabeth Mason had different plans, scoring 16 of her team’s 18 points in the first quarter, Mason would continue her dominance, finishing with 23 points after the first half! Chardon was playing a good brand of defense that was forcing turnovers; however, Marlington was able to match that energy and counter their turnover by creating some of their own against The Hilltoppers. 

Marlington wasted no time in the second half, continuing their run of dominance to get the running clock by the start of the fourth quarter. Elizabeth Mason finished with 32 points in her Player of The Game Performance, as The Dukes emerged victorious in both of their games at South Range. The loss will send The Hilltoppers to 3-5 on their season, while Marlington improves to 7-1 through their first eight contests. 

Both The Hilltopers and The Dukes will return to action in January to start off The New Year. The Dukes will host The Carrollton Warriors on Wednesday, January 4th. On the other side, The Hilltoppers will try their luck with  Cornerstone Christian, where they will hit the road to do battle with The Patriots on Monday, January 2nd.

FITCH CLINCHES ADVANCEMENT PAST CHARDON

CHARDON OH- Austintown Fitch had to hit the road on Tuesday to open up tournament play. As the 27 seed they found themselves squared up with the 22nd seeded Chardon Hilltoppers. Seedings didn’t matter to the Falcons though as they came out with a 4-1 victory on the road. It was the Falcons 5th win of the season.

Stats will be updated when made available. Fitch advances to the sectional final where they’ll duel with 5th seeded Massillon Jackson. That game will take place at Jackson on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7:00. The winner will advance to the district semifinals.

LATE BURST TOO MUCH FOR LEOPARDS TO OVERCOME

CANTON OH-  Louisville lost the lead late in a 7-3 defeat to Chardon in the regional finals on Friday. Chardon  trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Nolan Kirsh singled on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs.

In the first inning, Louisville got their offense started when Connor Adelman grounded out, scoring one run.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Leopards tied things up at two. Andrew Corona grounded out, scoring one run.

Kirsh got the win for the Hilltoppers. The pitcher lasted five innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out six. Fatur threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Connor Morley took the loss for Louisville. The pitcher went four and a third innings, allowing seven runs on six hits and striking out one.

Louisville saw the ball well today, racking up six hits in the game. JT Popick and Caleb Miller each collected multiple hits. Miller and Popick each collected two hits to lead.

Will Francis went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Chardon in hits. The Hilltoppers were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Jake Barker had the most chances in the field with nine.

Louisville sees their historic season end with a record of 22-10. They made their first regional final since 1988.  Congratulations to the Leopards on an amazing season.

NILES FALLS SHORT IN TITLE GAME

STRUTHERS OH-  Niles came in to Wednesdays district championship riding high after their win over top seeded Canfield. However, they couldn’t ride that momentum to victory, as Chardon spoiled the party winning the championship 10-0.

Chardon fired up the offense in the first inning. Heath Fetchik’s sac fly scored one run.

Chardon scored four runs in the fourth inning. Their offense in the inning was led by Jake Barker, Stone Fawcett, and Leo Colombi, who each had RBIs in the inning.

A single by Michael Guarnieri in the first inning was a positive for Niles. They struggled to get the offense going totaling in just 4 hits on the day.

Kirsh earned the win for Chardon. Kirsh allowed four hits and zero runs over six innings, striking out seven.

Sam Perrone took the loss for Niles. The pitcher surrendered two runs on two hits over one inning, walking zero.

The Hilltoppers racked up 12 hits. Barker, Fawcett, Kyle Maronde, and Christian Hall all managed multiple hits. Fawcett and Barker each collected three hits to lead.

OGDEN BLASTS THREE BOMBS IN IRISH DISMANTLING OF CHARDON

WELLINGTON OH-  Paige Ogden gave Chardon fits, as she bagged four hits in Ursuline’s 14-3 victory on Saturday. Ogden homered in the first, homered in the third, singled in the fourth, and homered in the sixth.

Ursuline got things started in the first inning. Ogden homered on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.

The Irish notched seven runs in the sixth inning. Their big bats were led by Ogden, Savannah Patrone, Liza Barbato, Kyleigh Golden, and Ari Wendt, all knocking in runs in the inning.

Mia Opalick was credited with the victory for the Irish. The pitcher allowed five hits and two runs over five innings, striking out one. Barbato threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Amy O’Brien took the loss for Chardon. The pitcher lasted six innings, allowing 22 hits and 14 runs while striking out one.

Ursuline launched three home run on the day. Ogden went for the long ball in the first, third, and sixth innings.

Ursuline saw the ball well today, racking up 22 hits in the game. Ogden, Madelyn Miklandric, Barbato, Alyssa Sheely, Layni Bednar, Patrone, and Golden each had multiple hits. Ogden went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead in hits. The Irish didn’t commit a single error in the field. Barbato had the most chances in the field with four.

Madison Zombory led Chardon with two hits in three at bats. Chardon didn’t commit a single error in the field. Grace Legan had eight chances in the field, the most on the team.

BULLDOGS TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF EVERY OPPORTUNITY

POLAND OH- Poland put up five runs in the first on its way to a 7-1 victory over Chardon on Friday. Poland batters contributing to the big inning included Abby Farber, Leanne Williams, and Katie McDonald, who each had RBIs in the inning.

The Bulldogs fired up the offense in the first inning, when Farber grounded out, scoring one run.

McDonald took the win for Poland. The righthander lasted seven innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out seven.

Sydney Murray took the loss for Chardon. She allowed three hits and seven runs over two innings.

Poland tallied one home run on the day. McDonald went yard in the first inning.

Sophia D’Angelo, Williams, Farber, and McDonald all had one hit to lead the Bulldogs.

Grace Legan went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hilltoppers in hits.

CARDINALS HAND A BIG LOSS TO CHARDON

CANFIELD OH-  Senior Emily Wilson scored a hat trick with 3 goals leading the Lady Cardinals to a 9-o victory. Seniors Sarah Grohovsky and Elena Martin added 2 goals apiece, while fellow seniors Ally Wilson and Gwen Lolakiseach added 1 goal.

Goalies Karley D’Apolito held the Hilltoppers scoreless.

The Canfield Lady Cardinals face off against the Green Lady Bulldogs on Monday at 5:30pm at home in Bob Dove Stadium in Canfield.

Emily Wilson scores one of her three goals of the day.
