BOARDMAN SOCCER COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH DEREK PATTERSON

BOARDMAN, OH-  In this episode, we have a special guest, Derek Patterson, the girls soccer coach at Boardman High School. Derek is in his first year as coach and he joins us to talk about the impressive start to the season for the team.

We delve into the determination and grit of the hardworking girls on the team and how they have quickly come together as a family on the field. Derek shares his experience of getting to know and understand each player’s strengths and weaknesses to build a better team.

We also discuss the team’s recent victories and upcoming games against rival schools, Poland and Hoover. Join us as we learn more about the strategy, preparation, and the exciting dynamics of the game of soccer.

SPARTANS CLAMP DOWN DEFENSIVELY TO BEAT VIKINGS

BOARDMAN, OH- The Boardman Spartans hosted a division 1 opponent on Monday night in the North Canton Hoover Vikings. The Spartans had one of the best defensive games of the year to pick up an 18 point victory.

Boardman came out strong after losing three consecutive games. The Spartans held the Vikings to just 7 first quarter points while scoring 13. Boardman extended the lead to double digits at the half after Reagan Smith knocked down two three-pointers in the second quarter. Boardman went into the locker-room leading 25-15.

The Hoover Vikings had an early push in the third quarter, cutting the lead down to 4 points midway through the third. Head Coach Jeff Hammerton called a timeout, and the Spartans came out fired up scoring 8 consecutive points to lead by 12 late in the third quarter. Hoover made one more late push to cut the deficit to 7 points, trailing 36-29 at the end of the third. Boardman amped up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter and held the Vikings scoreless in the final quarter. The Spartans picked up a huge victory over North Canton Hoover, winning by a final of 47-29. The 29 points was the least amount of points that Hoover has scored all season long.

Junior point guard Mackenzie Riccitelli led the team scoring 12 points, with senior Gia Triveri right behind with 9 points. The Spartans improve to 11-8 on the season, and will host Harding on Saturday. Coach Hammerton sat down with our YSN crew after the game, here is what he had to say:

 

BOARDMAN AND HOOVER END SCORELESS

BOARDMAN OH-  The Lady Spartans were held by North Canton Hoover in a 0-0 draw at Spartan Stadium. Despite generating 14 shots, 5 on target, none of them were able to find the back of the net. The draw brings our record to 0-1-1.

Junior Sarah Blasco led the attack today with two shots just missing the mark.

Senior captain Rebekah Bader and sophomore Sarah Bero marshaled the defense in their first shut out of the season.

Junior captain Faith Walston recorded one save and gathered multiple crosses in her clean sheet.

The Lady Spartans will take the field again on Monday at home against South Range at 6pm.

SPARTANS STUMBLE IN HOME OPENER

BOARDMAN OH-  The Boardman varsity volleyball team fell to an offensive North Canton Hoover team in 3 sets during their home opener in BHS gymnasium. After trailing the first two sets, the Spartans brought life back into their offense, but ultimately it wasn’t enough to take down the Vikings.

Leading the charge for the Spartans was senior Cami Goske with 2 blocks and 2 kills. Senior Sydney Yauger had 2 kills and 4 digs. Senior Gia Triveri added 6 digs, 1 kill and 1 ace. Junior libero Gianna Cicchillo had 9 digs and an ace. Setters senior Kamryn Duritza and Junior Maddie Mraz each had 4 assists while Duritza added 6 digs. Junior Ava Bosjnak and junior MC Werth both contributed an ace and a kill. Sophomore Ava Commons has 4 digs and junior Jasmine Graham 5.

The Spartans will look for their first W against Garfield at home on Tuesday, August 23.

HOOVER PUTS A STOP TO FALCONS SEASON

AUSTINTOWN OH-

Austintown-Fitch fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 10-1 loss to North Canton Hoover on Wednesday. The Vikings took the lead on a double in the first inning by Lynae Foster.

The Falcons struggled to contain the high-powered offense of North Canton Hoover, giving up ten runs.

Hoover scored four runs in the fourth inning. The big inning came thanks to two RBI doubles and a single.

Sydnee Koosh got the win for North Canton Hoover. The ace lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out ten.

Lydia Spalding took the loss for Austintown-Fitch. The pitcher went three and a third innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits and striking out seven.

Caitlin Mitchell went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Falcons in hits.

North Canton Hoover collected 16 hits on the day. 4 hitters collected multiple hits.

HOOVER ENDS SPARTANS SEASON

AUSTINTOWN OH- It was a constant struggle on Monday for Boardman. They ran into a buzzsaw of a pitcher in Hoover’s Sydnee Koosh. Koosh is a Robert Morris signee. She proved her value with a 3 hit performance, beating Boardman 7-1.

Sophie Spellman got Hoover’s offense going in the 2nd inning with a RBI triple scoring Lynae Foster. The Vikings added 3 more runs in the third, highlighted by a RBI single from Koosh. Tess Bucher launched a home run in the 6th to give Hoover all the insurance they would need.

Samantha Hoffman went 2-3 at the plate for Boardman. Dana Haus got the Spartan’s 3rd hit. The Spartans scored in the 6th when Jenna Olexa reached on an error, and Sofia Hoffman scored.

Maddie Lester and Kat Ohoro combined to strike out 9 hitters in the circle. Ohoro pitched 3.2 innings in relief and gave up only 1 ER.

Boardman ends their season with a record of 18-10. Hoover will advance to play Fitch on Wednesday in the District Championship.
