POMPELIA NAMED 2022 YSN GIRLS BASKETBALL MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

EAST PALESTINE, OH- Howland’s Alyssa Pompelia has been named 2022 Your Sports Network Girls Basketball Most Valuable Player according to the media company.

Pompelia was an integral piece of the Tigers during her senior campaign, helping Howland to a 19-7 record through a very challenging schedule.  During this season, Pompelia averaged 15.4 points per game and could take over a game at the drop of a hat.  Her skill set allowed her to score points at will, but her leadership and Basketball IQ showcased talents in the assist category, as well as her tenacity to pull down rebounds to give her team second opportunities at a bucket throughout the season.

Pompelia was selected as a Special mention on the All-Ohio team, and First Team All-District in Division I, and has garnered MVPs of each All-Star Game she’s played in 2022.

We congratulate Alyssa Pompelia on a phenomenal season, and career at Howland, as well as being chosen as the 2022 YSN Most Valuable Player in Girls Basketball.

TIGERS STILL ON THE PROWL

Contributed By Noah Ricks

ASHTABULA, OH – Howland coach Dan Bubon has been preparing his boys for this kind of moment. His team came into their district semifinal matchup with Ursuline coming off of a come-from-behind victory at Struthers in the Sectional Finals. They would have to do those kinds of heroics again against the Fighting Irish. Being down 47-40 at the end of the third, the Tigers would play a tremendous 19-3 fourth quarter, including an 8-0 stretch in the final minutes, to shock #8 seeded Ursuline 59-50 at Ashtabula Lakeside. Bubon tried to recall the situation in the final minutes, as emotions were high following the thrilling victory.

“I wish I could remember it right now. I know we were up one and we were holding the ball to get fouled. We got to the foul line, went up three, fouled them and they missed, I remember that sequence, and then we didn’t turn the ball over and kept getting to the foul line. Connor [Durig] got a breakout and a layup there at the end. This game just felt like who was going to make the last run and we made it at exactly the right time. If there were five minutes left in the game, they probably would have made another run right back at us.”

Bubon paid attention to the Howland miscues in the first three quarters that got them into the seven-point hole after 24 minutes. They were set back in the third with turnovers off of hard passes, some missed foul shots and missed bunnies underneath the basket. They also had their best scorer in senior Anthony Massucci held out cold, as he finished with single-digits at 9. Despite this, Bubon reminded his players not to get too excited as this was familiar territory for them.

“We’ve been there before. We were down 10 at half at Struthers in our last game. Our schedule is so tough. You’re going to get down sometimes. That’s what our schedule has done for us is that we don’t panic. Going into the fourth, they were a little bit down coming and I said we’re only down seven. Let’s get a basket. Let’s get a basket and play defense and that’s how it started. We got a basket, we got a stop, and all of a sudden, we’re right back in the game.’’

A player for Howland would have to step up to the plate in support of Massucci and that would be Ben Bronson. Coming in at 5.7 points a game, he had the best game of his junior season, finishing with 17 points. His performance was highlighted by great finishes and shooting, especially from downtown. Bubon really appreciated how Bronson came into his own in a vital tournament game.

“Ben was great. Ben’s been staying after practice the last couple of weeks and shooting, shooting, shooting, shooting, and he’s just getting more confidence in his shot. We told all of the other kids you’re going to have to make shots. They were going to try to take Anthony away just the same way we were trying to take [Terrance] Pankey away, and what team was going to have other guys hit enough shots.”

Most importantly, the end of the game was summed up by fouls and free throws. The 8-0 stretch was possible due to the Tigers taking advantage of the double bonus caused by Ursuline, with one foul being called as a flagrant. With six Tiger players averaging over 70% on foul shots over five attempts, they would make Ursuline pay as players like Connor Durig, Alex Henry, and Bobby Sullivan hit clutch free throws to seal the victory. They would then grab a rebound as the visitors’ side erupted.

The Tigers improve to 15-9 with the victory. With Louisville beating Canton South 49-48 down at GlenOak, Howland is set for a date with the Leopards on Friday night in the Division 2 District Finals at Lakeside. That game will be a rematch from a mid-season matchup that the Tigers won 71-65 back on January 11th. This will be Howland’s first trip to the District Title game since 2004 as Bubon and his team seek their first district championship in program history.

“Unfortunately, we only have one day. That kind of stinks. I don’t like the way they do this. I wish we had at least two days to prepare, but, from what I’ve heard, we do have Louisville. I think they won by one against Canton South, so at least it’s somebody we know. If it was Canton South, that is literally someone we have never played and never seen, so a little easier when you know someone, but a lot harder because they’re a really good team. We played tremendous and beat them the first time. That’s probably the best we’ve played all year, and we’re going to need that again on Friday.”

Ursuline ends the season at 17-9 with the loss. Vinny Flauto led the Irish with 17 points. This will be the second time in three years that Ursuline will fall short in the district semifinals. There will be some experience coming back for the Fighting Irish, however. Losing only three seniors to graduation after this year, coach Keith Gunther will now focus on the offseason in hopes of winning Ursuline’s first district championship since 2017.

POLAR BEARS PUT A STOP TO THE TIGERS RUN

MASSILLON OH- Howland came into Tuesday’s district semifinal with all the confidence in the world. They got to this game by beating league rival Canfield for the second time of the season. Standing in their way of a trip to the district championship was the Polar Bears of Massillon Jackson. Two big Polar Bear runs weee the difference as Jackson knocked out the Tigers with a 64-30 win.

The first Polar Bear run came in the first quarter, and leaked into the second. After the game started back and forth, the Polar Bears turned a 7-6 lead into a 19-6 one in the blink of an eye. The Tigers responded by winning the second quarter overall 13-10 and taking a 29-19 deficit into the locker room.

The Tigers came out of the locker room and scored quick to make it a 29-21 game. That however would be their only points from the floor in the frame as the Polar Bears won the third 30-3 and pretty much put the game away.

Senior Taylor Lawrence led the Tigers getting in double figures with 11. Alyssa Massucci finished with 7.

The Tigers finish the season 18-7 and AAC champions. We at YSN want to congratulate the Tigers on an incredible season! Thank you for bringing us on the ride!

HOWLAND COOLS OFF THE VIKINGS

Contributed By Noah Ricks

LEAVITTSBURG, OH – It was a Monday night out in Leavittsburg. Both Howland and LaBrae picked up first-round byes in their respective tournaments. This was the last regular season game for both squads. It was Howland, however, who would have the upper edge as the D2 school upended the D3 Vikings 56-38 on the road. Howland coach Dan Bubon enjoyed the fact that his team picked up a convincing 18-point victory over a respected area powerhouse like LaBrae.

“It’s a big win going into the tournament because we beat a really good program tonight. In the last 15 to 20 years, this is one of the best programs in the area. We knew we were going to be in for a fight tonight, and I’m really happy with the second half. Anytime you come here and win by double-digits, that’s a really good win going into the tournament.”

The Tigers would not be without their struggles in the first half, being down 12-4 at one point in the first quarter, but they kept themselves in the ball game thanks to key finishes down low and transition points off of turnovers. Despite some missed layups at some points in the contest, they put the ball in the hole when it mattered. They would keep the Vikings, who were playing their fourth game in six days, on their toes throughout that second half. Bubon was aware of his team’s mistakes, but was pleased with the adjustments.

“We finished inside better, but we still missed three or four layups in the second half. I thought we got some good looks in the first half and just missed and then had some careless turnovers, couldn’t get into a rhythm, but the defense is what did it. Anytime you hold a team like that to 38 points, you’re giving yourself opportunities to transition off of rebounds, off of steals, and that’s where we started to get some easy passes.’’

After Anthony Massucci made a three-pointer in the final seconds of the first half to tie the game up at 23-23, the Tigers went roaring from there. Thanks to guys like Massucci, Gabe Badea, and Alex Henry, they outscored the Vikings in the second half 33-15. Massucci, who went on a 12-point run in the fourth after being held to just three points in the first three quarters, would end the night with a triple-double with 15 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 assists. Bubon used the locker room adjustments to his advantage and thanked his defense for the big run in the final sixteen minutes.

“Just to relax on offense. Keep playing defense as hard as they were. At halftime, we were on our way to holding them to 46 points, and we ended up holding them to 38 points. If you do that, you have got a great chance to win. We played a bad half offensively. We thought if we relaxed and played our normal game, we would be ok.”

The Tigers end the regular season at 13-9 with the victory. They will have a first-round bye in the Division 2 Ashtabula District before playing in the Sectional Finals on Friday against the winner of the Struther-NDCL semi-final tomorrow night. Bubon and his team will head down to the Struthers Fieldhouse tomorrow night to scout and prepare.

“Well, we’re going to go watch the game tomorrow night at Struthers and see who wins. We have seen Struthers multiple times this year. We scrimmaged them. They’re a really good offensive team. They’ll be a great challenge, but NDCL, I’m sure they have a chance, because NDCL will come out of Cleveland and play a really tough schedule. They’re not going to roll over tomorrow night, so I’m sure it will be a good battle and we’ll see who we’ll play and go from there.”

Canfield ends the regular season at 15-5 with the loss. They will also have a first-round bye as they will host a Sectional Final on Friday against the winner of the Southeast-Waterloo semi-final. That game is part of the Division 3 Howland District and is slated for a 7:00 P>M. tip.
