SOUTHERN MAKES MOVES INSIDE THE CONFERENCE

INDIANS START FAST IN THE NE8

By Matt Maher

Girard, OH – What a way for Girard to open up conference play against South Rnage! Coming off of a 47-21 victory over Jefferson, Girard kept the momentum going with another big win, putting up 34 points to South Ranges 19.

The first quarter saw Girard score first but South Range looked confident and found a 6-4 lead early on. It would take one timeout for Girard to figure out what needed to be done and would respond with eight more points and lead the quarter 12-6. Mia Malito found her first four points of the game as did Mackenzee White. Gwen Lowry would lead The Raiders with four points in the quarter.

Girards offense stayed consistent in the second putting up eight combined but the real story of the quarter was The Indians defense! Everyone found themselves involved in suppressing the Raiders offense and forcing them to take less than desirable shots. As a result of this brick wall defense The Raiders would only find two points in the quarter scored by Sophia Lucente. The Indians would also have a lone scorer but that was enough as Malito would catch fire and scorch her way to eight points.

The third was almost identical to the second, great defensive coverage from the Indians led to only three points, a field goal for Lucente and one of two free throws made by Devin Sauerwein. Offense for Girard yielded better results as Malito was not the lone scorer this time, although she did find herself with six more points, White would connect for a 2-pointer and Ally Gassman would put in a bucket accompanied by a foul where she would complete the three point play at the line.

South Range entered the fourth quarter looking like a team down 31-11 but after a series of timeouts from both sides the Raiders would start to click and found themselves in their highest scoring quarter of the night. Sydney Penick was able to find four points and Ceci Foster got herself on the board with two. Along with two free throws made by different player the Raiders would find themselves eight points in the quarter and looked like they could’ve found more if they hadn’t found their second wind so late. The Raiders defense also showed up in a huge way by only allowing three points which were scored off of the only made 3-pointer of the night courtesy of Caylee Wilkes.

While South Range found a surge of energy in the fourth they still had to face a very confident Girard defense and as a result would go on to lose 34-19 to the Indians. Mia Malito would lead all scorers with 18 points on the night while Mackenzee White would finish with six and both Wilkes and Gassman would find five. The Raiders were led by Sydney Penick with six points and Gwen Lowry with five. The Raiders move to 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in the Northeast 8 and are back in action on December 14th when they host Struthers at 6:15PM and The Indians move to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference and will travel to Poland on December 14th, that game tips off at 7PM.

GIRARD BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH CRAIG HANNON

By Ty Bartell

GIRARD OH-There are plenty of fun basketball conferences to choose from this season, most of which
should be competitive with a few teams in the running. However, none might be as wide open as The Northeast 8 (NE8) this year. Typically featuring multiple talented teams’ hoops season on the boys side, multiple teams feel that they are in the running for the top spot of the conference. One of those teams, surprisingly, flying under the radar are The Girard Indians! Although losing a good senior class from a season ago, The Indians are still coming off a 16-8 year where they were shared the top spot in the conference when all was said and done.

With plenty of returners that experienced the second place taste last year, you can believe that Girard will be motivated this season! YSNs Ty Bartell got the opportunity to chat with the skipper at Girard, Head Coach Craig Hannon about this season. Featuring topics like impact players this season, being the “grandfather” of the NE8, the keys to competing for conference and much more! Do not miss this edition of Coaches Corner and do not miss a second of Girard basketball this season with live games, scores, stats, stories and more on YSN!

Despite the defeat, Southern showcased a standout performance from Markell Smith, who tallied an impressive 34 points, securing the game-high total for the night.

TIGERS ON THE PROWL

By Matt Maher

GIRARD, OHIO – What a night to be a tiger because Newton Falls pounced at the opportunity to get win number one Tuesday night against Girard and boy did they win. Newton Falls, or “The Falls” as their bright orange jerseys read, outscored the Indians in all but one quarter and never looked out of place in their 47 to 26 victory.

Newton Falls came out ready to play in the first quarter by putting up an impressive 16 points. Carson Howard led the quarter with five points including a two pointer and a solid three and Landon Mcgregor found himself the benefactor of an and one after getting fouled driving for the net. Girard only found six points and all of them came from a different source, Anthony Bengala, Allen Hess-Cardona and Chris Cardiero all put up two.

The Tigers kept up their dominant play with 15 more points in the second. Jabriel Rufai found four points this quarter with a two and a much harder to find three point attempt from the line where he nailed the first two shots. Girard was led by Chris Cardiero who shot a beautiful three and went two for two from the line. Three players ended with seven points in the first half: Jabriel Rufai and Carson Howard from The Falls and Chris Cardiero from Girard.

Girard found a much better defensive game in the third limiting the Tigers to only eight points in the quarter and found more offense by putting up nine points of their own! The Indians saw Domenico Simone find some rhythm by scoring four points including a three and one of two free throws. Newton Falls Thomas Ainsworth get on the board by scoring a gritty 2 from in the paint and making one of three free throw attempts.

Newton Falls showed a similar performance in the fourth as we saw in the third by yet again finding eight points but their defense looked powerful as they only allowed Girard to find three points in the final frame. Landon Mcgregor would go two for two at the line and finish his night three for three and Ainsworth scored three more points as well. Chris Cardiero would be the only Indian to score by putting up a three.

While the Indians showed heart in the second half it would be the Tigers dominant first half that would propel them over Girard. Newton Falls ended up being led by Cameron Huff with nine points thanks to three made three pointers. Girard was led by Chris Cardiero who ended with seven points. The Tigers move to 1-1 on the season and travel to Liberty next on Tuesday December 12th at 7PM while the Indians start their season 0-1 and will face Hickory from Hermitage Pennsylvania on Saturday December 9th at 12PM.

CRESTVIEW EARNS ANOTHER HUGE ROAD WIN

By Matt Maher

GIRARD, OHIO – Dominant is spelled G.A.S.K.I.N.S. At least that’s how the Rebels see it because Luvrain Gaskins put up 29 points and played some of the best defense on the team to help Crestview cruise into a 53 to 40 victory over the Indians.

It all began, as every game does, in the first quarter where Girard found themselves up on top 3-0 thanks to a bucket and foul combo by Caylee Wilkes. The lead didn’t last long, however, because Crestview responded with five points of their own and would finish the quarter on top 10-7 thanks to two buckets in the paint by Gaskins.

The second quarter saw an explosion in rebels scoring as they put up 20 points to Girards 10. Gaskins really showed her dominance under the hoop as she found an abundance of rebounds and scored on a good handful of them helping her pick up 12 more points in the quarter. Brianna DiCross also showed up big time on defense causing multiple turnovers and was an all around headache for Girard.

The third period saw Girard commit multiple fouls with the first two being in the act of shooting. Gaskins was one of two players to head to the line in the quarter having a total of four shots and nailing three of them, pair that with her early 2 point bucket that opened up scoring for the half and add five more points to her total. Girard only found eight points in the third and trailed 39-25 going into the final frame.

Quarter four was Girards best when it came to scoring since they found a combined 15 points including 3 twos for Makenzie White as well as an impressive three pointer by Caylee Wilkes. Despite Girards offense finding a productive quarter, Crestview didn’t lay down and found 14 more points including eight more by Gaskins and a nice pair of made free throws by Addison Rhodes.

The Rebels went on to win 53 to 40 over the Indians and the big reason was Luvrain Gaskins who paired up very well defending against Makenzee White and was Johnny on the spot under the hoop to gather rebounds and clean up messes even if she had to do it herself.

The Rebels continue their road trip as they visit Liberty on Thursday December 12th with a start time of 5:30 PM scheduled. Girard will remain at home when they host Jefferson on Saturday December 9th with a tip set for 2:30 PM.

SOUTHERN SURVIVES A SCARE BY THE BEARS

SALINEVILLE OH- Southern kicked off the new basketball season with an intense EOAC battle against Leetonia, securing a hard-fought victory with a final score of 67-65. Despite the Bears facing challenges in the league the previous season, they presented a formidable challenge for Southern, making the contest a closely contested affair.

Markell Smith led Southern’s scoring effort with 17 points, complemented by contributions from Noah Chase with 13 points, Mason Pitts adding 11 points, Yago Alonso chipping in 9 points, and Jacob McCurdy with 7 points. The collective effort showcased Southern’s ability to respond to challenges and secure a crucial win.

Leetonia, led by Carson Brock’s impressive game-high 29 points, demonstrated resilience throughout the game. CJ Faulkner contributed 17 points, and Ashbee Merritt added 6 points. The spirited competition between Southern and Leetonia highlighted the competitive nature of the EOAC.

Southern’s ability to withstand the Bears’ challenge sets a positive tone for the new season. As they navigate the basketball campaign, the team looks to build on this hard-fought victory.

RAMS DEFENSE GETS THEM THROUGH

Looking ahead, the Lady Rams will continue their season with a game at Orange this Saturday. Girard, on the other hand, will return to action on Monday as they host Crestview, aiming to rebound from the closely contested matchup.

LABRAE KEEPS WINNING FORM

LEAVITTSBURG OH- Staying true to their winning form, LaBrae secured their second consecutive victory with a resilient performance, defeating Girard 57-49 in a hard-fought contest.

Ella Kuszmaul led the scoring charge for LaBrae with an impressive 17 points, supported by Riley Rowe with 13 points, Angel Scruggs with 11 points, and Mariah Jones with 9 points.

Girard’s Mackenzie White claimed the game-high scoring title with 18 points, showcasing her offensive prowess. Mia Malito contributed 13 points, while Ally Gassman added 10 points in a commendable effort.

The competitive matchup displayed the determination of both teams, but LaBrae’s consistency and collective effort ultimately secured them the win. As LaBrae celebrates their back-to-back victories, Girard will strive to bounce back.
