IRISH CREATE ISSUES FOR COLUMBIANA

YOUNGSTOWN OH-  Thomas Kosovan was dealing Monday at Cene Park, mowing down 11 hitters and tossing a three-hit shutout as Ursuline rolled past Columbiana 10-0. Kosovan  didn’t walk a single batter over his six innings of work, just pure command and domination.

The Irish came out swinging, dropping seven runs in the first to set the tone. Rowan Urbach walked in a run, Luke Kollar ripped a double to drive one home, another run scored on a play at the plate, Luke Stroney and Joe Balog each knocked in a run with singles, and CJ Snyder capped it off with a two-run single. Ursuline added another run in the third when a passed ball brought a runner across.

Reese Roush took the loss for Columbiana, lasting just two-thirds of an inning after getting hit for seven runs on five hits.

Ursuline piled up 13 hits on the day. Jake Bednar, Stroney, and Snyder each had a pair of knocks, with Snyder leading the charge with two RBIs. The Irish were aggressive on the bases too, swiping five bags, with AJ Snyder picking up two of them. They also turned a double play defensively to keep Columbiana quiet.

Columbiana managed just three hits, one each from Hunter Davanzo, Max Conway, and Zane Strohecker, and turned a double play of their own, but it wasn’t nearly enough. Next up, Ursuline heads to Harding on Tuesday, while Columbiana gets back to league action Wednesday against Leetonia.

RAIDERS WALK OFF THEIR WAY TO THE BEACH

CANFIELD OH- South Range pulled off some late-inning magic on Wednesday, walking off Ursuline 7-6 in a wild one. Down 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, the Raiders needed a hero — and Julian Tranovich delivered, ripping a single to bring home two and send everyone home happy.

Gavin Hiscox stayed locked in at the plate, going 3-for-4 with singles in the second, fifth, and seventh to keep the offense moving.

South Range got on the board early with a Brennen Klasovsky RBI knock in the first. Ursuline answered big in the second, grabbing a 3-1 lead after a two-run single and an error.

But the Raiders punched right back. In the bottom half of the second, an error opened the door for one run, Gaven Nagy slapped an RBI single, and Hiscox dropped a two-run single to flip the game back in South Range’s favor at 5-3.

Ursuline wouldn’t go away, though. They took the lead again in the fifth thanks to a two-run double and another Raider miscue to make it 6-5.

Shaun Updegraff shut the door for South Range, tossing three innings of two-hit, shutout ball to earn the win. Tranovich started on the hill, giving the Raiders four gritty innings before handing it off. Joe Balog took the loss for Ursuline after battling through six and a third.

The Raiders finished with 11 hits on the day. Lincoln Cleevely and Klasovsky each had multi-hit games to help set the table. South Range also turned a double play to help keep things close.

For Ursuline, Jake Bednar, Rowan Urbach, and Thomas Kosovan each had a hit, with Urbach and Kosovan driving in a pair apiece. Ursuline made things interesting on the bases too, swiping five bags. Next up, the Raiders are heading south — Myrtle Beach bound — where they’ll kick things off against Greenfield on Monday.

URSULINE DOMINATES THE HOLY WAR

YOUNGSTOWN OH-  Emma Davies was untouchable in the circle Wednesday, racking up 12 punchouts to lead Ursuline to a 19-1 rout of rival Cardinal Mooney. The right-hander gave up just two hits and one run across five innings, keeping Mooney off balance all game long while issuing only three walks.

Mooney actually struck first—Angela Betura ripped a triple in the top of the first and came around to score—but that would be the lone bright spot for the Cards. Ursuline wasted no time flipping the script in the bottom half, scoring on a mix of walks, errors, and a rocket triple down the right field line by Katie Koulianos.

The Irish opened the floodgates from there. Five runs came home in the second thanks to clutch swings from Eva Camuso, Mackenzie Smith, and Brooke O’palick. Then came the third, where Ursuline dropped seven more—Katelyn Kennedy, Adyson Wendt, Davies, and Brooke Burton all came through with big knocks.

Wendt and Davies each drove in three, Burton finished with a pair of RBIs and led the team with two hits. O’palick was a magnet for pitches, drawing three walks and scoring a couple of runs. In total, Ursuline worked 12 free passes and swiped four bags.

Mooney’s Giada Desantis battled in the circle but couldn’t slow the bleeding, giving up nine hits and 18 runs (15 earned) over three innings. Betura and Gracie Rinaldi each had a hit for Mooney, with Betura driving in their only run. Ursuline now shifts focus to a road test Monday at Perry.

BLUE JAYS DRAIN THE IRISH LUCK

NORTH JACKSON OH- Jackson-Milton took care of business on Monday, knocking off Ursuline 8-4 behind a fast start and a steady outing in the circle from Katie Byers.

The Blue Jays wasted no time getting on the board, plating four runs in the bottom of the first. Grace Johns drove one in with a lineout, Brena McBeth followed with an RBI single, Charly Estes ripped a double down the line for another, and Gabby Kerr brought home one more on a fielder’s choice.

They added on in the second with help from a bases-loaded walk by Byers and another RBI single from Kerr to stretch the lead.

Byers went the distance in the circle, scattering six hits and giving up just two earned runs over seven innings. She walked five and struck out one, but kept Ursuline off balance just enough to keep the lead intact.

Kerr led the way with two RBIs, and Byers helped herself at the plate with a 2-for-3 night. Jackson-Milton showed patience at the dish, working seven walks—Johns and Ivy McBeth each drawing two. McBeth and Emma Johns also swiped multiple bags as the Blue Jays ran wild with four steals total.

For Ursuline, Davies finished 2-for-4, while Opalick, Zamaria, and Smith each knocked in a run. The Irish drew five walks, but couldn’t dig out of the early hole. Jackson-Milton now sets its sights on a road trip to Columbiana on Wednesday.

CARDS STAND UP TO STRIKE OUT CANCER

By Ty Bartell

CANFIELD, Ohio — The Canfield Cardinals (7-0-1) opened their Strike Out Cancer Tournament at McCune Park with a commanding 11-1 win over the Ursuline Irish (1-7) on Saturday afternoon.

Canfield’s offense was relentless, collecting 10 hits and scoring in four of the five innings played. Caylee Ortiz powered the Cardinals at the plate and in the circle, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs while also pitching a complete game. She allowed just two hits and one earned run, striking out four without issuing a walk in five innings of work.

Sami Economous reached base in all three of her plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with a double, a single, a walk and an RBI. Alexis Johnson added a pair of singles and drove in two runs, while Leah Figueroa contributed an RBI single and a walk, totaling two RBIs.  Jenna Triveri, Marina Koenig and Sofia Castronova each added a hit to round out the Canfield offensive effort.

Ursuline managed a run in the third inning behind singles from Emma Davies and Brooke Burton, with Burton picking up the lone RBI for the Irish.

Canfield will return to All-American Conference action on Monday, April 14, when they travel to Austintown to face the Fitch Falcons (8-1). Ursuline is scheduled to visit Jackson-Milton (6-1).

MOONEY TAKES CONTROL OF THE HOLY WAR

STRUTHERS OH- Cardinal Mooney locked in and blanked Ursuline 2-0 on Wednesday, riding a tag-team shutout from Ben Oddis and Ford Stacy.

It was a straight-up pitcher’s duel for most of the night. Mooney’s arms racked up 13 punchouts, while Ursuline’s staff held their own with five Ks.

The scoreboard stayed quiet until the ninth, when Will Petty ripped a double down the line and a miscue in the field helped bring two across. That was all Mooney needed.

Stacy slammed the door shut in the final two frames, picking up the W with two strikeouts and just one hit allowed. Oddis was lights-out through seven, giving up only one hit and fanning 11.

At the plate, Mooney scattered nine hits. Kaden Reese, Vince Gentile, and Ryan Reese each had a pair. Petty went 1-for-4 but delivered the go-ahead RBI.

Clean defense backed it all up—no errors, one twin killing, and Trent Litman handled 13 chances without a slip.

Ursuline managed just two knocks, one each from AJ and CJ Snyder. Joe Balog gave them some life on the basepaths with a pair of steals, and the Irish swiped four total.

Mooney’s got Austintown-Fitch next on the docket Thursday. Ursuline looks to bounce back Friday night when they host Lake.

IRISH BREAK THROUGH LATE IN THE GAME

HUBBARD OH- Ursuline built a comfy six-run lead heading into the late innings Monday, then held off a late Hubbard push to lock up an 8-6 win.

The Irish came out swinging in the first, stringing together a couple of base knocks to jump on the board. Marc DelliQuadri delivered the big hit, driving in two with a single to get things rolling.

They kept it going in the third—CJ Snyder ripped a double to center to plate another run, and Joe Balog added to the lead with a sac liner. Just like that, Ursuline was in control.

Thomas Kosovan picked up the win on the hill, going 4.1 innings and working around five hits and six walks while striking out five. AJ Snyder came in late to shut the door and snag the save.

DelliQuadri led the offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Snyder and Antonio Rutland also chipped in with two hits apiece. The Irish worked the count well, drawing seven walks, with Balog picking up three of them. Luke Kollar added some pressure on the bases, swiping two bags. The defense came up big too, turning a pair of double plays.

Hubbard didn’t go quietly. Down six in the later innings, the Eagles clawed back with some help from a single, a double, an error, and a double play that snuck a run across. Braydon Songer was locked in at the top of the order, going 3-for-4, while Geno Leshnack reached base twice on walks. Hubbard showed patience at the dish, drawing nine walks in total, but just couldn’t finish the rally. Ursuline will look to keep it rolling Wednesday when they take on rival Cardinal Mooney.

HUBBARD’S OFFENSE IS HUMMING

HUBBARD OH- Hubbard and Ursuline traded haymakers all night, but it was Haleigh Taylor who delivered the knockout blows. The slugger racked up six RBIs on three hits, including a solo shot and two doubles, to lead the Eagles to a 13-12 comeback win on Monday.

Ursuline came out swinging, jumping to an early 2-1 lead and then blowing it open in the third and fourth innings. They dropped seven runs in the fourth alone, capitalizing on a Hubbard miscue and stringing together five hits—including doubles from Lila Jones and Brooke Opalick—to build a 12-5 cushion.

But the Eagles didn’t back down.

Taylor got Hubbard on the board with a solo blast in the first, then cleared the bases with a three-run double in the fourth. She followed that up with a two-run double in the fifth to keep the pressure on.

The game flipped for good in the bottom of the sixth. Lylah Taylor roped an RBI double to center, Lauren Komorek slapped one down the line to bring in another, and Layla Songer smashed a triple to right to give Hubbard its first lead since the opening inning.

Kaylee Schultz locked up the win in relief, throwing four innings and giving up just two runs on four hits while striking out four. Taylor started in the circle and battled through three innings, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on nine hits.

Hubbard put up 12 hits as a squad. Songer and Taylor both had multi-hit nights, and the lineup showed discipline at the plate, drawing eight walks. Komorek and Songer each walked twice and snagged a couple bags. Hubbard finished with four steals.

Ursuline outhit Hubbard with 13 knocks. Katie Koulianos led the way with three RBIs, while Brooke Opalick, Brooke Burton, Emma Davies,  Koulianos, and Eva Camuso each had two hits. Ireland O’Hara took the loss in relief, giving up three runs in just under two innings. Lauren O’Leary also drove in a run during that wild fourth inning.

These two squads showed plenty of fight, but it’s the Eagles who walked off with the dub. They’ll be back on the field Wednesday at home against Lakeview. Ursuline will stay on the road on Wednesday heading to Warren Harding.

ROBY WALKS IT OFF FOR FITCH

By Ty Bartell

Austintown, OH — The Austintown-Fitch Falcons remained unbeaten on the season with a commanding 12-2 win over the Ursuline Fighting Irish in six innings on Tuesday evening, capped by a walk-off two-run home run by Morgan Roby to invoke the run rule.

Fitch (6-0) struck early and often, plating one run in the first before breaking things open with a five-run second inning. Roby drove in four runs on the night, including her sixth-inning homer, while Kaliana Ray and Alyssa Rodgers each collected two hits, including a double, and combined for four RBI and four stolen bases.

The Falcons added another run in the third before Ursuline (1-5) briefly cut into the lead with two runs in the fourth, highlighted by a double from Brooke Burton and an RBI sacrifice fly. Fitch held steady, however, and put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Tori Greathouse went the distance in the circle for Fitch, allowing just three hits and two earned runs while striking out three over six innings to earn the win. Ursuline’s Emma Davis was charged with the loss, surrendering nine hits and seven runs all unearned in the contest.

Austintown-Fitch will look to continue its strong start on Saturday, April 5th against The Jefferson Area Falcons while Ursuline aims to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming matchup against The Hubbard Eagles on Monday, April 7th.
