LAMPARTY POSTS CAREER HIGH, RANGE SAILS PAST SHAW

HOWLAND, OH- The South Range Girls Basketball team opened up the season with some unfamiliarity Friday night at Howland vs Cleveland Shaw as part of the Toni Ross Tournament.

2 new additions to the starting lineup walked on the floor, one a senior Marlaina Slabach and one a freshman Lexi Giles. On top of new faces head coach Tony Matisi was unable to be on the sidelines serving a 2 game suspension for his ejection out of the 2018 regional semifinal last season. Through the adversity, the Lady Raiders stood tall and earned a trip to the tournament championship with a 62-46 win over Cleveland Shaw.

In the 1st quarter, the Raiders scored right out of the gate as Marlaina Slabach buried a three in their offensive possession. The rest of the quarter, however, was lethargic for the Raiders offense. Not for a lack of execution the Raiders got to the free throw line 11 times in the frame but only put in 3 shots. They trailed after 1 9-8.

In the 2nd quarter, Izzy Lamparty took control. Scoring 8 points in a row and opening the Raiders offensive attack. Lamparty’s ability to score inside made room for Bri Modic and Marlaina Slabach to put in a couple of threes. The Raiders outscored the Cardinals 21-7 in the frame to take a 29-16 lead into halftime.

The Raiders kept rolling in the 3rd quarter as Bree Kohler turned quick hands on defense into easy buckets on offense. The Cardinals stayed in the game with some exceptional perimeter shooting from their guards but the Raiders were able to maintain a 46-36 lead after 3.

The perimeter shooting that kept the Cardinals close in the 3rd was non-existent in the final frame. The Raider offense kept on the attack and pulled away with a 62-46 victory.

Izzy Lamparty who missed all of the volleyball season with an injury came back on the court with a vengeance. She dropped a career-high 30 points and also snagged 14 rebounds and 5 steals.  Bree Kohler also had a strong outing scoring 17 points 4 rebound and 4 steals. The Lady Raiders will play Howland Saturday night at 7:30 for the tournament championship.

LADY RAIDERS BUMPED IN HOME OPENER BY URSULINE

CANFIELD, OH- The Raider Volleyball team welcomed in the Ursuline Irish in their home opener Monday night. The Raiders dropped a tough 5 set match (25-20 20-25 17-25 25-18 11-15)

In set 1 the Raiders hit the ground running. Izzy Lamparty collected 3 blocks in the set to establish a strong Raider defense. Junior Anna Primavera notched 3 service aces in a row to give the Raiders a strong lead that they would ride to a 25-20 set 1 victory.

In set 2 the Irish rebounded with a strong defense that held the Raider hitters to only 5 kills. The Raiders helped out with 6 attack errors as well. Izzy Lamparty tallied 2 more blocks but the Raiders dropped the set 20-25.

After the first couple points in set 3, Izzy Lamparty went down and had to leave the game. The Raiders struggled to find a rhythm in a new rotation as they committed 8 attack errors. The Raiders dropped set 3 17-25

With their backs against the wall, the Raiders were up for the challenge in set 4. The Raiders were able to gather 9 kills in the set 3 from Primavera. The Raiders got back to work on their net defense as sophomore Abby George stepped up with 3 blocks that slowed down the Irish momentum. The Irish fought off 4 set points but the Raiders took the set 25-18.

In the decisive 5th set the Raiders and Irish traded points to get to 7-7. Back to back attack errors from the Raiders have the Irish some breathing room and they were able to wiggle away with a 15-11 match-clinching set 5 victory.

As a team, the Raiders were held to a hitting percentage under .100 mostly attributed to strong back row defense from the Irish. As a team, the Raiders finished with 13 service aces. Anna Primavera lead the Raiders with 10 kills and also tallied 7 service aces. The newcomer to the varsity lineup Abby George finished with 7 kills 3 blocks and a dig. Mary Kuhns finished with 15 digs. Drew Ferren led the Raiders in assists with 15. The Raiders return to action Tuesday traveling to Fitch.
