POLAND DEFENSE SILENCES STRUTHERS

Defense was the story of the night for Poland. They got their first NE8 win Thursday night over Struthers 50-40.

Poland still is trying to find a solid rhythm in their young season. Lucky for them they have a suffocating defense to hold teams down while they find it. In the first three-quarters of the game, the highest-scoring frame for Struthers was 10. And in the first and third quarters they were held to 2, and 3 respectfully.

On the offensive side of the Ball, the Bulldogs got started quickly with 8 fast points. But then they stalled for a bit as the first quarter bled into the second. Poland’s perimeter game was not as on as it was earlier in the week vs Champion. Poland went 2/11 from three point land on the night. That didn’t stop sophomore Morgan Kluchar from having a great night on the glass. She led the team in rebounds with 10. Helping Poland limit Struthers to one opportunity, and giving them some extra opportunities on the other side. Poland rebounded well as a team totaling in 26, with 4 players having at least 5. The Poland lead was 40-15 in the 4th quarter before a majority of the varsity starters subbed out. Struthers made a fierce rally to close the gap, but Poland still came away with the 50-40 win.

Jackie Grisdale led the Bulldog charge with 14 points. Kailyn Brown had a strong night with 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Emma Elia finished with a game high 19 for Struthers.

Poland returns to action Monday as they host South Range.

POLAND ESCAPES THRILLER IN CHAMPION

The start of the new season for the Poland Lady Bulldogs looks very similar to the start last season when they won by two at Salem. This time around they escaped Champion with a 52-49 win.

The Bulldogs had to deal with a very slow offensive start. Plagued by turnovers Poland couldn’t find a rhythm in the beginning stages of the game. However Jackie Grisdale and Brooke Bobbey both covered up the miscues with three pointers. Poland’s shut down defense didn’t miss a beat, holding down Champion while their offense worked things out. Poland trailed 12-10 after one quarter.

Poland opened the second quarter with a 9-0 rally and it looked like they were going to run away with the game. The Flashes fought back though, answering with a 6-2 run as the half dwindled down. Bobbey hit her second three of the game before the halftime buzzer to give the Bulldogs some breathing room heading into the locker room with a 24-18 lead.

Champion outscored the Bulldogs 16-10 in the third quarter helped out tremendously by the work of Emma Gumont down low. After three the game was tied 34-34 and it promised to be an exciting finish.

After the teams traded points back and forth for the first couple minutes of the fourth, the perimeter game came in to effect for Poland. Grisdale and Bobbey both hit threes late to give Poland breathing room. With a 46-40 lead the Bulldogs found themselves in a position to win the game at the foul line. They struggled though to knock down free throws down the stretch which gave Champion the opportunity to inch closer and closer. The Bulldogs went to the line leading by 2 with about 10 seconds left. They hit one out of two to make it 52-49, but it also gave Champion a last shot opportunity. Grisdale stole the ball away to deny them that chance and Poland escaped with a 52-49 win.

Jackie Grisdale led the way with a strong 26 point performance going 4/8 from three. Brooke Bobbey also finished in double figures with 12.

Poland stays on the road traveling to Struthers on Thursday night.

PERIMETER PLAY POWERS POLAND PAST CRESTWOOD

POLAND, OH- The Poland Lady Bulldogs advanced to the district semifinals Thursday night with a 73-20 win over Crestwood.

Jackie Grisdale got the offense rolling early scoring 10 points in 2 minutes of play. It helped Poland roll out to an 11-0 lead. Crestwood, however, would grab momentum in the first frame going on a 7-0 run to cut the Poland lead to 11-7. The 7 points were scored by a 4 point play and an old fashioned 3 point play. That little glimpse of momentum, however, would be the last Crestwood would get, as the Bulldogs answered with a 13-0 run and lead 24-7 after 1.

The perimeter shooting of the Bulldogs really helped keep their big lead. Six different players hit at least a three for Poland. The defense also kept Crestwood’s shooters in check allowing just 2 points in the first 7 minutes of the 2nd quarter. Crestwood would go on a 6-0 run to close the half but Poland still ballooned their lead to 45-15 at the break.

The Bulldogs defense didn’t let up one bit in the 2nd half as every rotation that coach Blanch put in was making it hard for Crestwood. The Devils would only score 5 points in the final two frames. Poland went on to win 73-20.

Jackie Grisdale led the Bulldogs with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Kailyn Brown was also in double figures with 11 points, she tallied 8 rebounds. Poland moves on to play West Branch in the district semifinals at Fitch High School Monday at 6:00.

THE GRIZZLED PATH

It’s hard to believe that someone so calm under pressure, and such a vital part of a team is only in her second year.  However, for Poland Sophomore, Jackie Grisdale- it’s just another day at the office.

Grisdale is wise beyond her years, and that’s a big reason that she and her Lady Bulldog teammates have seen so much success in the 2018-2019 Campaign.  That, and the fact that the selflessness and genuine love that these young ladies show for the game and for each other shines through in each passing second on the game clock.

A young lady who is not afraid to pass the basketball, and the spotlight.  Jackie is learning from her freshman season, and with the help of her teammates and coaches- growing leaps and bounds!

So- What is the biggest difference between this year and last?  What’s it like to be a coach’s daughter?  How have her senior teammates impacted her on and off the floor?  Our Anthony Hartwig sits down with Jackie Grisdale for this week’s Poland Basketball Player Profile: THE GRIZZLED PATH.
