RAIDERS OVERTIME WIN CREATES THREE WAY TIE FOR A NE8 TITLE

JEFFERSON OH- There aren’t too many times when you’ll see a three way tie for a conference championship.  However, with how crazy the NE8 was this season, no one is shocked that there was a serious chance of that happening.  South Range met Jefferson on Tuesday in the final NE8 conference game of the season.  The Falcons were seeking an outright league championship, and the Raiders were trying to cause a three way tie at the top.  Just like you’d expect out of a top tier matchup, this game went back and forth all night. After Jefferson jumped out to a 24-14 lead after one quarter, the Raiders evened the score by winning the next three frames.  Tied at 40 at the end of regulation the two teams needed one extra stanza to decide a winner.  It came close to needing another too. Enter Luke Rohan.  The Raiders biggest perimeter threat showed up in the biggest moment with a game winning three that gave South Range a 48-45 win.

Landon Moore earned the team lead with his big 21 point performance.  Rohan’s three gave him 10 points on the night to break in to double figures.  Ayden Leon was able to add 9 points to the Raiders cause.

Joe DeGeorge led the way for Jefferson as he was able to knock down 17 points.  Anthony Covetta was also in double figures for the Falcons as he grabbed 12 points.  Luis Padilla also scored 12 as well for Jefferson.

RAIDERS FIND THEMSELVES IN ANOTHER DRAMATIC FINISH

CANFIELD OH- At this point, it seems like all South Range does is play in games that require dramatic finishes.  After coming off a win on the road against Girard with a buzzer beater by Ayden Leon, the Raiders now eyed Jefferson.  Because of that Raider victory over Girard Jefferson is now tied for first place in the NE8.  South Range came in just one game back from both teams.  The closeness of the teams in the standings formulated the kind of game you would expect. A close back and forth tug of war. The only question was who would have the final pull?

Jefferson led early, South Range led for a big chunk of the middle portion, and then Jefferson took a lead late. It was at that moment the Raiders made that final pull.  With the game tied with just under a minute to go, it was free throws making the difference. Dylan Turvey knocked down a pair on an intentional foul call, and then Leon knocked down two in the next possession.  With it now 63-59 the Falcons would score quick from three to cut it back to 1, and send Landon Moore to the free throw line with about 5 seconds left.  Moore would miss the shot, but his teammate Leon was there to clean it up, his offensive rebounded wasted the rest of the clock and gave the Raiders another thrilling win 63-62.

For the Raiders it was Moore that led the way. He put in 23 points on the night.  Leon was also clutch, especially down the stretch and finished with 15 points.  Luke Rohan was the Raiders biggest perimeter threat and finished with 14.

Anthony Cavetta and Joe DeGeorge both led the way for Jefferson with 22 points each.  Grant Hitchcock rounded out the rest of the Falcons scoring with 18.

South Range has a tough non league matchup on Saturday as they travel to Chaney.  Jefferson can bring themselves back to first place on Tuesday as they host Girard.

POLAND GRINDS IT OUT IN JEFFERSON

JEFFERSON OH- Poland has a tendency to get in to defensive battles with the style of basketball they play. That was never as true as it was on Thursday as they traveled up to Jefferson. The Bulldogs needed every bit of that branded defense as the Falcons held them to 2 points in the fourth quarter. There was no comeback to be had though as the Bulldogs held Jefferson to 0 fourth quarter points.  That let Poland get out of Jefferson with a 39-27 win.

Ava Nicholudis and Mary Brant both led the way for Poland scoring 11 points each.  Katie McDonald wasn’t too far behind as she chipped in 9 points.
Darbie Skytta and Tatum Bordeaux both led Jefferson with 7 points a piece.

Poland now looks ahead to a huge matchup on the road in Struthers as they try to protect first place in the Fieldhouse.  Jefferson will get right at it on Monday as they host Girard.

RAIDERS SHAKE OFF THE RUST

CANFIELD OH- The Raiders hadn’t played in seven days coming in to Thursday’s conference matchup with Jefferson. The rust of a week off definitely  showed early. That was something Jefferson tried hard to take advantage of. They led a lot of the first quarter, and a good chunk of the second.  Tatum Bordeaux hit a three in the second quarter to put Jefferson ahead 10-7.  That is when the Raiders woke up.  They ended the first half on a 7-0 run, and extended it to a  26-3 run by the end of the third.  It was all South Range from that point as they won 41-21.

Emma Cunningham continues to play well at home as she led the Raiders with 17 points. Sidney Penick was also in double figures with 11 points for the Raiders.  Taylor McClish put in a solid night for South Range finishing with 7.

Jefferson was led by Bordeaux who finished with 8 points.  Mia Contenza added 5 points for the Falcons.

South Range looks ahead to a non conference matchup with an old rival.  They’ll travel to Springfield on Saturday for a 12:30 tip-off.  Jefferson continues NE8 play on Monday as they travel to Niles.

POLAND’S DEPTH COMES THROUGH

POLAND OH- Like many teams across the state of Ohio, Poland is currently dealing with low numbers due to illness.  That didn’t stop them from strapping up and welcoming in conference rival Jefferson Monday night.  The Falcons came in with a fighter’s mentality and never backed down from the Bulldogs. However, the Bulldogs used their bench depth to overwhelm Jefferson and stay undefeated in the NE8 with a 55-37 win.

Mary Brant led the Bulldogs with a big second half to finish the night with 15 points. Kylee Hudran came off the bench and hit four threes to finish in double figures with 12.  8 other Bulldogs put themself in the stat book.  Ariana Daniels, and Sarah Forsyth both finished with 6 points. Leanne Williams had her first career varsity start and contributed plenty of rebounds in the paint, and 3 points.

Jefferson also had several players contribute to their scoring in the losing effort. They were led by Mia Contenza who got into double figures with 10.  Tatum Bordeaux, Darbie Skytta, and Riley Franklin all finished with 6 for the Falcons.

Poland’s win sets up a first place battle with Struthers on Thursday. Jefferson will stay on the road as they travel to Girard on Thursday.
