MOGADORE FIGHTS BACK TO SPLIT WITH JFK

NILES, OH- In a tightly contested game that went the distance, Mogadore eked out a 5-3 victory over the Warren JFK Eagles on Tuesday. The game, held at Eastwood Field, showcased resilience and clutch performances, particularly from Mogadore’s pitcher Ronnie Skye, who also shined at the plate.

The scoring opened with Mogadore taking a modest lead in the first inning, but it was the third inning when JFK responded, taking advantage of a couple of hits to put up two runs. The game saw several shifts in momentum, with Mogadore clawing back with runs in the sixth and seventh, and finally sealing their victory with two crucial runs in the ninth.

Ronnie Skye was undoubtedly the star for Mogadore, not just pitching a complete game but also scoring three of his team’s five runs. His performance on the mound was gritty, navigating through nine innings on a heavy pitch count of 125 pitches. Despite the pressure, he managed to keep his composure, allowing three runs and striking out two, walking three.

JFK had its moments too. Chase Hadley delivered with two hits and two RBIs, including a double. Dominic Ryan added a triple to his tally, driving in a run. The team matched Mogadore in hits but just couldn’t convert enough of these opportunities into runs, leaving ten runners stranded on base.

Mogadore’s ability to capitalize on their chances, despite having fewer opportunities (stranding twelve), was key. Jake Hopkins came through with three hits and two RBIs, adding essential runs for Mogadore in those tight moments.

This game was a tough pill to swallow for Kennedy, especially considering they were at home and had multiple chances to seize control. The pitching for JFK saw Jaden Rishel starting strongly, but as the game wore on, Mogadore’s hitters adjusted and found ways to score. Michael Bartoe and Andrew Lapolla tried to hold the line, but the small gaps in defense and a couple of wild pitches contributed to their challenges.

Mogadore walks away with the win, but both teams displayed plenty of heart and hustle. JFK will look to bounce back in their next game which is scheduled Thursday away against Boardman.

CANFIELD KICKS EAGLES OUT OF THEIR NEST

CANFIELD OH- In a highly anticipated showdown on their home court, Canfield faced the formidable challenge of Warren JFK on Tuesday night. The Cardinals rose to the occasion, flexing their muscles to secure a decisive 65-53 victory and maintain control throughout the contest.

Leading the charge for Canfield was Dom Cruz, whose remarkable performance yielded an impressive 29 points. Ben Weaver contributed 13 points, while Sam Castronova added 10 points, and Tony Russo chipped in with 9 points. The Cardinals’ well-rounded offensive effort proved pivotal in keeping Warren JFK at bay.

Despite the efforts of Warren JFK, led by Nick Ryan’s standout 23-point performance, and contributions from Jaden Rishel and Nico Ciminero with 10 points each, Canfield’s resilience and skill on the court proved insurmountable.

With this crucial win, Canfield (12-4) is set to take their show on the road, facing Warren Harding on Friday. Meanwhile, Warren JFK (12-4) will regroup and return home to face Aquinas in their upcoming matchup on Friday.

WHO’S THE BOSS?

NILES, OH- Aidan Rossi needs a towel because he’s dripping with swagger.  From the moment his feet touch the floor, to the end of the day where his head finally meets the pillow- the guy is constantly watched.

Is it the shoes?  Is it the work ethic?  Is it his passion?  It could be all of that and then some.  Rossi his having the time of his life this year alongside his JFK teammates, and he’s not ready at all for the ride to come to a complete stop.  In fact, he’s willing his way toward the state semi-finals this weekend after an outstanding touchdown grab on fourth down with the game on the line.

A generational talent who’s a legacy kid at JFK, Rossi continues to paint the picture for underclassmen of exactly what it means to wear the “K” and the history that comes along for the ride when you do so.

We caught up “7” to touch base on what’s going on in his world, and plans for his future on this week’s Warren JFK: Who’s the Boss?

THE WOLF IS ON THE PROWL

WARREN, OH- What does high school football have to do with Wall Street?  Well, it’s hustle and bustle when the whistle blows, until the final bell sounds.  It takes teamwork to accomplish an upswing in the exchange.

In the trenches.

THAT’S where the winners live.

On Warren JFK- they have Will Toth, a senior who has battled his way over, under, and through adversity during his tenure with the Eagles.  However, on the other side of that adversity- a grizzled wolf has been created.  One that has ambition, hunger, and determination in those trenches to help battle through opponents’ lines and eat up blocks like a medium-rare steak.

Toth reveals in his Profile that he wants to take the JFK stock to the top in his final year as an Eagle, then eventually find his way to Wall Street and showcase his talents there as well.

We catch up with Will the Wolf who talks about his past, present, and future as well as his role model parents in this edition of the Warren JFK Player Profile: The Wolf is on the Prowl.

LIKE THERE’S NO TO-MAURO

WARREN, OH- They call this “second season” at JFK.  It’s the playoffs, and for this flock of Eagles, it means business trips every Saturday with every week being a new opportunity to put their signature on history.

2016 marks the last time that Warren John F. Kennedy won a state title in football.  An accomplishment that escaped them by only a single game last season, and now the Birds of Prey are circling back around this season- and we might add that they’re looking (somehow) stronger than they were last season.

Is it the offseason program?

Is it a chip on their shoulder?

Could it be the confidence of a state baseball championship?

We sat down with one of the undeniable leaders of this years team, Michael Mauro, as he explains the differences between one year and the next.  The “Ice Man” also discusses what drives this particular team each week, and uncovers a bit about what it’s like to play like it’s his last down each time they take the field.

We also talk to him about his sister Izzy’s success on the volleyball court, and does Michael heat up the kitchen as a special talent?

SHRUMBODY SPECIAL

WARREN, OH- “How cool is it that Warren JFK got to the state title game in baseball too?”

That was the question floating around the greater Youngstown area on Saturday night.  However, for at least one young man, getting to the game just wasn’t enough.

For Junior, Gavin Shrum, he needed more.  For his teammates, for his school, for his family, and for himself.  Just months after falling in the state championship contest in football, Shrum had promised himself that if he ever had another chance at the “gold trophy” he wouldn’t let the opportunity slip away if he had anything to do with it.  So in a bit warmer climate of sunny Akron, Ohio, the young pitcher would be handed the ball for a chance to etch his, and his teammates’ names in the record books at John F. Kennedy Catholic School forever.

Many looked at the situation and said “it was a great run” and “who would have thought 11 boys could make it this far?”

Shrum saw a chance to avenge a loss that still haunted him.  He saw a chance to prove that a team needs 9 to play in baseball, and the grit, skill, and determination would handle the rest.

Simply put, Shrum saw his moment- and he owned it.

We caught up with the state champ to discuss what things were like leading up to the game, as well as the moments after, and MUCH more.  Enjoy this week’s Warren JFK Player Profile: Shrumbody Special.

RISHEL SHINES IN PITCHERS DUEL WITH CRESTVIEW

NEW WATERFORD, OH- Jaden Rishel looked like a pitcher that was well above his years on Saturday afternoon.  The Freshmen tossed 6 and 2/3 innings of shutout baseball before Cam Hollobaugh came in for the one pitch save, as JFK defeated the Crestview Rebels 2-0.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Rishel struck out eight, while Campbell sat down two.

Sam Campbell took the loss for Crestview. The bulldog surrendered two runs on four hits over seven innings, striking out two.

Offensively, Alex DeSalvo went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead JFK in hits. The Eagles were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Caleb Hadley had the most chances in the field with ten, and impressed behind the dish with his efforts.

Campbell led Crestview with two hits in four at-bats.

EAGLE DEFENSE STOUT, HOLLOBAUGH SLASHES AQUINAS

WARREN, OH- Pittsburgh Steeler of yesteryear, Kordell Stewart made the nickname “Slash” ever popular in the late 90’s because he played so many positions on the field.  Fast forward over 2 decades and Warren JFK is witnessing it’s a new brand of “Slash” in the form of senior, Cam Hollobaugh.  St. Thomas Aquinas found that out first-hand on Kennedy’s way to a 37-7 victory.

The game started out as a chess match, with Kennedy taking the lead after a long drive stalled out in the red zone, and JFK would settle for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead from Sarosh Sheth.  However, on the ensuing kickoff, D’Andre Black housed a 70-yard return to give the Knights the lead.

From that moment on, the Eagles were awoken.

Led by the defensive line and outstanding linebacker play from Eddie Kiernan and his crew, Kennedy shut down the Knights the rest of the way- and even scored on a fumble caused in the endzone recovered by Ambrose Hoso just a few minutes into the second quarter.

Offensively, Jesse Likens toted the rock 13 times for 40 yards and a TD, while Cam Hollobaugh did a little bit of everything.  “Slash” had 47 yards passing on 8 of 9 completions, 13 carries for 86 yards, and also had 3 catches for 83 yards- add in a combined pair of touchdowns and he would be elected the Joe Dickey Electric Player of the game.

JFK (2-0) will now turn their attention to Conneaut (1-1) at home this Friday.
